Interviews held to hire staff for Tokyo Sky Tree, Soramachi

Interviews were held in Tokyo on Saturday for some 7,000 job openings at Tokyo Sky Tree and businesses in the surrounding Tokyo Soramachi area.

Tokyo Sky Tree officially opens on May 22. However, a shopping and restaurant area directly beneath Tokyo Sky Tree has already opened to the public. Sky Tree Town features an open air market lined with cherry blossom and red pine trees.

The Tokyo Soramachi section is reminiscent of Tokyo’s Shitamachi area – home to historic Asakusa – and houses 300 tenants ranging from fashion shops to bars and restaurants.

The rest of the Sky Tree Town will include office buildings and an aquarium.

Thirty-six companies will open stores at Tokyo Soramachi and are recruiting full-time and part-time workers. The operator of Tokyo Sky Tree is hiring staff for the information center and observation platform.

Probably the first question asked during the interviews was: "Are you scared of heights?"

Give the wrong answer and you may as well start looking for another job ...

It sounds like most of the available jobs will be on the ground, edojin.

It was clear from the beginning that Tokyo Sky Tree would generate some jobs. I'll be interested to see if it costs any jobs at Tokyo Tower.

Sky Tree? Sounds like another precarious structure in a delicate land!

Chazed: Sounds like another precarious structure in a delicate land!

Don't teach the Japanese how to build stuff... Compared with other countries building codes for big buildings, Japan is like a different planet. The M 9.0 last year did little in terms of structural damage in Sendai (and close to nothing in Tokyo)... IIt would have leveled any city outside Japan...
