bryuinfan, what I have read about Iwami Ginzan sounds interesting; I even had a small silver Mame-ita-gin ingot blob coin from there. Have you been there? Not good?

_Don't do it just to just to bring in more tourists.

I agree. On the least worth UNESCO site in Japan, I would say Iwami Ginzan in Shimane.

And if the real aim is to bring in more tourists, then DON'T DO IT. These sites are beautiful without any stupid designation and signposts.

forests that home to rare species such as the Amami rabbit and Okinawa rail."

“Half of our staff are now devoted to dealing with submissions from Tokyo,” says UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova.

How embarassing.

Pukey2- Mate if you think this is bad listen to what she had to add:

Some of those fax machines they are using could be placed on the world heritage list,” says Bokova.

That says it all

“The panel also questioned the validity of having so many different locations in the proposal.”

I love it! This says it all. I can not believe that while we joke about Japan just expediting the process and having the whole nation registered, they were actually trying to register Kagoshima and Okinawa. Unbelievable! Haha

Of all the UNESCO heritage sites in Japan, awarding that status to the silk factory was the most scandalous.

Or the planet?

There is no point to making World Heritage site declarations. Every place on the planet is our heritage regardless of the value assigned to it by some unknown group of people.

Or the planet?

just register the whole country as Unesco World Heritage, and be done with it.
