Note the use of progressive tense and not the past participle tense. Increasing the quota should be done after they have recovered, not during the recovery.

It seems quite logical to conservatively increase catch quotas while the recovery continues, rather than wait for “recovered”, only to start fishing down again?

The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas decided at a recent online meeting to raise the overall catch limit for countries including Japan, deeming that total tuna stocks are recovering.

We cant let the stocks continue to recover so lets increase catch limits to get stock reducing instead.

God forbid stock should go from recovering to recovered.

Because they have the worlds largest Navy and will use it to keep fishing where ever they like for as much fish as they like. Stock limits are for others, not for China. China makes its own rules.

The aim should be to maintain existing quotas to allow stocks to recover to their original natural levels and only the allow quota levels that do not deplete the supply. It’s not rocket science, it’s what every farmer does with his heard animals. Then there would be a sustainable abundance.

China is vacuuming the oceans clean to sustain their gross overpopulation and keep the CCP in power. They don’t give a damn for anyone else and are quite willing to use bullying to get their way.

Tuna is healthy and good for you. We just need to find better ways to farm what we need instead of using the Ocean.

More foreign countries are becoming interested in Tuna as well, eating more fish then before. Japan is not the only one, the only country. Oceans are shared by the world. This is not a Japan only problem or caused only by Japan. We barely have 125 million people and declining birth rates fast, out of human population of over 7 Billion people. China consumes 15x more fish. To live like a USA citizen you would need 3x more planets. One of the most overweight countries on earth, over consumption to the max. Some perspective is necessary when judging Japan on here.

Last I heard Japan consumes 70% of the worlds bluefin tuna. Happy to see the fish stocks are recovering.

“Recovered” would imply no fishing at all… in which case, what is the point of conservation? Why do we want to conserve? Why, to utilize, that’s why.

A “recovered” stock of fish which yields nothing is pointless. A recovering fish stock can obviously by definition sustain higher catches.

Why not? If one hit the breaks on fishing, once the stock is “recovered”, then you accept fishing the stock down again in order to sustain a yield?

It makes no sense, unless the true objective is to end fishing, and I dunno, have people eat just worms and insects instead.

Nothing wasted. No deep-fried turkey was available for the holiday in Japan this year so, we enjoyed an oven-roasted, whole tuna head for “Thanksgiving”. It still offered a choice of ‘white’/‘dark’ meat and instead of fighting over the ‘wishbone’, we played “Rochambeau“ for the ‘eyes’. May be our ‘tradition’ from here onward.
