Its all fun and games unti it results a repeat of Deepwater Horizon. What are they going to do about it if they screw it up, going so deep?

Deepwater Horizon was an oil spill, where an oil-drilling rig had an accident.

This is a research probe.

While there certainly are risks of a different type when digging so deep, a repeat of Deepwater Horizon won't happen unless there was a miraculous deposit of oil down there that no one ever found. As for those other types of risks, I personally don't know any, but there is always the chance of something going wrong. Hopefully, the research data gotten from the probe will be worth the other kinds of risks involved in digging so deep.

maybe testing for radiation..

Deepwater Horizon was an oil spill,

Are you trying to be funny? The root cause of the oil spill was an out of control oil gusher that they could not cap, something you can get when you go punching holes in the sea floor trying to get to oil deposits.

Wrong. The root cause was the pressure enviro - nazis placed on BP. Does anyone with a brain in their head actually believe these companies want to drill five miles out to sea and through one mile of seawater????

The root cause was the failure of safety control equipment, which is what the 'eco-nazis' were talking about.

I don't think having more people demanding better control over the drilling would have resulted in a worse spill?

And there's your earthquakes..... From the drilling braking the earths crust
