How about not spending millions of yen to paint Disney and other characters on planes and instead make flights cheaper.

How much are JAL being paid to advertise Disney.

That was my first thought too. Characters on board would trigger more air rage than booze.

Well, my first thought went south. Sexy Minnie Mouse outfits.

They are still chasing ANA, which years ago began featuring Pokemon characters and became a big hit with families.

How Much is J.A.L.-being PAID to advertise DISNEY? And yes WHY NOT REDUCE Fares instead of SPENDING So Much on Paint + All other Costs?

Well, that confirms what I've been saying all along... JAL is truely a Mickey Mouse operation.

EVA Airways of Taiwan has had a numbe of Hello Kitty airplanes and special service since 2005. ANA have had Star Wars themed airplanes since 2015. Now JAL copies them.

I wonder though, did Oriental Land pay JAL to use the Disney images on their planes, or did JAL pay Oriental Land for the right to use the images? Neither are particularly strong financially.

JAL have had Disney themed aeroplanes for years.

They flew a B747-100 in the 90's adorned with characters.

So, it's nothing really new except the artwork.

They should’ve used Japanese anime characters......... whatever happened to that “Cool Japan “ movement??

They're (ostensibly) commemorating the Disney Resort, but ALL they're looking out for is their bottom line. It's a very simple marketing tactic. You can see it in full display at your local supermarkets. Popular cartoon/anime characters help sell products to a certain demographic. Been proven statistically. Period.

I fly a lot for work, often to Okinawa. There's always a few ANA or JAL Trans Ocean Air planes there in "special colours" (the yellow ANA Star Wars 777 and the pink and blue whale shark 737 designs spring to mind). Personally I think they're a bit of a gimmick, nothing to give a hoot about, but it always surprises me how often I hear Japanese passengers sitting around me (and also looking out the window at those planes) say things like "Oh I really want to fly on that one!!". As if you can tell what the paint looks like on the outside when you're IN it!? I guess like all things cute and dorky, it works here! 10 years and counting, but it's one element of Japanese culture I'll never understand or learn to enjoy.

Why don't they just paint the thing to look like a giant hot-dog ?

Kadokawa and Asahi would probably be cheaper for painting anime.

Now if the inside of the plane looked Disney (food court, roller coasters, tea cup rides), that would be worth riding.

To all the folks complaining that they should have saved the money and instead lowered fares, you fail to realize that companies have a marketing budget, and a large company like JAL is going to have a very large marketing budget. That money is going to be spent one way or another on marketing. Not painting Mickey Mouse on an airplane is not going to do anything at all to the price of your plane ticket.

A lot of people actually want to be able to say 'I flew on the fill-in-the-blank themed airplane' and this brings in business. If you don't care, then it obviously wasn't meant for you. Personally, I know that if I showed my 3 year old niece, who loves Star Wars, pictures of an ANA Star Wars plane and told her that I flew inside it, she would be ecstatic.

I checked the tail number and this 767-300 was until recently flying international routes. I suspect the aircraft needed to be repainted. It is now located at Fukuoka D terminal, having completed a flight from Haneda a 1 hr and 48 min flight.

Again the repainting was done out of need and JAL used Disney to generate income.
