I’ve been to Kanazawa a few times. It has lovely scenery at the foot of the mountains and has a very historic castle and grounds. However, other than those few things and a couple of rocking bars there’s not much else there. it also gets quite a lot of heavy snow through winter. Kanazawa, like many other regional cities and towns, has suffered the exodus of young people moving to the bigger cities for work. If they intend to make this place a gaming Mecca they will have to provide more than just game centers to attract young people.

Perhaps that is because E-Sports are only popular with nerds. Not everybody is a nerd, you know?

For the kind of money said nerds bring in, I wish I was one of said nerds.

Disillusioned - C'mon, give me the names of the half a dozen people who have become rich and famous playing video games.

Pewdiepie and Ninja, for one, and all these people below who have earned more than I have in a lifetime by playing video games competitively.

It's a pretty unhealthy mindset that everything that is not working constantly till you die is just a waste of time, and every moment of your life is supposed to be shackled to being as productive as you can be. I'm curious as to what your occupation is though, because for someone who says video gamers to get a real job, I do hope you have a job that is very productive to society yourself.

Japan lags behind because many Japanese players stick to Japan's home grown games and do not often play the popular one's many do elsewhere.

I am amazed at the number of people here who know little or nothing about e-sports.

I don't see how a game where you only use a couple of your fingers can be called a "sport".

I’ve heard arguments that darts, golf, cricket, figure skating, snooker and pool, archery and others shouldn’t be regarded as sports.

I’m not sure if it’s really an argument worth having.

Critics say esports cannot be categorized as a sport, but some point to an advantage that they are accessible to handicapped people. It was included as a demonstration sport at last year's Asian Games in Indonesia.

I'm glad that this is inclusive, often disabled people are thought of as an afterthought, or inconvenience.

For those who think the term 'sport' is a misnomer, what is it that defines a sport, that this is missing?

Stereotypical view on gaming culture from those who know nothing about it. It's like someone stuck in the 80s.

Very shortsighted and self deceptive. People playing these video games, usually are city kids, not country dwellers. It won't work.

I have no problem with these people decision to play computer games, I only object to calling it sports. It is detrimental for physical and mental health. Those who like to play these games or support those playing them professionally must not be in self denial about that.

I smoke cigars from time to time but I know it's bad for me and I accept that.  Calling it esports instead of computer or video games, does not change the facts that, playing this at professional levels is bad for a person.

esports have been huge for almost 10 years now but japan knows zip about them.

actually I am slightly worried that japan is developing its own bubble culture where technology from 2006 is considered the best and nothing else will ever happen and no other country will develop more advanced tech.

LET'S PLAY TAIKO DRUMS!!!

It is the media's fault.... even Japanese kids are brainwashed into thinking everything that is born of Japan is better than elsewhere.... even games. The media constantly does Geinojin strewn shows watching cultures outside of Japan but rarely do they cover things and successes of anything other than Japan. Just one big Circle of dillusional thinking.

Japan lags behind because nobody wants to have dating sim games at their esports events.

Esports? I have never heard of it.

rocketpanda - Stereotypical view on gaming culture from those who know nothing about it. It's like someone stuck in the 80s.

A stereotypical comment from someone stuck to a video screen. What is 'gaming culture"? Video games are a pass time for those with spare time to play them. Perhaps you can play competitively and maybe win money, but it's still only a pass time. C'mon, give me the names of the half a dozen people who have become rich and famous playing video games. What about the other tens of millions who just waste their lives away ion a virtual world? There's your 'gaming culture!. My advice to extreme gamers is, get a hair cut and get a real job!
