Those "warnings" like "please be careful as there're flying burning stones over there... Some caution must be exercised" and so on never resonate with my panicky soul. No "run for your life", nothing. Japan-unperturbed. Cool.

In the aftermath of the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in human history (Chile), there was not only an earthquake and tsunami, but the earthquake also triggered a volcano.

Awful news. Stay safe everyone.

When is Japan going to get some luck with mother nature? Just for a while would be good.

Stay home

This level of eruption is nothing to the locals. And Mt Aso near the crater was already closed to tourists.

Dormant for 19 years…that’s like a microsecond related to the planet’s timescale. It’s therefore a very active volcano, yes, one could say it’s in fact uninterrupted active. Take care, when near there… But it’s really a very nice area and worth a visit, so don’t miss it to enjoy and do not have too much more fears than everywhere else on the Pacific fire belt. Of course, not now…

Seems mother nature is suddenly awake from hibernation, trembling and spewing smokes from volcanoes everywhere. A propitious sign of a world-scale disaster?

They are reporting that there were 16 hikers on the mountain, but all are now accounted for!

There are more than 100 active volcanoes in Japan. That is one of them erupted today. Not big surprise.

Heck, I wonder if nature is not giving us all a sound kick up the backside.

Mount Aso does it often. It happened before a few years back in 2015 or 2016.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

I would not call it a disaster. No real damage, luckily. More of a natural event.

Mt. Fuji could go off sometime in our lifetime. That would be a bad one. Around every 500 years or so.

Aso is spewing again!

I was hiking on the top of that mountain with a buddy back in '05 or so, when it burped out a cloud of smoke. The ranger station below hollered on their loudspeakers for everyone to get back down the mountain and we scrambled our way back, never really in danger as it wasn't a significant eruption. As I recall, there are concrete bunkers built into the mountain up near the top that hikers can seek shelter in if need be.

The wakening of a sleeping giant! Nature just doing what it does naturally.

Mt Fuji is next.

Too much volcano! :D

I visited Aso back in 1964 and you could ride in a cable car over the caldera, that would be a particularly dangerous place to be during an eruption. I wonder if a similar conveyance is still in service?

This seems to be part of a pattern concerning the Pacific Ring Of Fire.

Volcanic & Earthquake patterns are quite disturbing.

I remember visiting Mt Aso in 2009 and seeing the ruins of the old cable car system, which had been destroyed by an eruption, which might have been that one.

Looking it up out of curiosity just now I discovered that the replacement cable car which I rode on that trip has also since been destroyed by an eruption.

Government might ask us to put on masks again!

Residents of Aso, Kumamoto: "Oh... it finally erupted. Enjoy the view, but let's get back to work."

This level of eruption is nothing to the locals.

While I partly agree, the eruption is not "nothing." It's the fallout from ash that causes a lot of difficulty to the locals in the area. Aso has a lot of agriculture, cows, fish farms. Aso also depends on tourism to sustain its economy. If non-locals worry about Mt. Aso, then they will likely stay away.

Fighto!: "When is Japan going to get some luck with mother nature? Just for a while would be good."

What are you talking about? You're alive, aren't you? In the single-most natural disaster prone nation in the world, we are quite lucky there has not been far worse lately. This isn't horrible, or tragic, or "unlucky", it's just nature. And if people choose to live, hike, travel around active volcanoes and a land where at any given moment you could have a quake that sinks it, it's not nature's fault, and it's not some attack on Japan we should all pity. No one was harmed here, which is lucky, and we have been reminded of the awesome forces of nature.

Mt. Fuji could go off sometime in our lifetime.

After seeing a documentary about Mt Hakone, I think I'd be even more worried that. But yes, keep a crash helmet and a proper mask and goggles handy, just in case.

This is going to make for an interesting viewing of this week's airing of "Submersion of Japan" on TBS.

Is that The Sinking of Japan (2020) animation series @TomSan 2:01pm ?? - (The following comments are “Spoiler Free”.) - Watched it and it was surprisingly timely and engaging. It does touch on environmental issues, the failure of the government to act quickly & decisively, panic, hoarding, selfishness, misinformation from social media, xenophobia, misguided nationalism, … Amazing that is was run before, during and after both the pandemic and Tokyo’s Big Event this summer. - Worth the watch!

@snowymountainhell

Is that The Sinking of Japan (2020) animation series??

No, not the animation (which I enjoyed too). I'm talking about the TBS live-action adaptation that airs every Sunday at 9PM. I think the correct title is "Japan Sinks: People of Hope" or something like that. Episode 3 coming up this Sunday.
