”The GSDF's command structure remained decentralized amid bitter memories of the Imperial Japanese Army's intervention in politics and its role in wartime military aggression, some political experts say.”

GSDF to protect the Japanese remote islets is no more than normal duty. All countries do it, why not Japan.

Self defense and never to invade other country in the name of "political peace" --should be a motto to all Japan.

NK has never attacked or invaded another country.

Yeah it wasn't NK who attacked and invaded SK in the Korean War, it was aliens from outer space, or a false flag operation by America, or robots, or whatever

Fantastic news! I agreed with dcog.More units down south,is a good idea. I would furthermore like more units on the Okinawan Islands, which are under direct threat, as well as a battalion on Senkaku. Also,a few full-fledged aircraft carriers would be a good plan to partol the seas in the area, instead of just converted helicopter ships. But that is a 10-year plan.

Overall,I would like much more spending on Military and much higher numbers of recruits. It is the only way to stand up to Bullies China and North Korea,by force.Even South Korea Army is bigger (but not stronger).

Japan should jack up offensive and defensive capabilities of its SDF and start manufacturing cutting edge weapons systems in association with close strategic partners to overcome tougher security environment and dangers exiting in its neighbourhood.

Good to hear defense policy getting a makeover. These changes sound reasonable and practical

Asia needs to govern itself, no need for yankees.

Asia needs to govern itself? Funny, I thought they already are.

Yep and the only one seeking to change that is the the Communist Party of China.

Interesting that the amphibious forces in Japan are to be put under the army. In the USA they are AFAIU a seperate force in their own right and in the UK have been since 1755 part of the Royal Navy? I wonder if the rational for this is that in the USA they are part of that countries global force projection as indeed in the UK, but Japans constitution prevents such so it will never (at the moment) go outside the borders of the country, so is seen as a natural extension of the SDF ground forces, the amphibious part being merely a form of transport?

Discuss.

@goodlucktoyou, " NK has never attacked or invaded another country"??? You need to review your history. North Korea invaded South Korea on June 25 1950. They committed several acts of terrorism, including blowing up the Korean Air flight 858 in 1987, shelled the South Korean island of Yeonpyeon in 2010 and blew up the South Korean corvette Choenan.

How can you be so blind to facts?

How can they act expediently not being centralized. Shocking news actually.

The government plans to deploy 17 newly acquired U.S.-made V-22 Ospreys at Saga airport in southwestern Japan, with their delivery to Japan expected from around the fall. But the government has not won local consent and is not in a position to push through the plan following a GSDF helicopter crash in Saga Prefecture in February.

Not in a position to push? Why does this sound like so much bull! The government has ZERO problems with pushing things down here in Okinawa, after DECADES of crashes and incidents, but they put on the kid gloves when they talk with mainland communities?

Rather hypocritical if you ask me!

First off, technically the Japanese according to their own constitution, are outlawed from having "offensive" capabilities, which is what amphibious forces are for in the first place. Japan has them because of the potential of having to retake any islands that were or may be taken in a conflict. No need to spend the money on outfitting a fourth branch of the services, plain and simple. Plus putting them on Japanese warships would be seen as a potential offensive threat.

The US amphibious force is the United States Marine Corp, establish in 1775, and was a part of the Department of the Navy for over 200 years, it became it's own "branch" of the US military within the last 30 years or so.

End of discussion.

America needs to go home, and Japan needs to properly atone for its extensive crimes between 1895-1945. Asia needs to govern itself, no need for yankees.

Regional bully is USA @gambare. Most Japanese just want to come home from work and rest. Imperialist right wing hawks like abe et al are a minority. China has one sixth of the worlds population to feed and has been around for 5000 years. NK has never attacked or invaded another country.

@dc. Korea was actually one country.
