I am not sure if I’m buying that wild salmon has parasites and these tank fish wouldn’t.

Most other farmed food isn’t as good as the real thing.

The innovation could be a massive boon for Japan, where a 2017 survey found salmon was the country's favourite sushi fish.

Really??? I didn't know that. I thought it was maguro.

Norway, who introduced your country to salmon, who actually made your people discover the safety of eating salmon, and now you're trying to beat them with their own market strategy! Wow, that's rude.

You're saying that one day Japan can tip Norway of the top spot for salmon export. The country who introduced you to salmon, the country who made you see the benefits of salmon. And now you want to beat them? That's as cynical as you can get it. And it's a lack of respect and appreciation!

too much plastic and pollution in the sea to eat from. Far cleaner to invest in farming of local vegetables

There's been a number of outbreaks in regards to disease or parasites infecting Northern Hemisphere or Chilean farmed Salmon - that could explain the massive spike in sales of Australian farmed Salmon to Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

I would like to see the filtration system they have, because Ive been keeping koi carp for 35 years in the UK, filters have got smaller, more efficient, and just better all around, this teck, has been around for some time, first is a drum filter which removes solid waste down to 50 microns the second stage would be a bacteria filter, and then a UV filter, as for the power side do they use sola panels? also do they gut and clean the fish before its exported? if so what do they do with all of the internal bits that are removed? do they make it into compost, fertiliser for gardeners?

Just grow Okinawa yams. They don't run away, and are not a GMO. Taste amazing and are a great staple food as well as versatile in a variety of meals. Stop the encroachment of a Western Diet and all the diseases that entails. Put some land back to use in Shikoku and elsewhere. Improve food security as well as not be ingesting plastics from an increasingly polluted ocean. Would help Japan get off fish dependencies and stop contributing to fish diseases. It would add clean normal food

Parasites that infect wild salmon are connected to the feces of pinnipeds. That's why salmon has never been a sushi/sashimi ingredient in Japan until the advent of farmed salmon. Salmon historically has been salt preserved in Japan. The Ainu people got around the parasite problem by freezing the salmon outside and thawing it before eating it raw.

Farmed salmon, because it relies on pens in the oceans, has for the most part beaten the parasite problem with antibiotics, but the high density enclosed areas have increased mortality from diseases.

Norway did not introduce salmon to Japan, they've been eating it for centuries. The first salmon used in Japan for sushi came from farms in Chile established by Japanese trading firms. Norway is just one of several countries that farm salmon and just happens to be the dominant producer right now.

"Nichiro Corp, now Maruha Nichiro Corp., first succeeded in farming salmon in 1981 in Chile, and paved the way for the development of the marine farming industry in this country."
