They should add to their assessment that it was the Japanese who invented the lithium ion battery and the blue LED. hahaha

And according to the attached website, Japan is not so terrible.

Carbon dioxide emissions per capita:

Palau 58 tons

United States 16 tons

Japan 9 tons

China 8 tons

So these people flew to Eqypt in their fuel-burning, exhaust producing, private jets?

@kurisupisu There is no national subsidy but there are plenty of grants at the prefectoral and municipal level. Even in Tokyo you can get subisdies, for example Minato ward offers 100,000 yen/kW for a maximum of 400,000 jpy, and this includes not just businesses but also individuals. Of course Japan can do better, but saying nothing is done/available is not true, a quick research shows that.

Time to ignore these international meetings on climate change. This is what they are resorting to. And carbon emissions? Keep in going up baby. Then they introduce these kind of tactics.

Japan winning this award would be because of geography, no ? Buy default Japan should always win it. Who won it last year?

Finally, I wonder what the carbon footprint (and total cost) is for the conference ? Bet they won't publish that, eh!

Being one of the least polluting countries in the world, Japan doesn’t deserve such an honor. We’ll see who’s financing this nongovernmental organization by watching which countries will receive which awards.

6 ( +17 / -11 )

world's biggest public financier of oil, gas and coal projects.

Great example of how to manipulate stats to create an easy bad guy target.

Did they include the USA military and CIA budget used to regularly insure that the governments in oil producing countries contract through USA and EU countries corporations?

Japan secures it's fuel often as a single entity via national purchase.

But place like the USA, Canada, UK all of which produced large quantities of oil via private industry most European countries have previously possessed oil producing countries, which they basically forced to continue permitting their private oil companies to have near exclusive control.

And when those countries excreted independence and tried ending these unequal contracts then suddenly a coup like those we have seen in much of the middle east replacing the government with a western friendly one again and renewing the big oil company contracts.

It is no coincidence ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, BP, Eni and TotalEnergies. are the big oil companies

6 ( +14 / -8 )

Reading the comments I think most here missed the joke!

the world's biggest public financier of oil, gas and coal projects.

Public is where they make Japan the bad guy.

Because the other developed countries have all the major private big oil companies with their previous military insured contracts or lucrative drilling rights in their own country, like the USA, Canada, UK, etc...

Having no oil drilling rights in former colonies, no major source of oil locally, Japan's only option is to make purchasing deals via a single buyer price using the government.

Welcome to facts and reality and a great example of fake news and statistics manipulation to give an incorrect image.

I suspect that this was partially driven by a need to attack Japan for not cutting ties to Russian fuel.

These silly "awards" are meant to do what exactly? I can't think of one country that has altered or would alter their energy production because of this ridiculous label.

4 ( +21 / -17 )

Wait, so these people dressed as dinosaurs and think that so-called “fossil fuels” are the products of fossilized dinosaurs?

They should be wearing dunce caps.

Too silly. Japan remains one of the most energy efficient developed nations......

not with half its nuke reactors shut down it isnt

Subsidies out of date or only targeted at companies aren’t much good to anyone.

I don't live in Minato ward either.

Post a link which is aimed at the private home dweller on a national level-thanks

And after they all go back to their air-conditioned hotel rooms, then fly back home, get their latest gadget or complain about delays in getting the iPhone 14 because their iPhones 13's camera isn't as good. They will then go to H&M or some other fast fashion store buy the lastest fashion wear it once and put it is the charity bin or recycle bin both will end up in landfills because both the charities and recycle can't deal with the overwhelming amount of this junk to the point they are now refusing donations.

But will say it is all the fault of us older generations because we had big cars, yeah we used to drive them everywhere and go to work to buy all the latest Nintendo's, iPhones, etc... My generation my father's generation my grandfather's generation used things until they stopped working and couldn't be fixed anymore.

As a child the children got the B/W TV until it died the the old colour TV until it died after a tube booster was added to extend its life.

Tell a 20 something today they can't have a 40 inch or up 4K or 8K screen/TV and watch them run for anxiety meds.

Another category in which Japan surpasses China.

Have you been to China? The pollution and air quality is horrible in many areas. Japan is extraordinarily clean in comparison.

If you see burning refuse in the city then call your local fire service and tell them there is a fire- they will have to attend.

Chinese American?

Overall fossil fuel financing remains dominated by four U.S. banks — JPMorgan Chase, Citi, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America — who together account for one-quarter of all fossil fuel financing identified over the last six years.

60 largest banks in the world have invested $3.8 trillion in fossil fuels since the Paris Agreement.

The three banks that did the most fossil fuel financing in 2020, according to the report, were JPMorgan Chase at $51.3 billion; Citi at $48.4 billion; and Bank of America at $42.1 billion.

Japan recycles coffins.

Japan does a very good job at gimmicks and PR, especially that aimed at misleading the public. In reality Japan's recycling rates are quite low, lower than the US and most other developed countries.

And it took Fukushima crisis to learn that Japan's renewable energy use is among the lowest of industrialized countries. Around that time, PM Abe had been in India trying to sell coal power plants.

Once again Tokyo-centric, as Japan is Tokyo and nowhere else! Those subsidies dried up all over the place a LONG time ago. Even the buy back from the local utility has gone down dramatically over the past 5 years or so, as the complaint is that the "source" is not stable.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Japan recycles coffins. There are companies offering eco funerals with cardboard coffins. Cremations use a lot of energy and release smoke into the atmosphere. There are cremation methods using less energy.

Cremation requires a lot of natural gas and produces a lot of excess CO². The burning of dental fillings within the cremated remains can also pollute the atmosphere with mercury when the body is cremated.

On average there are 1.5 million cremations every year.

Japanese want to keep some of the important bones.

At the moment we have two urns of bones we need to take to the family grave in Fuji.

Looking up this rifdiculous "Climate Action Network it is clear that the members are Africans that are looking for the free money that the hippy movement promised them to pretend they were "green".

People that squat over a wood fire have no business pointing fingers, especially considering that Japan is extremely careful with fuel usage. As well they have to be, because unlike Kenya and the Congo they don't have huge oil deposits.

There is a difference between financing and investing. I suggest an economics 101 course. By far the financing comes from the commodities markets, which ARE speculators in oil by the millions of barrels in futures contracts. Without oil you have no clothes, no plastics nor cars and no food you don't grow yourself. Just where do you think fertilizer comes from.

Luddites just don't have any idea how many would die if heir unicorn dream of "no fossil fuels" was to fly over the rainbow. If hippies really worried about CO2 they would stop heating with diesel and get some nuclear generation plants built today. That is currently the ONLY proven clean technology extant today. The solar and wind promoters have zero science education.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

We would not be in this energy crisis if these “CLIMATE CHANGE” ORGANIZATIONS had provided an adequate and sustainable alternative to fossil fuel.

So, what can these people show for the BILLIONS AND BILLIONS COLLECTED OVER THE PERIOD OF DECADES??

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Cool! Fossil feuls are the best way towards energy independence, prosperity and yes even creating a greener globe. Glad to see Japan hasn't fallen for the lies of the Paris climate agreement.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Japan won’t buy this stupidity. Mixed energy is the way to go. What is wrong with fossil fuel? It has propelled the world to wealth and progress. Wind and solar is the way to poverty. Energy from batteries flatten mountains and destroy the ecology because of metal mining. Take that award with pride Japan!

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

These leftist climate change activists have no sense at all. Lots of people will freeze to death and die of heat stroke if there is not reliable energy to heat and cool homes.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

LOL!!

Funny how Japanese default behavior is to blame the NGOs, Human Rights organizations, or whatever group that prioritizes people's interests before Keidanren's profits.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

The country’s run by fossils.

Too silly. Japan remains one of the most energy efficient developed nations......

Though the Japanese conserve things like water by using only one bathtub of water for a whole family and heat room by room which are great actions, in many ways they're also wasteful.

Further the article is about Japan still financing a .lot of fossil fuel operations in foreign countries and areas in Africa and Asia. They even sneakily do this through NGO activities. Japan should be financing renewable energy operations not perpetuating fossil fuel.

-5 ( +8 / -13 )

Too funny.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/859266/number-of-coal-power-plants-by-country/

Japan has 91 running coal plants, so at same level of number of coal plants/inhabitant as China !

Germany and Poland are the bad ones in EU.

For a funny fact in 2022, France had closed a coal plant just before war in Ukraine and is putting back on track before end of year again. It will double its energy production by coal, meaning it will become again the second to last coal plant ;)

Moreover Japan loves developing coal plants outside its borders. I know that well because I was involved in that business!

-6 ( +15 / -21 )

Japan was given an infamous "fossil" award by an international environmental group on Wednesday for being the world's biggest public financier of oil, gas and coal projects.

Another category in which Japan surpasses China.

-6 ( +4 / -10 )

Not only that, Japanese Factories, construction businesses, Auto dealers, Auto Repair shops, Recycling centers, Hospitals, Clinics, small businesses even private homes burn their TOXIC, NON TOXIC waste and daily trash as soon as the sun goes down.

Just take a walk outside at night and enjoy the burned plastics and oil fumes, no matter who you complain to NOTHING changes.

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

Oooh burn! Thought they were giving out an award to Japan because the country is run by dinosaurs.

-7 ( +24 / -31 )

Japan is being shamed for their lack of progress-they deserve to be ashamed too!

No real impetus to put wind or solar in place at all.

This week I have run my house purely on solar power.

I am the only house in the street to have solar panels.

Of course, no grant or governmental help is given to place or source panels.

No education given to the masses about the benefits, the cost savings!

Sorry to say it but the government here is worse than useless…

-7 ( +24 / -31 )

Japan is very slow to changes, still promoting gasoline engine cars in the era of EV.

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

Not surpised by people (Japanese for sure) downvoting the truth. fact hurts.

But I don't care that much for the impact on the climate, as a human I adapt very easily.

But on the hypocritical level of politicians, that is another matter.

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

international environmental group

ROTFL, LMAO, BAWAHAHA....That's like saying my lost luggage is an international storage authority.

Do they realise Japan have ample emmison free energy generators using nuclear....nuclear... wind.....nuclear....?

...and they wonder why climate conferences are mostly about carbon offset certificates....

-10 ( +20 / -30 )

LoL, it's too real

-10 ( +9 / -19 )

They are also fossils in the sense that they are absolutely incapable of moving forward. China, on the other hand, is going to be a world leader in green energy while Japan dithers and complains and says “We will make the public understand” why they need to restart coal plants and/or export the ancient tech, or else tratar nuclear plants that by law must be decommissioned. They simply cannot see May other ways.

-10 ( +7 / -17 )

Sorry to say that but indeed Japan is infamous about energy consideration, with total lack of consideration of energy impact on the planet and absence of energy conservation.

It is just because the population does not know central heating in dwellngs that it is not the worse of the worse.

-12 ( +10 / -22 )

Well deserved award! Also, they should be given the dinosaur award for their mindset that is way way way behind the rest of the civilized world.
