"...the municipal government, which had been looking for fresh ways to utilize the old samurai fortress..."

And here is the fresh way to use the fortress: SUCK THE TAXPAYERS DRY! [for restoration expenses]

What a nice photo!

Nice for a short period maybe, agreed, but I prefer old castles the way they actually are, and not bathed in artificial purple fog for a movie set.

Some natural caves in Japan are also spoilt this way with garish lighting and unnecessary music.

The mist adds mystery to the castle like in times of old.

"It's an attempt to upgrade the splendor of Kumamoto Castle. I hope many people will see it," said Yasuhiro Iwasa, a municipal government official.

Ahhh. Kumamoto castle. Anyone who has studied Japanese history needs no such attempt.

It is one of my favourite castles, and home to the Hosokawa clan; one of my favourites clans. Tadaoki Hosokawa is an interesting and important former resident;

A good Japanese friend of mine gifted me a lovely model of the castle one time he visited my house with his family. It is an important part of my collection.

Same sentiment as BB above. (I have a Hosokawa artefact originally from the Kumamoto Castle armory.)

Nice. I have an Edo period reproduction of the kasen-koshirae that Kumamotojo no Hosokawa Tadaoki made famous.

The following is a great read:

Very interesting. Thank you. (Markus himself is some kind of a genius scholar.)

It was shocking to see that full restoration of Kumamoto castle will take until 2052. In the meantime we can probably expect more earthquakes of varying magnitudes. Hope they build it solidly.
