Gov't issues false strong quake alert

Wow. That would have made things interesting on day 6 of the Olympics.

Two trains of thought here -

1, better to be safe than sorry

2, the boy who cried wolf

Oedo line delayed for 90 minutes? Wow... that's some incompetent operating there. I'm pretty sure it would've taken them all of 5 minutes to determine nothing was happening.

I start to realize that Japan is better off without high-tech.

Stick to faxes and hankos.

Tv weather news this morning said cloudy changing to sunny. Heavy rain and nobody had umbrellas.

This is not the first time a false warning occured, I recall in 2013 there was a warning in Aichi for a strong earthquake that did not occure.

I remember last time there was a false alert sent a few years back when I was just about to board the Ginza line. The alert said a Shindo 7 was occurring in Tokyo. Surreal feeling. I'm standing there not feeling a thing and just waiting for it all to come tumbling down around me. Freaky stuff.

On day 6 of the Olympics, a false 7.5 magnitude earthquake alarm for Tokyo. That would have sent 10,000 athletes and officials scrambling for safety. Imagine in the middle of a race. It turns out be false alarm. Embarrassing.

I really don’t as the big deal about the falls alarm. I got a bit nervous, pulled over, waited about 2 minutes, then carried on, thinking about what I could have done better.

Should I have undone my seatbelt and gone next to my baby in the back seat? Should I have unbuckled her too? just in case? Pulled over a bit further down the road where there were less power lines?

It was a learning experience.

Definitely not an embarrassment in japan’s behalf. 3 false alarms since 2007? How many mistakes gave you made at work since 2007? Get real people.

it was louder than the typhoon flood alerts.

And then, bracing for something that thankfully never came.

Cry Wolf haha once more, and when the is a real one no one will give a moment of ackowledgment you know why ?

Because the govt the local bodies and any one associated with them are too god damn incompetent to even employ some one competent enough to actually do their friggen job properly.

its almost like the whole thing is just painted on there is no real substance to any of it.

I'd rather have some failures and some successes rather than no successes at all.

The system detects p-waves which race ahead of the ground movements, determining the size of the actual quake from these p-waves is clearly a matter of trial and error.

I'm happy to put up with the infrequent false alarms. Perhaps the next time you're sitting comfortably in your shinkansen seat hurtling along the rails at 300 Km/h - ponder what would happen should not such a system be in place to automatically stop the train in advance of the quake hitting it.

I wish they could localize those main alert similar to how yurekuru does. I turned the one off on my mobile especially since I live across the street from an elementary school. There doesn't need to be a Shindo 5 alert when locally it will be a 2.

No need to blame the false alert! This warning system is for Japan and it’s better to be safe than sorry! A high level earthquake is inevitable so at least this type of system can give people a few seconds to prepare. Be prepared for a 7+ magnitude earthquake at all times if you are residing in Tokyo. It’s part and parcel of life!

At best, embarrassing. At worst, panic and chaos. Still, if a major earthquake comes it's going to be panic and chaos anyway.

I’ve been watching Japan Sinks 2020 the last few days on Netflix. Freaked the hell out of me to hear that alert on all the phones in the house.

Over rated Alarm is better than NO alarm.
