Reminds me of the 'weapons of md' from ages past. Like I said before, this isn't Iraq. The stakes are leagues higher. NK will not make a move without a nod from China. Enough with the sabre rattling that only serves to cement abes horrendous leadership.

Simple logic here, let's use it just for this story...

Why would North Korea make such stupid threatening and aggressive statements towards the US and its allies?

What would you do if your neighbour did the same to you and showed you their gun collection and fired off a few rounds every couple of weeks over your house? Would you take action and call the police for help or would you ignore them until it was too late?

2 ( +9 / -7 )

Yawn.

Reality: North Koreans just want to live their lives and aren't going to attack anybody of the blue.

Media Hype: North Korea wants to kill us all, so we need to hold war games on their border and fly nuke armed bombers along their border as a "show of force".

That's an inaccurate statement to make. It's not about the North Koreans, it's about their head of state and what he may do.

@Burning Bush:

Yeah, North Korea isn't going to attack. Jong-un will "back down" from Trump's "Fire and Fury" threat. In the meantime, the UN, Japan and U.S. will quietly appease North Korea and give him what he wants: appeasement, negotiation, treaty and unification under his brutal totalitarian regime.

UN, Japan and U.S. will deserve the aftermath. The people of South Korea will be the unfortunate victims.

How can a country as poor as NK have the money to develop mininukes?

I wish I could say: "NK is not going to start a war, they are not that crazy" but crazier things have happened in the past. Case in point. Orange face becoming president. Let's hope this doesn't escalate.

Media Hype: North Korea wants to kill us all, so we need to hold war games on their border and fly nuke armed bombers along their border as a "show of force".

That's also the Trump hype.

What a pair - Kim and Trump! With ludicrous hairstyles to match.

Who will blink first in a pathetic show where millions stand to die !

This is not how the future of millions of people should be decided........

8 ( +8 / -0 )

Peace in our time appeasement has allowed a despot dictator to develop allegedly 60 nuclear warheads, test the ICBM technology to deliver unimaginable destruction to towns and city on a reputed global scale.

And yet for some it Prime Minister of Japan Shinzō Abe fault, and the Government of Japan, that's Japan with a constitution devoted to pacifism.

Appeasement is the very definition of cowardice,  an utter shameful lack of courage to stand up to tyranny through intimidation.

If military action becomes inevitable the death and destruction that will follow, the total responsibility rests with Pyongyang and those that appeased the North Korean regime.

2 ( +9 / -7 )

Shock&Awe was much better than this Fire & Fury. If Trump wants to use words to match Kim he should have said we'd turn Pyongyang into a Sea of Fire.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Don't make the mistake of believing that China wants to stop North Korea from nuking American bases. If that happens, China will become the major power in the Pacific without having lifted a finger or being retaliated against. Then they will reign in their little lap dog.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

That's an inaccurate statement to make. It's not about the North Koreans, it's about their head of state and what he may do.

Yes, but as long as he is alive, their media will continue to brainwash the people to thinking he is God and the people must protect him at all costs. We are never shown the NK people sitting at home throwing something at the TV in disgust of their leader/country. We only know from the few that escape.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Big Un might be a bit tapped, but I think he has it together well enough to know that he'll be reduced to a puddle of melted fat floating around in a sea of molten glass if he tries to nuke Japan...

2 ( +4 / -2 )

If NK does manage to drop a nuclear weapon somewhere the likely result would be that Pyongyang would be bombed as well. That probably doesn't bother China much, especially, as has been suggested, the target is an American base. But how to prevent NK from doing something stupid - that doesn't seem to be too likely.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

The biggest winners here are Russia and China. America and Trump are being humiliated on a daily basis by NK, and now Russia and China know that Trump is a moron who can be triggered in 2 minutes on Twitter. What you think is going to happen when they start their trolling of Trump?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Gambatte, Non-slim Kim. Anyone who is willing to sacrifice his wife and child has no reasoning ability. The known palaces are the first targets. The rest are obvious. His whole story is fabricated and his threat is a bluff, and USA "military intelligence" and various presidents have fallen for it for decades. Someone suggested here shooting down any future missile launch tests as soon as the missile exits the atmosphere. Unfortunately, the debris will fall on Japan. To use Perry's excuse "oops" probably will start everything, but the Non-slim Kim Regime will be annihilated.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

All options are on the table.....its getting to be a bit of a tired statement really.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Might be kind of wishful thinking but I hope one of the missile tests loses control and ends up in China. Of course without any casualties. Maybe that might make China step up their pressure.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Poor Guam.  what did they ever do to anyone?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Maybe an indication of how serious the threat is, is the fact that JT posted the Pokemon go story directly under the North Korean nuclear threat story.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

I bet Inada Tomomi-san is relieved she ducked out!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Japan's newest white paper on defense, published Tuesday, referred to the possibility that North Korea has already succeeded in miniaturizing a nuclear warhead given that the country has already conducted five nuclear tests.

Looking at the picture posted, seeing how "the possibility that North Korea has already succeeded in miniaturizing a nuclear warhead" turned into "successfully produced a nuclear warhead". Ok that is a real claim but what are the new evidences ? So far, disclosed facts have been NK PR's claims, a picture of the NK leader taken in front of a disco ball and... seismic data, I remember that every planes sent to sniff radioactive radiation after each quake failed to detect anything so I am eager to know what are the so new proof that NK has "successfully produced a nuclear warhead" ?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

I told you guys this would happen! Everyone said that the NK nuclear program was a joke and nothing would come of it. Look at where we're at now, and they seem to have no intention of stopping.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

I am truly sorry marcelito, if your family are of North Korean extraction still resident in the country , the media war could well already be over, negotiation position to sit down and negotiate a final treaty with US and SK has dissipated into nothingness.

What is left is the here and how I am honesty sorry the future could well have been set.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Now NHK says that the NK missiles will fly over over Japan while on their way to Guam.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Ok if JT will allow me let make a number of assumptions, out of the arsenal of 60 nuclear warheads and a half 'n' half first strike mix of targeting capability and  accuracy up to eight Japanese cities  will face varying degrees of harm.

Let's not over or under estimate the devastation. But simply assess without emotional overstatement, that Japan will lose a quarter of its pollution within initial ten days. This could rise to over fifty percent over a three year period.

All dependent on the patriot anti-missile system  being able to knock down one in four from an intensive coordinated submarine and mobile ground launch from North Korea.

I am accounting for a number failures at launch site.

This is the possible cost of appeasement to my family and yes I don't expect to survive I will remain in Kochi.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Pyongyang is not going to desist from its current activities due to strong support it enjoys from its protector China . Now biggest question is what Japan is going to do to strengthen its defenses in face of such aggressive activities or merely keep on raising its grave concern over such actions of North Korea. Japan should keep on increasing its all capabilities to face coming challenges boldly.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

complete nonsense. i'm sorry but you have absolutely no background in nuclear weapons and it seems you have little understanding of ballistics and little understanding of combat itself. your estimate is way, way off.

i wish the media would stop trying to pin this on trump - obama sat around with his thumb stuck somewhere for 8 years while north korea developed missiles and nuclear tech to the point it has reached now. this is not just somehow "trump's fault" - the previous administrations and the UN should have been working on this years ago. i remember taepodong missiles flying off the coast some 8 years ago. trump was not even in the picture. stop blaming him for it, left wingers, you have only yourselves to blame for allowing kim jong un to get to the position he's in now.

paradoxbox, What makes you assume I did, could this not be a independent risk assessment from my companies insurers  to move some forty seven at risk overseas skill placements back to the UK, toot sweet.

Could it not be the forty plus page assessment has a tad more relevance than your thirty four word, well maybe you can expand on your knowledge and understanding of ballistics. yes

First, why NK should be forbidden to have nuclear military capacity ? Pakistan and India and Israel (and Iran) have done the same. Did we nuke them ?

Has Pakistan in particular be in love with America recently ?

Guess why it was not invaded after 9/11.

If you have a gun and tried it in front of public, don't wonder why your neighbour would like the same afterwards.

You need to accept it and stop thinking he is a stupid fool from the start.

Then, the real risk is not be able to steer that risk. Risk is everywhere in nuclearized countries (Fukushima anyone?) .

Stupid that NK leader may be, but not crazy.

Indeed Japan media is turning cameras away from dear Prime Minister asking for more military power himself while the constitution is saying no nuke weapons and no aggressive capacity.

By the way, retaliation to nuke bombing woukd not be nuke bombing.

Killing civilians who are innocent for most of them because you got hit is no solution.

Invasion would be near the right one. Fat boy knows it so he tries to eliminate US bases around.

Think twice everyone.

a 40 page assessment that does what exactly?

if your analysis was even remotely close to the truth, it would be a north korean wet dream.

reality: of nk's total nuclear stockpile, how many warheads are actually going to be viable (fizzled reactions)?

given nk's track record, it's likely that around half of them are going to malfunction

then, how many rockets are going to fail to launch properly? again, probably around half or 1/4.

then how many rockets are going to accurately navigate to their targets? maybe half of those. if we go hypothetical and say NK has developed mirv technology, how many of the warheads are going to release at the correct location to impact their target? again, maybe half or a bit better.

then, if some missiles do manage to find their mark, how many will get through a missile screen? probably a fair number of them will, missile screens are not very good at hitting icbm's.

but then, do you really think a nuclear warhead on the order of 10 or 15KT is going to wipe out the entire city of tokyo even if it hits right in the middle of the city? the sheer amount of concrete is likely to negate much of the blast of a warhead of that size.

your estimates are way too optimistic and if they were even remotely close to being realistic, military action would have been taken by the US and other allies long ago.

NK is dangerous, and there is a threat, but they are not even close to being capable of wiping out the number of people you are estimating. NK should not be underestimated, but ridiculously optimistic casualty figures like in your post are misleading and rely on the assumption that everything will go perfectly for NK but will go wrong for Japan. The reality is likely to be the opposite, considering global nuclear tests by other countries in the past and also considering NK's test track record over the past 15 years.

This nutjob Kim had up until now been disregarded as a nutjob with no nuclear capability.

Its now time to step up to the plate if Kim is mad enough to fire test missiles towards Guam. That would be the time to put this story to bed.

If he does, then take out the missile launch sites and any other sites in North Korea connected to missiles. Take them out immediately and proactively.

Up until now China (and Russia) had to be regarded as potential defenders of any attack on North Korea. If missiles are launched towards Guam then you'll need to disregard them.

Let's say that you do not react to missiles launched towards Guam because of concerns over a Chinese or Russian backlash. Well then you have left yourself at the mercy of a madman who will know that a) he can increase the levels of missile threat, and b) he knows you will not react because of China/ Russia.

Forget that. Take all of the missile sites out with no remorse and then tell the Chinese and Russians to back off.

Unfortunately this is the only way to end this little story.

If you are going to launch a missile strike on a heavily defended island... would you tell everyone about it? Remember the number of times that Seoul was going to be destroyed? Nothing. I think this is all posturing and designed to push Trump's buttons.

Yes, Kim is a lunatic, but I don't think he's stupid enough to risk his own death.

Besides, I'm assuming that Guam has the same anti-missile systems that Japan and South Korea have?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Besides, I'm assuming that Guam has the same anti-missile systems that Japan and South Korea have?

Eerrmm, lets hope Guam DOESN'T have the same anti-missile system that Japan has (does not have). Japan always finds out that a missile has landed in their EEZ, AFTERWARDS. And recent tests on their Patriot system resulted in failures. Not good.

First, why NK should be forbidden to have nuclear military capacity ?

Easy, no Central Bank

Pakistan and India and Israel

Have Central Banks

(and Iran)

No Central Bank, that's why McCain was singing "bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran"

This assessment has been compiled and instituted from a respected insurance company  here in Japan that have a duty of care in accordance with our companies  legal obligation to ensure the safety and well-being of all our staff.

paradoxbox give me a full on technical assessment not your opinion.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

what does an insurance company know about nuclear war?

they inflate their figures so that they can charge higher premiums and/or decline to cover people under threat of nuclear war.

i don't have time to write out a report about this, and i'm frankly not interested in doing it - the research is out there if you have the desire to go out and grab it. studying nuclear war, ballistics and rocketry has been a hobby of mine for the past 20 years and ballistics comes to me like riding a bicycle to most people.

it is a lot harder to hit a target accurately than some random insurance company pulling a CYA thinks it is.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I've notice a drop in the anti-U.S. military protests since the North Korea threats. Even Gov. Onaga has temporarily halted his "get the U.S. out of Okinawa" demands.....at least until this crisis is over.

Now all of a sudden the U.S. military is important for the defense of Japan, Okinawa and the nearby regions and their presence is needed.

So, where are all the anti-U.S. military protesters and peace advocates? How come they're not protesting against North Korea? How come they're not protesting North Korea to stop making threats against peace?

Time to pop that pimple that is NK.
