Glad the chicken at my local store is imported from Brazil and cheaper than the local ones.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe ordered the farm ministry to “promptly take thorough measures for epidemic prevention,”

Well, he's always been good about giving orders...

This bird flu thing is beginning to concern me. It's not limited to only Japan and Asia. Last week, several bird farms in British Columbia were quarantined for the second or third time in the past ten years. Tens of thousands of birds are being destroyed. Makes me wonder how it's transmitted on a global basis. Anyone who thinks it won't happen in other countries has his head in the clouds.

"Makes me wonder how it's transmitted on a global basis. "

Migratory birds is the obvious answer.

A friend in Vancouver, Canada just mentioned earlier today that they have around 5 or 6 farms in the farming valley just east of Vancouver that has been hit hard with the same avian bird flu.

The next link says they have ten farms now quarantined.

http://globalnews.ca/news/1727092/10th-fraser-valley-farm-infected-with-avian-flu/

The link also states he following:

The outbreak of the highly-virulent strain of the flu has prompted several countries or regions, including Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, South Africa and Mexico, to ban poultry products from B.C. and Canada. The U.S. has imposed restrictions on all poultry products from B.C.

I wonder if that's the way it arrived into Japan or if the outbreak here is from somewhere else or 'just happened' right here in Japan? The strain in BC Canada is H5N2. The strain in Japan is claimed to be H5 variety but doesn't state exactly which H5. Would be interesting to see if they can map out where the origin point is/was and how it's spreading.

I better keep a close eye on my 5 hens and cockerel for any symptoms.

here we go again, seems there is some type of outbreak (bird flu, pig flue, mad cow) or food mislabeling scandal every year in Japan. time for JA to stop brainwashing the j public into thinking japanese foods are the safest and deserve a premium price. Time to import SAFER food from countries like Australia and NZ, which use safe feed/grass fed on there livestock and have some of the strictest quarantine practices in the world. has resulted in almost no outbreaks in the last 40yrs. dont know about you but last thing I want to eat is a infected chicken/cow/pig that was culled oops slaughtered and put into the Japanese food chain before the authorities noticed. sound familiar!?

wtfjapan

It is safe since they are culling the infected stock before it hits the market. Can't say the same for the US where they sweep it under the rug and slaughter all whether it be sick or not and places it on the market.
