Japan wonders why China has taken over as number 2 in the world and worry about attracting foreign tourists. How are the obvious and easiest solutions (such as this smoking issue) not being accomplished?

I guess there's a Tobacco lobbyist group involved within Japanese Politics, just as there is a Gun Lobbyist group in the US.

Japan is one of the last nation that protect the democratic right to smoke like Austria and part of Germany. The total ban is completely anti democratic. Non smokers have so many non smoking options to choose that I really don' t understand where the problem is. If you smoke in a place that allow smoking you are threatening nobody.

I guess there's a Tobacco lobbyist group involved within Japanese Politics except one big difference if that Tabacco lobbyist are 51% owned by the J gov.

The total ban is completely anti democratic. Non smokers have so many non smoking options to choose non smoking options mean totally smoke free establishments, Japans smoking rate is about 25% of the adult population, I doubt there is anywhere near 75% of establishments are smoke free or even 51% since the non-smoking population is clearly in the majority of about 3-1. Japans non smoking establishments dont clearly represent the the democratic rights of its people or the overall health of its population.
