Hahaha, happy ending. Neighbors are always neighbors, no matter what.

The Chinese captain outwitted the Japanese....
OssanAmerica
I wouldn't say "outwitted" because this trawler captain has now set a precedent of flight that will lead to more stringent inspection conditions of Chinese vessels in Japan's EEZ from now on.
Insane Wayne
The Japanese made a BIG show of force and were humiliated. They will have to change their strategy and reassert their authority , somehow.
sf2k
so they could put inspectors on the ship but not impound it?
Bugle Boy of Company B
Next time, maybe japan will send a submarine instead of inspectors. Accidents happen.
NZ2011
Akie, neighbors, good ones that is, generally don't essentially kidnap officials from other countries.
Goodlucktoyou
With more people eating fish, and less and less fish, this will happen more often.
Akie
NZ2011, what kidnap ? The Chinese ship did nothing wrong so the guard just let them go. The Chinese ship just drove through the EEZ without any fishing activity. The inspectors just wanted to have some funs, and jumped onto the Chinese ship, hoping that they could get a free ride to Beijing. Hahaha..

Well, I would describe it as being ‘outwitted’ Japan has described the incident as “vicious” which indicates that there is still a nasty taste in some people’s mouth
GW
…..couple questions, how did the officials get ON & then back OFF the poaching vessel I without getting wet, ie chucked overboard for the chasing vessel to rescue …..
Akie
kurisupisu, it is wrong to describe the incident as vicious. Japan and China have long tradition to exchange things and good relationship should be maintained and supported by the govt, through education. I don't know if you know Abe no Nakamaro, who served as the Governor-General of Annam between 761 and 767, residing in Hanoi, Vietnam, then was a part of China. Abe gave his white clothes from Japan to his very famous friend Li Bai, the legendary genius Chinese poet. It is recorded in Li Bai's poem.

Good gosh, the Japanese authorities were downright incompetent.
So, they boarded a ship, but were not in a position to prevent the ship from fleeing?!?!
Reminds of images of an omawari-san on a bicycle trying to chase a suspect who is in a car....
Inspector Clouseau, anyone?!
nandakandamanda
IMHO The biggest problem here, as with previous similar incidents, is that when a Chinese ship is caught doing something illegal under international law within Japanese waters, and tries to escape, the Chinese public will not remain neutral and objective, but will generally support the wrong-doer.
Asakaze
@zones2surf
Yes. How do you imagine "preventing the ship from fleeing"? By throwing a grenade in the engine room, or a hand-to-hand fighting in the trawler's bridge? Only sheer force could stop this ship.
Technically this case can be judged as a kidnapping, and should be treated like one.
tokyo-star
explain what this means? sounds like the chinese vessel high-tailed it out of japanese waters and into international waters, so they could tell the inspectors onboard "dintdo nuffin" ?
zones2surf
@Asakaze,
Um, well, not to disappoint you, but it is rather easy. Sort of like a routine traffic stop.
-- Step away from the controls of the vehicle / boat.
-- Segregate suspects from the controls of the vessell.
-- Place the interceding vessel in front of the vessel being stopped to ensure it can't go anywhere!
Simple, easy!
J-cops are incompetent!!
Asakaze
@zones2surf
Wow, what a great plan. But what should you do if the suspects simply refuse to step away from the controls or "be segregated" from controls? And you are not armed, and the suspects have numerical superiority?
Armchair admirals and generals are very good at making great plans that are rather detached from reality.
baillady
@Akie, from what you write in China neighbors steal what they want and enter others homes and property without invitation! Is that why you came here to get away from bad neighbors?
