May they have a happy and healthy life together.

Congratulations!

Hopefully she'll be able to have some semblance of a normal life after this and not have her name dragged through the media every day of her life from here on in.

Even though this news is so tiring, I really want to wish them all the best. I hope from now on they can go on and live their life happily and no need to worry about the media and gossip. Omedetou Gozaimasu!!

Father: Hope you know what you're doing.

Mother: Will you be alright?

Sister: Oneechan, sugoi.

Because some of us have lived here a long time and have an interest in the country where we live in and have watched these people grow up.

Also 63% of of the UK population support the monarchy in general - the Queens approval is MUCH higher, and only 20% support the country having an elected Head of State. I assume you are in the 20% Simian, which is fine.

I’m curious what level of interest an English readership might have in the Japanese royal family.

This news has been getting lots of attention in the foreign press.

The princess, holding a small bouquet of pale pink flowers, bid farewell to her family -- bowing to her parents and the press, and hugging her sister.

This hug between the sisters was probably the most meaningful and demonstrative expression of affection ever in public by an Imperial household member!

May God bless the happy couple!

Princess Mako had better things to do than be trapped playing some part in an ancient and outdated institution. Best to let it disappear. Nobody really cares about it anymore. Especially young people. Evidently, even young people in the Imperial family.

half of the domestic population could care less

they could care less, or couldn’t care less ?

"couldn't care less" is correct whilst "could care less" makes no sense and is an Americanism. I was surprised that the OP used that expression as he/she said their country has a royal family.

Steady stuff for the tabloids over the past few years.

I hope they lead long happy and healthly lives, and they get left alone to forge their own way in the world. The media have put them through enough, for things they have no control over.

Once was born into a royal family, and the other has a mother who (potentially) defaulted on some loans.

Good Luck to them both.

Congrats and welcome to the USA.

I still think she should have accepted the money and donated to a worthwhile charity cause .

2 ( +5 / -3 )

@P.smith, your right the headline should be ex princess or Mako san has got married

Women in the imperial family cannot ascend the Chrysanthemum Throne, and lose their royal status when they marry a commoner.

How many suitors that are not commoners are there in Japan? Or would she have to marry into royalty from other nations to retain her royal status?

"Certainly, it would have been better to have a festive atmosphere, instead of this difficult situation, which is rather sad and regrettable," Shigehiro Hashimoto, 54, told AFP.

Blame the parasitic media for that!!

I wish them to be happy together and away from all the attention!

Wishing them all happiness.

Getting away from Japan and the constant attention will be good for them.

And no place better than the melting pot of NY.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Congratulations Mr and Mrs Komuro. Good luck to your life in NYC.

Congrats!

Congrats now leave them the heck alone!

Congratulation to both, I wish her full recovery and a happy life abroad away from all this hate and sick minds.

I hope the couple finds their own American Dream and has frequent, incognito visits to Japan so they don't get so homesick.

Being married by 30, so very Japanese.

The politics of royalty mean nothing to me beings I'm an American and my attitude on it all is Sex Pistol-ish. Nonetheless I wish them both the best of luck, love and life. She didn't ask for all the quirks of royalty and besides, if she wants to marry a 'commoner' out of love, let her.

This isn't the first time in history. We all know of Harry and Meghan, and I remember when Mrs. Simpson died in 1986. As in Edward and Mrs. Simpson, a marriage that was much more scandalous. At least Mako has married a respectable man with some honor and cred. And I say good luck and all the best to both of them.

Now can we just leave them alone?

It is not clear if Mako will work once there, but she is well qualified, having studied art and cultural heritage at Tokyo's International Christian University. She also holds a Master's degree from Britain's University of Leicester.

Well qualified to do.....what?

At least she did the right thing and turned down the ridiculous handout of public, tax payers money.

A male member of the British royal family marries a woman who starred in a television series about, and as the love interest of, a guy who worked as a paralegal in New York even though he had not graduated from law school.

A female member of the Japanese royal family marries a man who works as a paralegal in New York even though he has not graduated from law school.

I feel like I suffering from Truman Show syndrome during a script writer strike.

How long does do they get to stay in the US? One year? Is he an F-1 visa holder?

zichi

Yes, it has been five years. Thank you for noticing. I have left off commenting here, as a general rule, but this piece of news, and the desire to comment on it brought me back.

The British royal family does not have a dominating household [agency] like the one in the Japanese imperial family.

I am not sure the fictional unqualified paralegal's love interest would agree.
