Lamilly.

That 20 years was called

The United States Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands abbr. USCAR (琉球列島米国民政府

One of the (many) weird things that all of the vehicles drove on the right side of the road. Then overnight in 1978 they switched to the left.

Residents of Okinawa had special passports.

Emperor opens festivals marking 50th anniversary of Okinawa's return

Should read.....

"Emperor opens festivals marking 50th anniversary of Okinawa's partial return."

There are still 32 US military facilities with more than 47,000 US citizens occupying Okinawan land.

I remember the mood at the time of the reversion. It was not a “right” vs. “left” question, though one sensed that for some people there was more fervor for the cause of reversion in the abstract than for the actual welfare of Okinawa’s citizenry. Fortunately, that is not true of the imperial visitors, past and present.

50th anniversary of Okinawa's return... Journalist Nishiyama Takichi was arrested and his career destroyed for (accurately) reporting on a (then) secret Japan-U.S. agreement

Okinawa returned to Japan 50 years ago. It is fortunate for Okinawa and Japan that they were not conquered by the USSR.

Stay away from Okinawa, there’s military there, it’s no good for you….that way, it won’t be overrun by out-of-townies.

More accurately and in touch with reality, it should read....

"Emperor opens festivals marking 50th anniversary of Okinawa's return to Japanese sovereignty

Japan hosts 32 US military facilities with more than 47,000 US personnel.

The article doesn’t have any reference to the Governor of Okinawa, Danny Tamaki-why not?

No reference or quote from an Okinawa?

Everyting is joy and light then..

Which is....?

People fail to realize the reality of what would happen to Japan if the US Military left...

My friends and I visit Okinawa once every couple of years and I always find it "weird" that I, an American, get a different treatment (in a good way) from my Japanese friends. They say Oki people hate the bases being there (I'm sure a lot do) but when we go shopping on Kokusai Dori, I usually get a discount but my Japanese friends don't. So now, if they find something they want, I just go buy it for them!

Wont be either, as while he may have won another term as Gov. 7 cities in Okinawa that had Mayoral elections ALL went against him and his "All Okinawa" dwindling coalition.

Even the city of Naha turned to an LDP candidate, as the local electorates are getting sick and tired of the Denny mantra of only talking about the landfill.

The people have other things on their minds, like how they are going to feed their kids!

Dont believe "they" or the folks here who are constantly harping about the "hate". It just aint true!
