Japan favors Aegis Ashore over THAAD to boost missile defense

The AEGIS ashore system utilizes the SM-3 ⅡA missiles that have wider coverage which is a joint development between Japan and US. This system will be upgraded when the SM-3 ⅡB comes online which is said to have a even more longer range.

The Battle group is very near by, yet they didn't knock the missile down. It travel 700km over the sea off Japan. Great time to show why they have deployed a Battle group with the capability to knock off missiles. ????

I give credit to Japan for NOT dumping the money into what it takes for research and development of systems like these. Japan has purchased all of that, and will tweak and make improvements where they deem necessary, as they typically already do. Pretty damn smart.

Wise nations invest more on diplomacy rather than weapon protection systems.

Well I hope they go with the better protection and not just the cheaper option. Does anyone know which system is better at shooting down a missile fired from a nearby nation?

dont know much much about military or weaponry, do you? Nor much about attack vs. defense, clearly.

This system could be used as an attack weapon just not against sovereign soil.

It can and most likely shoot down enemy satellites for communication and observation. The SM-3 BlkⅡA

has a range of 2,500 Km so it will be most potent against those spies in the sky.

When the USN shot down the satellite with the SM-3, it was one in low-Earth orbit, and the USN ship had to place itself directly under the satellite's path to shoot it down. That indictates that AEGIS Ashore will only be able to shoot down low-orbit satellites which pass directly overhead.

Any nation facing missile threats should have a missile defense system, it is disappointing that Japan has never seriously developed one on its own to meet its own defense needs. It is fully allowed by the current constitution.

Sure hope the system works well. The missile is only one part of things. The radar, guidance, controls systems etc. are all just as important.

Japan could also consider Israeli Iron Dome system as it proven to be very effective and saved many lives. Though it is short-range, only 70 km, so it can intercept missiles only in the proximity of the large cities. Also they can be used in combination with longe-range Aegis systems.

As for tomahawks, they are for attacking. The THAAD system, even though if bought by Japan is still controlled by America. its main purpose is to threaten Russia and China, that is why America is so keen to ring those two nations with them from both asia and europe. i can see india next to be persuaded.
