What planet are these guys living on?
I just can't see how anyone could seriously suggest manually wiping down each and every tree in multiple mangrove forests . . . . . . and then hoping that the tides/currents don't recontaminate the areas you have just been through over and over again.

Hopefully one that works best - post-spill - for this critical ecosystem.

JUST DO SOMETHING JAPAN!
Get on with the cleaning rather than sitting in your comfortable chair twiddling your thumb pondering what to do!

Did you read the article?
"The idea, which was suggested by Japan at a Mauritian government task force meeting in late August, also involves removing any fallen leaves covered in oil. The work would be conducted by a firm entrusted by the island nation and it is up to the Mauritian government to adopt the measure, the source said."
These types of operations don't happen the way you envision them. A foreign country can't simply come waltzing into another country and start doing operations without proper permission and channels, especially one as complex as this one that requires extra planning to prevent further damage. Has absolutely nothing to do with the Japanese government sitting on their chairs and twiddling their thumbs.

Is Koizumi going to be jetting off with a bucket and spade?

They sent a group of 'experts' and this is what they came up with.

This is the responsibility of the company that owned and operated the ship yet not one word about them. Japan proposed?? No, that was some people in the Japanese government. Where were the Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd reps? How many people have they prepared for manually wiping down mangrove trees?

It might help if he could suggest how to make cleaning up spilled oil a little bit sexy.

You cant fill the ocean up with oil as we know the ocean is huge. but how many "young salt" wrecks would be needed inorder to cover the entire ocean in oil. Hope they can clean up the spills before its too late.

Stupid ideas. Who thinks those are solutions?
