Finally catching up with the rest of the world.

Why wait until after golden week?

Why wait until after golden week?

One last maskfest, just for old times sake.

23 ( +27 / -4 )

Why wait until after golden week?

Got to do it sometime.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

So late to the party.

Is there even a Japan made Covid vaccination yet?

If all of the world reacted as slowly as Japan does we would have been wiped out a long time ago.

-5 ( +8 / -13 )

Lone joggers and dog walkers in my local park wearing their masks still.

If all of the world reacted as slowly as Japan does we would have been wiped out a long time ago.

I say their reaction has been pretty much on point, considering the whole tragic affair was unchartered water. No lockdowns, no bullying the population, relatively few deaths....

Compared to China, US and mostly anywhere else, Japan did very well.

Covid symptoms: runny nose, sneezing, sore throat.

What took them so long?

-2 ( +13 / -15 )

Now I feel SO MUCH safer, thank you useless bureaucrats!

0 ( +13 / -13 )

But a week or so ago there was an article about the coming 9th wave that experts say will be worse than any of the previous waves.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

...paving the way for full normalization of social and economic activities.

It will be a very long path.

よし!!!

..

btw

I stopped wearing my mask a few weeks ago…;

THREE YEARS……; … enough is enough.

May 8th... the day will come and go for 99.9% of us living in Japan just like any other because you know nothing will change. Although, that said, going forward tourism may pick up quite heavily, may, and if it does Japan just does not have an available labor force to handle it.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

Say what you like, I'll continue wearing the mask.

-14 ( +6 / -20 )

I will be returning to Japan for the first time since 2019 on May 22. If you see a blond guy maskless, that will be me. And no, I will not care what you think.

-3 ( +14 / -17 )

I only got vaxed once back in 2021. Never got another and glad they are downgrading it to a flu. Hospital and clinics will be all accessible when you have a fever

Finally catching up with the rest of the world.

3 in 10 people are walking unmasked here in Kinshicho.

Cant wait for the day people will be actually embarassed for walking alone with a mask on

Its about time Japanese government ( waved ) goodbye to this subject.

Just about every country in the world has returned to normal, yet 80% of Japanese still continue to hide behind the mask.

6 ( +13 / -7 )

The government has said it will reclassify COVID-19 to Class 5 diseases like seasonal influenza from May 8, meaning a state of emergency will no longer be issued when a resurgence of infection occurs.

Shouldn’t that read “if”?

And this story isn’t clear, but are they also going to do away with tests, and vaccine requirements at entry?

A “flu” doesn’t require tests or vaccinations, for entry into country.

No need to worry. You are not the only foreign tourist in Japan. You are also not the only one who is blonde, nor are you the only one who is maskless. I doubt anyone will know it's you.

12 ( +14 / -2 )

Good. This is long overdue. But better late than never.

5 ( +10 / -5 )

Finally catching up with the rest of the world.

I sure hope not. The numbers of people who died in some countries are staggering

3 ( +10 / -7 )

Lot of younger people unmasked but the older folks still masked up,scared I guess? Btw I stopped wearing mine 2 weeks after my first jab, guess what I’m still alive!

0 ( +7 / -7 )

Let’s now see if a significant number of people stop wearing their masks in the few days following the 8th of May.If not they we will be here forever. So sad not to be able to see the faces of people we talk too.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Still seeing the majority of school kids masked up - clearly anxiety now not disease related. The fear is endemic and will take yeas to unravel. There should be an urgent national campaign to unmask the young and healthy. Social pressure can work both ways. Undo what has been done.

I posted day one that COVID was a virus that cannot be killed and that the virus was not going away. I was thumb down and JT blocked the post again and again. Now JT has stopped blocking these post on Covid because it has formally been decided that COVID is no different than the flu!. IN OTHER WORDS IT IS a virus and you can not kill a virus.

Japan formally decides to downgrade COVID-19 to flu level

Thank god, Japan (rightly or wrongly) did it their own way and do what they thought was right to protect its citizens. No need to succumb to external views and pressures.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

An odd choice of date. Why not before Golden Week so people can fully enjoy themselves without the gloom of Covid hanging over their heads?

0 ( +3 / -3 )

So the masks will be coming off, right?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

An odd choice of date. Why not before Golden Week so people can fully enjoy themselves without the gloom of Covid hanging over their heads?

Same reason retailers avoid software changes during holidays and banks during tax season. Risk management. By doing it right after they give themselves almost an entire year of runway to make changes and react to what happens.

Will May 8 mark the day that those in charge of all those hapless ever-masked clerks, restaurant workers, and store staff DEEM their employees can finally take off the face huggers? If so, I will return to shop and dine in a non-dystopian environment, at long, long, long last. Also, stop insulting our intelligence and remove the useless, "magic" plastic shielding and drapery. Free at last!

People in this comment section for the last three years: “Wearing a mask should be a free choice left up to the individual and they shouldn’t be judged for it!”

Japan finally makes mask wearing optional

Same JT commenters: “Why are people still choosing to wear masks?! They’re wrong and should be ashamed of themselves!”

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Finally getting to see faces and talk directly to people instead of the impenetrable plastic wall to seperate people!
