Japan deports stranded North Korean boat crew

Were rhey offered asylum, after all Japan has signed up to the UN Convention for Refugees.

I suspect that Japanese immigration authority's did not go out of their way to inform these North Kotreans of their rights.

It was reported in previous articles that all of the North Korean crews had requested that they be returned to North Korea. No one asked for asylum.

Not a good idea to ask for asylum if you have family or friends in North Korea. They'd disappear pretty quickly.

They have been through a hell of an ordeal for being just fishermen. Not like they were spies.

Just guys trying to feed themselves and family.

I feel sorry for their families back home. They were away from home for months, no fish to bring back and winter in NK.

I don't think "deport" is a good word choice here.The eight men who have gone back to NK weren't convicted of a crime and had requested to be sent back."Repatriate"is much more appropriate.The captain,if and when he is found guilty,will be deported.

Most likely they would be debriefed for intelligence, and treated as “heroes” who defied Japan.

Trespassing one country’s shores is illegal. In some countries they would shoot them on sight. It is believable they were treated with dignity and respect while the deportation process lasted.
