Papagiulio: yes, minor eruptions. Inconvenient for laundry, but not evacuation material for the most part. Lest we forget the mountain tragedy three years back where they failed to warn people and the volcano erupted, killing many.

Slightly offtopic perhaps but I recently found out Volcano Sakurajima is actually in the middle of a bay very near to Kagoshima city and prone to erupt. And still people live there....

How spectacular! It must be very interesting to watch. However, I guess nobody is concerned there are two nuclear power plants within 100k of this volcano. "Shoganai ne?"

Yeah; it's a great town. Lovely part of Japan, would love to live in the region. Saigo country!

Shinmoe is the volcano that Blofeld’s lair was based on in, ‘You Only Live Twice’. They filmed the helicopter battle over Kirishima National Park. Gorgeous area, highly recommended.

One of my favorite Connery efforts. Despite the iffy attempts to make himself "Japanese".

there are 7 active volcanoes on that line. plus the reactors(109km by road 267) which are not safe in heavy ash. been to kagoshima many times only once had to evacuate from Sakurajima, had to run in heavy ash to the ferry.

luckily it wasn't Fuji-san!

Well, we are concerned the way we are concerned when there is a car accident on 42nd St. and we are driving on 40th St. In other words, the one nuclear plant (not 2) will barely be affected, if at all.
