“According to control equipment on board, state borders were not violated. The long-haul aircraft were accompanied by Japanese Air Force fighter jets throughout their flight over neutral waters.”

News? yes, to keep SDF in the limelight !

Interesting timing. A Nyet on the intrusion. A bigger Nyet on the islands issue?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

So much for all that talk of friendship and goodwill when the Japan/Russia talks were announced.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Both the US and South Korea are conducting the annual Ulchi Freedom Guardian drills (Aug19-Aug30), the movement of Russian military aircraft is most likely associated with the drills.

GPS?

Apple maps?

What could be their motives? They couldn't possibly want to rape the resources, could they?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Such a waste of fuel.....

1 ( +1 / -0 )

What could be their motives? They couldn't possibly want to rape the resources, could they? Sure noriyosan....they are desperate because Russia is so resource poor. Besides Russia controls the Kurils anyway so they can do as they wish with the resources there.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

What did they launch the jets for anyway, shooting down a Russian bomber would be the worse idea for Japan...

0 ( +2 / -2 )

It would be worse if the Russian bomber turned east heading towards Fukuoka to make a Kamikaze run. It's always better to be careful then to be sorry.

I don't think the Russian military uses GPS since it is controlled by the US military and can be turned off with a flick of a switch.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Russians have better system than GPS - GLONASS http://electronicdesign.com/test-amp-measurement/real-world-drive-tests-declare-verdict-gpsglonass

Why would Russian bomber do a Kamikaze run... they are from anything desperate, I would argue they could do a Fukuoka flyover and Japan wouldnt do anything beyond following them with jets and complaining later... which again is very beneficial to the current leadership direction in JP

Ruskys??!!

noriyosan73 Rape resources? You mean the Kyrils which were taken fair and square during a war Japan started?

My advice to you, forget about it, you are never getting it back ... Russia coudnt care less, they already offered Japanese to develop there for a fee, which was denied.

It's not about why since Japan would know the reason until it's too late and Russia has no saying if Japan had shot it down if and when it had gone for a Kamikaze run since it is a clear violation of sovereignty.

SamuraiBlue it is almost cute... yea they do have the right, butthey will be fools to provoke russia in any way.

First deny, then ask for credible proof, then deny, deny deny!

Looks like Abe is being kept busy all over the place. He must be wondering what triggered the Russian incursions especially when they were supposed to be discussing islands with Russia. Well, he just received the answer he had been waiting for. No deal!

Alex EinzAug. 23, 2013 - 02:57PM JST noriyosan73 Rape resources? You mean the Kyrils which were taken fair and square during a war Japan started?

Fair and Square? Japan surrenders on Aug 15th and USSR invades the Southern Kuriles on Aug 18th? Japan was to lose territories it took by force, but the Southern Kuriles became Japanese by a TREATY WITH RUSSIA in 1855. And a "war that Japan started"? Japan and USSR has a non-aggression pact which USSR unilaterally broke by attacking Japan in the last days of the war. It is the USSR/Russia that "started" the war with Japan. Obviously for the purpose of stealing territory just like they were doing in Eastern Europe. If it's so "fair and square": why does the U.S. amd U.K. consider the Southern Kuriles to be Japanese territory under Russian occupation? Why did the European Parliament pass a resolution recommending that Russia return these islands to Japan? Sorry but this is blatant theft no matter whose side you're on.

Japan surrenders on Aug 15th and USSR invades the Southern Kuriles on Aug 18th?

Who cares about "Aug 15th" wheh the Imperial Kwantung Army, including Kuril garrison did not surrended by that day.

Japan and USSR has a non-aggression pact which USSR unilaterally broke by attacking Japan in the last days of the war. It is the USSR/Russia that "started" the war with Japan.

Right. because earlier Stalin promised that to Allies. To start a war with Japan within 90 days of capitulation of Nazis. According to agreement, Allies were awaiting for Soviet military offensive on Far East.

Obviously for the purpose of stealing territory just like they were doing in Eastern Europe.

Rubbish and cheap piece of anti Soviet propaganda. Soviets liberated a large part of Europe from Nazis. The fact that after that Soviets established their administration in some countries says about a right of a winner. What "stealing" in Eastern Europe you're talking about?

If it's so "fair and square": why does the U.S. amd U.K. consider the Southern Kuriles to be Japanese territory under Russian occupation? Why did the European Parliament pass a resolution recommending that Russia return these islands to Japan?

Hahahaha! Who are that bunch of hypocrites to determine or teach Russia what to do or what not to do in geopolitics? Besides, "the US &t he UK & Europarlament" often behave themselves like pure political prostitutes, quickly changing viewpoints due to certain circumstances.

Sorry but this is blatant theft no matter whose side you're on.

Isles of Kuril chain were seized by force in a battle. If you dislike it, that's just your personal problem. Further, in case if you are an "American" this issue of South Kurils is non of your business. Plain and simple.

Talking to Russians is not the same as talking to Chinese. Russians will not be intimidated by big daddy

No allied power advanced further to gain ground after Aug 15th. EXCEPT FOR USSR. Oh sorry I forgot, the Soviet Red Army wasn;t finished with their civilian raping spree yet.

So you admit that USSR unilaterally broke the Soviet-Japan Non Aggression pact and attacked Japan. Or are you going to tell me that Stalin told the Japanese that he was breaking it and going to attack? Therefore the conflict between USSR and Japan was STARTED by USSR.

Obviously for the purpose of stealing territory just like they were doing in Eastern Europe.

What stealing? You are in denial about Soviet control over most of Eastern Europe? The difference between the "west" and the soviets is that after "liberating" countries from the Nazis they didn't leave.

If it's so "fair and square": why does the U.S. amd U.K. consider the Southern Kuriles to be Japanese territory under Russian occupation? Why did the European Parliament pass a resolution recommending that Russia return these islands to Japan?

Theft is theft and it's obvious to the entire world except to Russia. Sorry but this is blatant theft no matter whose side you're on.

No they weren't. The Southern Kuriles became Japanese by way of a negotiated treaty with Russia in 1855. USSR took advantage of the Cairo and Potsdam declarations wherein territories that Japan took by force would be taken away. That meant the Northern Kuriles and Sakhalin which Russia lost in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904/05. But USSR decided to use it as a ploy to STEAL islands that were never theirs to start with. That is why the other Allied powers in WWII objected to USSR's actions. For 70 years Russian behavior has been American business. And still continues to be.

@OssanAmerica

Soviet entry in the war against Japan and the exact date it would occur, had been agreed to well in advance. At Yalta, Stalin agreed that the Soviet Union would join the war 3 months after Germany surrendered, so their attack of August 8 was planned way ahead before Hiroshima or Nagasaki bombing.

Look, they were using Google map! Give em a brake! Pilot 1 "Hey, from a distance that looks like Tokyo Tower..." Pilot 2 "You know... maybe we should stop someplace and get directions!"

Hey, is anybody at home? Other member of this forum also pointed out that Soviet offensive operations in Manchuria and Kuril Chain were accompliched under early agreements with Allies. Bother to educate yourself before entering the discussion :-)

"Japan and USSR has a non-aggression pact which USSR unilaterally broke by attacking Japan in the last days of the war. It is the USSR/Russia that "started" the war with Japan.

So what?

So you admit that USSR unilaterally broke the Soviet-Japan Non Aggression pact and attacked Japan. Or are you going to tell me that Stalin told the Japanese that he was breaking it and going to attack? Therefore the conflict between USSR and Japan was STARTED by USSR.

So what? What is your point?

Obviously for the purpose of stealing territory just like they were doing in Eastern Europe.

English is not your first language, right? :-) You see no difference between seizure of a land and controlling a territory. In Eastern Europe Soviets did not grab foreign lands. They were simply in charge under liberated territories.

That meant the Northern Kuriles and Sakhalin which Russia lost in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904/05. But USSR decided to use it as a ploy to STEAL islands that were never theirs to start with.

Russia lost Kurils and South Sakhalin to Japan. Later Soviets regained those territories. Soviets did not bother earlier and nowadays Russia do not bother about hypocritical position of western powers.

That is why the other Allied powers in WWII objected to USSR's actions. For 70 years Russian behavior has been American business. And still continues to be.

For more than 70 years Uncle Sam has been trying to develop a monopolar World. For more than 70 years the USSR / Russia shows to Uncle Sam a Middle Finger.

Theft is theft and it's obvious to the entire world except to Russia. Sorry but this is blatant theft no matter whose side you're on.

Do not place "the Entire World" between Mexican and Canadian borderlines. Speak for yourself only. As for "blatant theft" it took place when eurotrash seized lands of Native Americans. A bright Example of a Blatant Theft, by the way :-)

technospere - perfectly said! Japan has no right to the territories, further on , it aint EU or US business at all.
