Japan begins issuing My Number IDs with integrated driver's license

I don't understand the use of having your drivers license integrated into the "my number card". AS stated in the article the information will not be visible, so you have no proof and the only people will be a police officer with a special card reader? Strange. Also, this means the cards must sync on the dates of expiry, too troublesome.

The digital ID for Japanese nationals is now here.

Under the new optional process, people can choose whether to have a standard driver's license or a My Number card with integrated license information. Those who own an integrated card can continue to use an additional physical driver's license if they wish.

At least for now, is optional. What do they expect paying fine in city hall?

Until the My Number my wife always had a problem providing an ID. She now uses that.

I'll just keep things as is until they becomes DYSFUNCTIONAL .

Driving abroad, outside of Japan, you need the Japanese Driving Licence AND the International Driving Permit.

Both cannot be replaced with the MyNumber card. I will therefore continue to ask and pay for the Japanese Driving Licence. Insurance companies are also asking if the Driving Licence is BLUE or GOLD, what about car rental companies etc. How can they see what kind of driving licence is in the MyNumber card?

Maybe you have to go to a Convenience Store and print these data out, similar to a Hanko Shomei or Juminhyo?

But will good drivers have a gold card?

Yohan, great point. I just rented a car and had to provide my driver’s license. I sure as hell don’t want some dude at Times Car Rental to have a reader and be able to see all my data, including medical and bank info!

Medical and bank details are not on the My Number card. Only contains information indicated on the card itself, such as the holder's name.

This system only slightly increase convenience for user, actual purpose is mere benefiting related corporations from taxpayers money.

People can acquire their integrated card at driver's license centers across the country. The My Number card is valid for 10 years.

It would be an incentive to get an integrated card if DL validity is upped to ten years as well. Some US states issue ten-year licenses and my Korean DL was valid for ten years too.
