And Japanese women want the right to keep their surname.
I’m curious how a male, regardless of sexual orientation, becomes a sole foster parent on official documents… I would assume the child is a niece or nephew of a deceased sibling because Japan makes it almost impossible for heterosexual couples to become foster parents to begin with.

Do they still have separate family Kosekis?

In Japan, this going back centuries, a man can adopt his wife's family name. This usually happens when the wife's family has no brothers, and the wife's family is quite rich and that is when she marries the husband will adopt the wife's family name.

Good. Japan’s government is slowly catching up with Japanese society inclusion style of the normal resident.

I think so, unless the law has changed in the last 30 years or so.

If same-sex marriage were allowed, wouldn't it be natural for the wife-side of the couple to be allowed to adopt the surname of the husband?
The catch is: How would that coordinate with the current trend that calls for a woman's right to retain her virgin name even after marriage.
