For a little bit of context here, which I think is needed.

Sapporo had an elongated Winter with snow storms deep into March.

Temperatures didn't raised as usual, which kept Sapporo with a good amount of snow in April, which is rare.

Yes! This past March was one of the coldest and snowiest I have experienced in 33 years in Hokkaido.

This was the coldest spring in Tokyo, so…

If only this was as hot as it got...

Yeah actually the surface air temperature anomalies relative to the March average for the period 1990-2020 in Sapporo were negative. But this was of course not reported by the media driven by an agenda of ideology and fear mongering that chose to only report with big drama and with pseudo experts the narrative they fit them.

Well, the town of Sanjo in Niigata was 32.5 today, which I think is more impressive. However, I wouldn’t expect that to get quite the same media attention.

Homes in Hokkaido have gotten away without airconditioning for a very long time. That has started changing over the last few years. Last summer there was a rush of people buying A/C units. But they had to wait in line to get someone to do the install.

It was beautiful today in Sapporo and to the west from there. Walked around all day in shorts and sandals.

This winter was short and definitely warmer, with less snow than previous years. Some holes opening within the snowpack in Annupuri / Yotei / Iwao area during the first week of March due to the snow melting on warmer days. Glide cracks could be seen at the top of Annupuri in January and one of them was at least 3 to 4 meter deep. Warmest day was on February 14th, with the temperature going up to 14°C at noon at 500m of altitude. To then dropping to-7 next day.

Definitely not a usual season.

Yeah, I was a bit overdressed for my morning walk to language school (I live in Chuo-ku, near Nishi-juhatchome-eki), to say nothing of the walk home around noon. But although the winter waws a mild one and I generally like the cold, it was a nice change.
