The eternal question: Is gambling a tax on stupidity?

Do large casino resorts have a positive impact on the people among us?

Japan is currently desperate for growth and thinking by building casino gambling can help growth.

Yamaguchi-gumi country.

the Japanese dream to have the ultra wealthy Chinese to lose their money in Japan is a dream. With millions of pachinko and slot parlors already in the country the lower cost mass gaming is has been here and it’s part of the middle class games. Game Center’s etc are socially acceptable and there where I think I this will end. Going and spending thousands in a casino like in Singapore and Macau where there are no competitors makes sense to centralize the industry but it just won’t work here in my opinion.

Osaka will become the new Macau.

The saddest part about this and many casino's like it is that they are the breeding ground for illegal activities and crimes.

When Casino owners are marketing casinos as family entertainments and play grounds for all ages they are telling children and teens that it's okay to gamble when an adult.

From Prostitution, to Drugs, to gambling, to drunks kids will see it at full display anywhere they go around these facilities.

Many years ago there was 3 pachinko parlors on the very same street leading to an Elementary near my home, school kids liked the lights and displays so they did stop while on the way to take a look, this is how it works.

It is a disgrace.

I'm fairly indifferent when it comes to the morality of gambling but I do oppose the building of the casino and resort on the basis that the whole thing has been rife with corruption from top to bottom.

LDP member Tsukasa Akimoto getting sentenced for bribery charges surrounding the bidding process and then being caught bribing witnesses whilst on trial.

The pork barrel circus that is the Osaka expo being used to lay the infrastructure and groundwork for the casino on the island on the dime of Osaka residents. The cost of which ballooned by over 90% from original estimates to a figure of over 230 billion yen (Not including the cost of Japan's own pavillion) Osaka governor Hirofumi Yoshimura helpfully agreed that Osaka tax payers would pony up for the additional costs for an expo 7 out of 10 Osaka residents don't support.

Osaka tax payers are also required to pay 79 billion yen to aid in construction of the casino resort. Over 60% of Osaka residents oppose the construction of the casino.

Nothing was learned from the Olympic scandals and a seemingly passive Japanese population seem to be happy to keep re-lecting the same corrupt political figures who line their own pockets and the coffers of big business at the expense of the ever impoverished Japanese people.

Quite amazing that this report is written without once using the word "Chinese".

The whole project is aimed at wealthy Chinese gamblers. From the mainland but also Taiwan and Singapore. Competition for Macau.

At the end of the day, some will become addicted and, nobody will give two poops. You'll lose your home, maybe your family, but some become addicts. it's designed that way. Remember the HOUSE ALWAYS, ALWAYS,wins.

And that is why they were so desperate to have the Osaka World Expo. The casino will benefit from the tax-payer funded site development. Some of the casino infrastructure is already being built.

I'm in favor of IR, so I'd like to see it continue as is.

Abolish pachinko like in Korea. Pachinko should only be held in government-run IRs.

Also, they're not just targeting Chinese people, they're probably hoping to attract rich people from the Middle East and America as well.

Gambling addiction? lol

There's currently no social security. With private gambling (pachinko), you don't know how much someone is spending.

By abolishing that and having the government manage it, it could be managed based on the Resident Registration Card. People who spend too much could receive counseling.

It's much better for the government to collect it as taxes than for the yakuza to collect it. People who gamble will do it somewhere else if you leave them alone.

It seems to me that Osaka Expo 2025 is almost a big failure and also Osaka Casino 2030 is going to be a big failure. They are wasting a lot of taxpayers' money. Most people don't care about such things.

If Japan is going to do this. Let do it properly. First you need new by laws for rich foreigners, and a new 1500 unit correctional facility before you even start building the casino. By laws should be that rich foreigners can paid a minimum fine of 10 million USD or the standard 10 years in prison. Because as night follow day so will the crime.

No good will come of this.

gambling is taking over from shopping, as the purpose of life.... notice how many mega-sports-events are now heavily sponsored by gambling companies? huuuuuge money in it!

Great comments in general but you can’t hide from gambling and the best thing to do it control and tax it. I would require all gamblers to register, set daily limits which can be changed if you go thru an approval process to increase and global sports betting. Tax collected can be used for a free gambling addiction program and to pay back the Osaka locals who got stuck with the bill of Expo 2025.

Capuchin

That's where you're wrong. They DID learn from the Olympics and other boondoggles that the public is too docile to demand heads. This is why these trillions-of-yen-over-budget spectacles keep being hosted and built.

The eternal question: Is gambling a tax on stupidity?

This assumes gambling is a conscious decision by every gambler. Some are addicts. Others may not be addicted to gambling itself, but prone to self-destructive patterns of behaviour. Some will just be rich and bored. The more of them, the better.

The bayside development in Osaka nearly bankrupted the city. The casino is likely just more good money being thrown after massive malinvestments in that area, albeit this time with the possible PR victory of making it look like part of the development is actually finished.
