Hunter attacked by bear in Gunma

A hunter was attacked by a bear on a mountain in Numata City, Gunma Prefecture, but managed to scare it off by firing two shots.

According to police, the 39-year-old hunter, who is from Tokyo, was hunting deer at about 2 p.m. Monday when a 1.5-meter-long bear suddenly attacked him, TV Asahi reported. The man said he fired a shot but missed the bear which bit him on the left hand. He fired a second shot into the air and the bear went back into the woods.

Police warned residents to be careful and alerted local hunters Tuesday to be on the lookout for the bear.

Better to warn the deer and bears to be careful and on the lookout for trigger-happy hunters.

it is a total shame that bears run wild in the wilderness! :p

Yogi was watching out for Bambi!!!

Aha! Retribution! The hunter becomes the hunted!

The bear should wait til the hunter shot a deer then go take it. But really, the problem isn't too many bears. It's too few wolves. With a healthy wolf population culling the deer population wouldn't be necessary.

Poor bear! He must have mistaken the hunter for a funny looking deer??

Poetic justice. It's strange that I feel this way, but a part of me is always just a little satisfied to see Nature getting her own back.

a 1.5-long bear

Never heard of that kind of bear. The hunter now sure has though.

a 1.5-meter-long bear

Is that a baby bear? The guy was lucky - what if it'd been full-grown?

Serves him right.

If someone tried shooting me I'd bite them.

Stranger,

There is too few wolves, there are NONE, thats the problem, Japan killed them all off ages ago, along with the river otter...............

So he wanted to shoot deer, but wasn't able to nail down an even bigger target just because it was moving? Guess he usually trains at home with a Wii-machine. Or it must have been a 山伏 camouflaged as a bear, that would be a sufficient reason.

Might want to practice his aim for next time. How you miss a bear when its close enough to get attacked is beyond me

The hunter got hunted...

The bear doesn't like hunters and guns. That's why he bite him in the hand.

Respect the bear's domain.

How can you hunt on a full stomach (of ramein) ? Does he really need to kill a deer ?

Is he that HUNGRY ? I don't think so.

Looks like karma came knocking on his door. He's lucky the bear wasn't hungry.

As they say in India, "Karma is a BEEYAITCH!" (OK, maybe they don't say it EXACTLY like that...)

GW, yes, I know. That was my point.

The deer do need to be culled, but the sad thing is since game meat is 'kusai' to most Japanese, most of the venison is just thrown away, or so I've read.

What if starting tomorrow... bears go hunting to cities..?

After living in America I support the right to keep and arm bears!

I wonder if the guy would have missed the deer he was hunting too? I blame a lack of target practice....

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

I side with and speak for the bear, this guy was trespassing on his territory and was a menace. If that guy comes around my home with a gun I will bite him too.

YuriOtani - Good one.

I suppose no one's heard of hikers getting attacked by bears, either? Do hikers deserve being attacked by bears or boar? City folk…

man bites dog. Hikers don't get attacked because they wear bells.

Turnabout's 'bear' play.
