Everyone will get it eventually. Wash hands, be smart, be healthy and get enough sleep so when you do get it you give the best chance to yourself to avoid hospitalization.

@Kniknanobbaer

Plenty of testimonies above. You just need to read them. Perhaps you were writing your post as they are posting and so missed them. Happens sometimes.

The corona virus panic has ... Stopped my parents being able visiting their grandkids ... Caused a unbelievably itchy stress rash ... Not infected one single person I am even remotly linked to. ... Killed no one in my prefecture ... Killed no child or young person in my country ... Killed less people globaly than the flu ... Infected less people than the flu ... Welcome to panic in the 21st century ...

All I can say is, lets just hope you are correct that "its all in the mind", and check back in a couple of weeks when Japan is further along the curve. Exponential growth is a funny thing, as an epidemiologist could tell you. Unfortunately, unlike radiation exposure which can reap its rewards years or decades later, ignorance of a highly infectious and deadly virus is likely to come back to roost in the days or weeks ahead.

And I hope your stress rash is better by now, carpslidy.

i don't know where I am anymore, is this really what Japan is all about?

is this what this administration has worked hard for past 10 years.

I see some of your comments and see the brainwashing and feel really bad/sad for ya.

This is not Japan pride, when you hide behind your corrupt and rotten culture,

this scenario feels like the movie " Wizard of Oz" more recently Rome or Spartacus dramas,and yes, history does repeat itself when corruption and deception is the guidelines for the ruling party.

I just feel bad for the common people for natives and foreigners who will be suffering the consequences

of your corrupted leaders and groups.

On this issue, i don't need to argue because i just feel so bad for you all. all of you.

本間 ゆり said "For me it is clear that it is not a good situation but it is much better than Europe and China that did not take good care of it right from the start."

If China didn't take good care of the situation, you and me will be in a very different world by now.

The virus could be already around for some times before China started to notice the epidemic. You could have the virus without knowing it, all depending if you have a proper test, let alone no test at all.

@zichi

Here if you want a more detailed map : https://www.coromap.info/ (there was an article about it but perhaps you missed it). It is made by a student in Kyushu, if I am not mistaking.

Does someone have a link to the map ? Some would be interested in seeing the data available with it (characteristics of the spot, period, suspected cases, tested cases, positives cases, testing of related cases, ... and so on). It could help have a better understanding of spread.

Jeff Ko:

I find it hilarious that Japan choose to disclose 15 locations at the same time. I guess it never occurred to them to disclose such critical info as they find...

It has been available here from the start.

carpslidy, use internet for your business and loved ones. China and South Korea booth have 5G networks, and it helps a lot. Japan isn't behind much, though Abe delayed the development last year by refusing 5G technologies from neighbours. Time ti change. Time to build integrated 5G network in Great Northeast Asia.

The corona virus panic has-

Stopped my parents being able visiting their grandkids.

Stopped my daughter going to school.

Put my and my friends businesses in danger.

Stopped my students from learning and having fun with their friends.

Stopped friends from inviting each other out for dinner

Caused a unbelievably itchy stress rash .

The Corona virus has

Not infected one single person I am even remotly linked to.

Killed no one in my prefecture.

Killed no child or young person in my country.

Killed less people globaly than the flu.

Infected less people than the flu.

Welcome to panic in the 21st century.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

A few dear friends of mine, in Miyagi, are turning up missing because of high fevers! Of cause, I pray for their health, but I wonder if the numbers of cases of Covid19 are right? Maybe its just me! Get well soon baby's!!

It seems Japan has been doing very well because not many people have died of coronavirus so far. Japan will not accept the CPR test for millions of people that maybe want the CPR test whatever. If hospitals accept all people, hospitals are going to be out of control and in big panic just like Italy or China, actually no beds for millions of patients. So doctors will select out patients with serious symptom, then these patients will take CPR test, if test is positive, they will be hospitalized for cure. Japan will not let no-symptom/mild symptom patients to take CPR test, otherwise hospitals would be out of control and in big panic just like Italy or China.

The ship came from another location, so it shouldn't be like the case in Japan. This is considered an international convenyance. Why the transmission did not take place inside Japanese territory. It was not a broadcast by citizens. And almost half is recovered. And also if go to see we have a long time with Corona in Japan that so I think that the situation here is much more controlled than Europe. I am confident that it will be much better here. Despite criticism of Prime Minister Abe, he did one thing for certain. In suspending classes. For me it is clear that it is not a good situation but it is much better than Europe and China that did not take good care of it right from the start.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

There's plenty more to be found if Japan wishes to find them. But hey, when all you truly care about are the Olympics, why bother.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

The info is more pinpointed and helpful. This map is better than one counting confirmed numbers by prefecture.

@Jim Harper

Selective testing and screening prior to hospital visit are also employed by some other countries (UK, US, Germany, France, Nordic countries, to name a few), in a varying way and degree. In Japan, testing can be prioritized and fast-tracked to "risky" people regardless of symptoms such as those who have travelled back home from abroad.

Testing amounts have tripled or more in Japan since earlier this month. While confirmed numbers have naturally increased as a result, the ratio of confirmed cases to total testing numbers seems diverted from that of some other countries. More remarkably both death toll and number of critically ill patients have remained significantly low. Japan may be lucky, may be able to get the way out of the crisis.

If any of you doubt SJs comments, please refer to Aso’s 2012 comments on

the elderly. This is a major incident and the government by seizing an opportunity. The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein has all the info you need. https://www.google.co.jp/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2013/jan/22/elderly-hurry-up-die-japanese

@gokai_wo_maneku

The explanation on the map makes no sense. It says:

green: 5 or more

blue: 10 or more

red: 50 or more

If you have 5 or more, you also have 10 or more and 50 or more. There must be a mistake in this explanation.

I'd definitely have translated the above as 5-9, 10-49, 50 or more. In my translation work, I've come across numerous examples of ranges being expressed in baffling ways like above. I always insist on changing the style.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

If there are no substantial addition to pneumonia cases due to covid19 then there should actually be fewer cases of pneumonia year on year because as has been reported before in the news flu cases has waned significantly. The decrease was attributed probably to increased awareness and precautions taken due to covid19

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Japan can boost and rejuvenate her economy in the future by just letting them die by the natural force called the novel coronavirus. That is why the Abe administration seems to do nothing. And the UK will follow Japan.

@SJ The convenience of this virus for governments that can't afford to pay out pensions and take care of the elderly as promised struck me as well. It kills those who collect from the government while hardly effecting young and soon to be taxpaying citizens. It can't have escaped their notice.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

For those protesting that there is no need to test without symptoms, you partially correct. However;

(a) People who have been in close contact with infected persons should be tested regardless of symptoms. As everybody (including the Japanese government) knows, symptoms can take a while to develop while some carriers display no symptoms at all.

(b) As has been well documented in Japan, individuals with symptoms are not being tested. The first confirmed person with coronavirus in my area had already been to a clinic or a hospital EIGHT TIMES before someone actually tested him for the disease. This is the current pattern here. Testing requires written application to the Department of Health, who are notoriously slow at the best of times. And with a government that is absolutely determined to show that it has everything under control, I doubt many permissions are given without concrete evidence. This is a contrast to other countries, where any possible sufferer is tested on the doctor's orders, rather than those of an unelected bureaucrat.

As long as this continues, the idea that Japan is largely free of the disease is a fiction. It might well be, but without increased testing we will never know. This is a dangerous path to follow that has a lot more to do with the government's reputation and the Olympics (which we all know are unlikely to happen).

The gave you antibiotics, what was the diagnosis?

He diagnosed both of my daughters with ear infections. He said we just have to wait it out and gave medication for the symptoms. I don't know what the grandparents were diagnosed with.

Thanks for nothing, china CCP liars for hiding the truth for so long and to the Wuhan idiots for allowing 5 million to leave the state before admitting you screwed up.

I agree but the response is the difference. You have to get up and fight instead of saying you got punched. Taiwan has millions of visitors from China and thousands of Taiwanese work in China. They started testing on December 31st and started banning people from Wuhan January 2nd and eventually all of China by the end of the January.

They had the same amount of time as the rest of the world. The truth was hidden from them for so long as well. The US didn't start to get serious until last week March 11th. Trump was saying the coronavirus was a hoax made by the Democratic Party. Japan's Basic Policy was not announced until Feb 25th.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

I have the same story as JJ Jetplane, the entire family got sick one after another with the symptoms he mentioned. Although to be honest the fever lasted shorter than 4 days. But at work some of the folks had fever for 4 days and even though they tried calling the special line, they never got through. Would be nice to think I've already had it, however you can catch it again and again, it seems, so it doesn't really matter.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Why isn't the Japanese death rate higher?

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

@JJ Jetplane

The gave you antibiotics, what was the diagnosis?

5 ( +6 / -1 )

aren't all of you tired of making the same comments every day regarding the lack of testing. same people, same comment. who are you actually pointing this out to? because you all have the same opinion.

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

Yes thanks but not according to the map in the post.Kobe green Tatsuno/Himeji blue?

This may be due to how a cluster is defined. It may refer just to cases that are related (those that went to the same club, had contact with the same infected person, etc.) There may be more non-clustered cases in Kobe than Himeji. Unfortunately, the article doesn't provide that info.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The worst part about it is that there was a confirmed case for the ward office where my children go to school and the weeks leading up to that, several children had their 3 year check up there.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

We all had fevers for a few days. Sore throat. Cough. Phlegm. Headache. All 5 of us has the same symptoms and the symptoms seemed to show up almost 3 days apart. My wife seems completely fine so she's the lucky one.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

I believe I had the corona virus. Japan doesn't check anything.

My youngest daughter was sick. They gave her some antibiotics and said we didn't need to check her. She got her older sister sick and then I was sick. We all had the same symptoms. While we are finally doing better. Her grandmother and grandfather now have the same symptoms. Their doctor told them they don't need to get tested and they should just take medication and rest.

Japan seems to be running from the truth.

7 ( +11 / -4 )

There are guidelines for testing to minimize wastage of manpower and resources. If we everyone who wants to be tested but not likely to have the disease it will be a colossal waste

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Red dots everywhere soon. More like cluster...Oh can not say that here.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

How much does it cost for a test in Japan? is it free of charge? a good friend of mine says his girlfriend in the US would be charged around $700 so no one is getting tested!!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I find it hilarious that Japan choose to disclose 15 locations at the same time. I guess it never occurred to them to disclose such critical info as they find. But Japanese will believe that those 15 clusters were discovered on the same day lol

With the pandemic having spread all over Europe, I guess Japan feels less shame to disclose such a shameful, dirty... thing! Lol

0 ( +4 / -4 )

So you mean that you have no evidence that there has been a recent spike in pneumonia deaths? That you simply made that up?

If you actually read what I said, you will know that I have already answered your question. This is kinda fun! I can see why Japanese politicians talk this way lol

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

@Divinda..

While I agree about the lack of testing availability, what they can't really hide that easily are ICU numbers and deaths.

No reports I heard of hospitals being overwhelmed here as they are in Italy or Korea.

I too wondered if there had been an increase in “non corona” pneumonia deaths. There has not been. It would seem that the number of serious cases isn’t too far from the official figure but the number of minor symptom cases is unknown. At least a zero added to the official tally.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

@SJ

Abe is a greater genius than Trump.

A bag full of hammers a greater genius than Trump.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Thanks for nothing, china CCP liars for hiding the truth for so long and to the Wuhan idiots for allowing 5 million to leave the state before admitting you screwed up.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Already answered in my previous reply. That is the best answer you are ever gonna get.

In that, you said:

"Uncivil thing to do is to fudge a number in a phrase such as "over 50" rather than reporting the exact number. Based on the Japanese govt response to Coronavirus so far, you will never get a straight answer. But it's not hard to take an educated guess. But if you are the kind of person who thinks cruise ship quarantine was the best approach, be my guest and believe their lies."

So you mean that you have no evidence that there has been a recent spike in pneumonia deaths? That you simply made that up?

red: 50 or more

If you have 5 or more, you also have 10 or more and 50 or more. There must be a mistake in this explanation.

I don't understand why you don't understand - it seems pretty straightforward.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Again, @Jeff Ko, if you have info about a spike in pneumonia deaths, please share the source.

Already answered in my previous reply. That is the best answer you are ever gonna get.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Jeff Ko, if you have info about a spike in pneumonia deaths, please share the source.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

@Jeff Ko

if this is true, please share the data and the source. Seriously. I and I'm sure others would like to know.

He’s in agreement with you.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

These numbers are laughably low.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

@SJ

The numbers will be higher if there’s more testing. More Koreans and Chinese visit Japan than these other infected countries. That said, I hope I am wrong.

The Olympics is a major injection of cash flow. The country was or is counting on it. I believe the numbers are kept low for the sake of the Games, but I could be wrong.

Japan’s problem - and every country has problems- is pride and a sense of superiority.

The Japanese have the will to host the Olympics against all odds and will not be shy on patting themselves on the back for hosting the Games under these circumstances.

The interviews will have people crying saying how hard it was not knowing whether the Games would be be held or not but still having to train. It’s grit and determination. The flip side is stubbornness but it’s not a let the elderly die lest the government be overburdened plan that you’re thinking of imo.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Abe is a greater genius than Trump.

Which isnt saying a whole heck of a lot!

School kids everywhere today at the big Aeon Mall near me. I was only there for an hour but noticed McDonalds was packed with big groups eating and playing games, game center was busy and public seating areas taken up by more young teens hanging out. Guess they are getting bored with all the time off.

12 ( +12 / -0 )

What do they mean by "over 50"? Do they mean 51? Do they mean 5001?

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Where is the info on the map in English ???. See japan is not yet global !!! or internationally ready as a international player.

I’m guessing you wouldn’t be happy until Japan makes this information available in Vulcan.

invalid CSRF

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

@zichi

Most of the Hyogo cases have occurred in Kobe city.

Several in Kobe and a few in Ashiya that I know of.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

While I agree about the lack of testing availability, what they can't really hide that easily are ICU numbers and deaths.

I guess that explains the explosion of death due not to Coronavirus but to plain old pneumonia lol

6 ( +10 / -4 )

lots of automatic doors (so no handles to touch) and people already wear masks this season due to cedar pollen.

Thats not really true. Lots of buttons to push at the eki, straps to hold on to in the train. Also the shima island desk arrangement and company enviroment (IAQ is a joke here) is a virus paradise.

10 ( +10 / -0 )

Where is the info on the map in English ???. See japan is not yet global !!! or internationally ready as a international player.

1 ( +7 / -6 )

@SJ,

Whilst I hope that is not true...I have often wondered that myself....)

2 ( +4 / -2 )

People should have a test available only if they are showing symptoms unless they are in a critical occupation like doctor/nurse/ cop/firefighter.

Zichi is completely correct. You don't test healthy people unless you have enough test kits to go around. Just because someone is negative today doesn't mean they are immune to the virus and could wind up sick or as an asymptomatic carrier the next day/week, etc. An asymptomatic carrier would also more than likely not feel the need to get tested often (if there were enough test kits to do so in the first place).

1 ( +3 / -2 )

While I agree about the lack of testing availability, what they can't really hide that easily are ICU numbers and deaths.

No reports I heard of hospitals being overwhelmed here as they are in Italy or Korea.

And there have been only 24 reported deaths out of 839 cases (non-cruise ship), which is roughly 3% and on par with WHO estimates.

And the first cases started in Japan 6 weeks ago... way longer than most of Europe, so deaths should be appearing by now (unless they are never tested post-mortum).

Seriously, I scratch my head on this too, and all I can attribute it to is that Japan is generally a clean place to begin with, no kissing and hugging or even many handshakes, lots of automatic doors (so no handles to touch) and people already wear masks this season due to cedar pollen.

Really, whenever I go abroad or back to the US, I'm often disgusted with how people live (guess I've been here too long. I bow on the phone now too...).

10 ( +13 / -3 )

This photo from The Health Ministry is probably accurate if it was dated February 16th.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

People should have a test available only if they are showing symptoms unless they are in a critical occupation like doctor/nurse/ cop/firefighter.

Right on! Who cares if people with no symptoms spread around whatever they have freely lol

8 ( +10 / -2 )

they aren’t testing people with mild symptoms of corona. A friend has similar symptoms to corona and he called the corona virus hotline but they said that because he has no high fever it’s not necessary to test for corona. He also asked if he could go out. They said yes. Therefore the case number of corona is low compared to other countries. Cause they are only counting those with severe symptoms. All the while people with mild symptoms are running about spreading it around

14 ( +16 / -2 )

@CrucialS

Yep, business as usual then? You living in Japan? Then it's all good.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Good information.  Not sure why so many want to disbelieve the government here (and elsewhere).  Do people really think that the government will lie jus tto allow the Olympics to go on?

-8 ( +7 / -15 )

Why would you test everyone? It’s a limited resource that’s expensive. You only need to use the test for at risk persons who are suspected to have corona virus.

Since corona virus is a chest cold for the majority of the it would be a waste to use a test on them. it’s a very weak and over glorified virus compared to influenza and other sicknesses. Once this first pass phenomenon ends, it will never receive the same attention it’s been given.

-14 ( +6 / -20 )

Don't believe the government, don't believe the numbers. There are probably 20 times as many cases. Japan MUST test more.

16 ( +19 / -3 )

@Jeff Co

I actually think should say, MONO sugoi.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

No test no test no test! Japan sugoi!

9 ( +13 / -4 )

The entire country is a big cluster now.

Meanwhile, the rest of the world, country by country is closing down. Italy Spain, gonem France, Slovenia, about to, Britian only a few days away.

Oceania basically closed for travel.

Afrcian countries one by one, closing down. Kenya, Rwanda already closed.

In the the US, NY and LA closing down. Others will follow suit.

Many Asian countries are closing, but, not Japan.

In Japan it is almost business as usual, because it is a safety country.

19 ( +22 / -3 )

"the government is hiding the truth to protect the Olympics"

I have not noticed any cases where high profile people have the virus in Japan. Australia has people in the news with it, politicians with it and sporting people with it. The virus is not selective and does not hide under rocks. Surely it is more wide spread that we are being lead to believe.

BUT is that so bad, at least we can still go and buy groceries.

11 ( +15 / -4 )

People going on about testing. Keep in mind that and this is not my opinion, you can be negative the day you are tested and unknowingly become positive before your test results come back. Just be careful and live life as safe as possible.

14 ( +15 / -1 )

No tests and no infections means no cancellation!

That's what they want to believe. The truth is an entirely different matter.

6 ( +11 / -5 )

shhhhhh see no evil hear no evil and all that...

Olympics must go on!

have faith in our supreme leader Abe...

he would never lie to us 'ippan jin'

God help us all!!

17 ( +21 / -4 )

There are probably more, but the government is hiding the truth to protect the Olympics. It is the same in the US. No tests and no infections means no cancellation!

26 ( +33 / -7 )

Sheeeze louizzz.. They cant be found if those with symptoms are denied virus testing
