Typhoon Vongfong? Can't they at least give it a name Japanese people can pronounce?

Of course, most Japanese can pronounce it, but forget it very soon. Number can get very easily relevant with each typhoon. It means number remind people of what kind of typhoon came.

I'm currently in the process of stockpiling massive volumes of alcohol in my apartment should this thing turn ugly. Keep your heads down, JT folk - stay safe.

Better test it first. You wouldn't want to be stockpiling dodgy grog.

This storm will be APOCALYPTIC. It will LITERALLY ravage umbrellas and TEAR headwear from its victims. Japan will never be the same. Or probably not.

Yawn....weakening as we speak.

Typically, nothing is mentioned about how climate change is making these super storms much more deadly, as the the United Nations meteorological agency says.

While I'm one of those who believe the current trend of global warming is due to excessive production of greenhouse gasses by homo sapiens and the rapid elimination of systems designed to scrub greenhouse gasses from the atmosphere (i.e. the clearing of the rain forests) by homo sapiens, even I think that we need to track more severe weather along with increased global temperatures before we can start correlating the two together. Of course, by the time the proof is irrefutable, it will probably be too late to do anything about it.

I love Japan. Wish you all the best there!

A good suggestion. Weather events are objects, not personalities. Names are confusing while number letter IDs are more efficient. Also number IDs skip any regional undertones, these are serious dangerous storms for everyone.

Typically, nothing is mentioned about how climate change is making these super storms much more deadly, as the the United Nations meteorological agency says. It is always just "unusual weather". Seems like just too much unusual weather around the planet recently to ignore that the pieces go together into one puzzle that provides a dire picture of what is too come more frequently if we keep consuming without limits.

I've already secured my tools on the roof. I'd like to point out that it's dangerous to climb up a ladder in a high winds and rain carrying things. Take care.

Hope there would be no loss of lives this time. In addition, i t won't mess up our Monday's schedules in Tokyo area.

"I was sincerely praying that it would go west."

Don't you like the Chinese? Nyuk nyuk!

Title should be "Okinawa braces for strongest storm this year"

If it is weakening to rain when reaching mainland Japan, what is there to brace for?

They are not "gibberish" names for many in this area of the world.

It sounds like Okinawa will get the worst of it. Stay safe from storm surge and here's hoping there's no more bad landslides on the mainland!

My university classes were cancelled last Monday and classes are scheduled for this Monday despite the holiday. This will be a tough call for my university. Could be watching the NFL two weeks in a row!

Agree. I don't like long gibberish names. Number is very familiar and international to all people and easier to remember which one was the worst or biggest in that year.

@gelendestrasse

Yeah, it looks like Okinawa is going to get hit hard. I wonder what the trains in Tokyo will be like on Monday.

I was just about to make the same statement as Vernie Jefferies... We'd rather it arrived on Tuesday... (for an extra long weekend !

It's a holiday on Monday in Japan. A good day to be off.

Stay safe Okinawa. Thinking of you all there. The eye is going right over by the looks of the track.

I was sincerely praying that it would go west. I guess I have to deal with it.

I was lighting candles and broke out the ouija board too. Same thing.

I hope it weakens rapidly before reaching land and just blows over quickly.

People in Kanto area don't have to worry since it will be weakened into tropical storm by the time it reaches there.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Well, the geniuses of the world couldn't do anything to stop the last typhoon, but maybe they can stop this one...

It's more coincidence than anything else, mainly due to the way the high pressure systems are located off Japan this year.

I am slightly confused by this statement. How could it not be a coincidence?
