Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano says two Chinese vessels entered "Japanese" waters.

Actually, they are disputed waters, not Japanese. This is just like the Chinese saying that the Japanese Coast Guard were operating in Chinese waters.

Actually, if he said that they were disputed waters, he'd be admitting that China had some kind of claim on these islands. Not a good idea if it goes to the courts.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

These islands are disputed from a third party standpoint. They are no where close to the Japanese main islands. Me thinks Taiwan has the strongest claim since the islands are practically next door to Taiwan.

@HolaKitty - I get your point, but proximity to the country claiming rights is not a consideration when it comes to sovereignty. The Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Hawaii and Guam are four examples that spring immediately to mind.

China is shaping up to be the bully of Asia. Japan and other countries (Taiwan, Philippines, etc) need to be firm in their responses.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

should go by what the ultimate authority of the san fransico treaty says. Which would be the united states.

Edano says Japan’s government “strongly” protested to China and reiterated its claim to the islands

I'm just wondering if there is a plan B in amongst this because as i'm sure you are aware the Chinese Govt really doesn't care about how 'strongly' you protest and how many times you have reiterated your claims on the islands.

wah wah those are MY islands! you can't have them. wah wah he sailed his boat near MY islands wah wah. His boat came near MY water... boo hoo hoo

gaijintraveller: "Actually, they are disputed waters, not Japanese."

Yeah, but you see, they like to say everything's Japanese. They claim it's okay to go to Dokdo because they are Japanese lands, then cry when Russian delegates visit the Kuriles or when Chinese approach these islands, as is the case here. And when you point out the hypocrisy the usual answer is just to ignore it, or say, "It's different in this case".

Anyway, cry me a river, Edano. I'm sure you're strong protests will fall on deaf ears in China, just as any Chinese protest would fall on them here.

U.S. warns that China is expanding its maritime power World Aug. 25, 2011 - 04:09AM JST

I have read the above topic along with this. This is very troublesome.

If PRC(and/or Taiwan) really thought they had a case they would have lodged a case to ICJ long time ago considering that Japan declared herself as compulsory to the court.

Well, China's got an aircraft carrier, stealth fighters, anti-aircraft carrier ballistic missiles and millions of infantry, and the US| is folding up, so ain't too much you guys can do about it...

@Olrik, keep talking big............. you do not know what the world is thinking of China. LOL

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Olrik - China has an active aircraft carrier? Active stealth fighter? Active anti-ship ballistic missile? Several years and billions of dollars down the road in my opinion.

China keeps prodding, testing the waters, trying to find out how far it can go before a major incident erupts. At the same time pretending it wants to maintain good relations with Japan, the country that brought it misery but also technology. Democracy will take a little more time.

NO recognition of Japanese law and soverignity in Senkaku islands from China! After the snctions of rare earth last year, the japnese government has learned a lesson!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

If they are disputed island then Japan should keep it's mouth shut and get to cleaning the radiation out of the other sea that they have totally ruined.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I hope Japan does not bow down to China's arrogance as they did last year and actually protect our national interest and our integrity. I would like to see the true test of our U.S. alliance once things get ugly between Japan and China. Why is that both China and Korea do not want to settle our territorial dispute properly in International Court?! Because they would lose...lol..

Next time will be the Chinese aircraft carrier entering that area! See what next the Japanese coast gurad will do!

Pending on how Japan-China island dispute turns out, this incident gives a break on Korea's Dokdo island Issue with Japan.I am U.S.-born Korean citizen and in Seoul, I don't see anyone burning Japanese flag. With Japan-China ties showing signs of deterioration,Korea and Japan should sit down and talk to each other about Dokdo issue.

The problem with China,Korea and Japan is that all those three Asian nations lose rational way of thinking and instead all three nations who harbor strong sense of mutual distrust become overly nationalistic.Japan does need to repair its damaged ties with both Korea and China too.No matter how strong USA-Japan alliance is,Japan ought to learn how to get along with its neighbors.I wish peace to all 3 Asian nations.

****Wondering which country encouraged Japan to bitch about the Chinese boats found in the waters near those islands that Japan claims to own?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

See what next the Japanese coast gurad will do!

Ask the Americans to force it out of Japanese territorial waters - what else?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Uninhabited islands are quite simply spoils of war. My view is that if you can hold them for 50 years they are yours. China has no claim.

Even so, Japan should give them to Taiwan anyway, or, at the very least, put them under U.N. administration to relieve tensions. The core reason Japan hangs on to them is greed. Japan is darned lucky its not divided into Russian, Chinese and American sectors. But they sure don't display the humility they should.

This china's warships are too terrible. GET OUT OFF OUR TERRITORIES! I am happy the Japanese government is standing strong on this issue- and will demand the china warships out of our sea! SENKAKU is JAPAN! Taiwan, china and Koreas can go to hell!

Oracle, but Japan was divided into American zone and Russian zone. Tell you the "fun" never ends....

@NihonRyuAug. 25, 2011 - 06:09PM JST

That is not arrogance. That is economic reasons. China kick of Japan for economic interests. Some month ago NK kill about two chinas in board between China and NK. Now China can't see presence of mind in Japan. Because change of PM that is low power of Japan. China use that.

@NihonRyu, This is not a game or a test, it will be real. That's why we try everything in diplomacy. Rich Chinese class people do not want to go for this, so is Japanse. Both sides have everything to lose.

Major source of friction between Japan and China is not just the island, but natural gas has also been discovered in the Senkaku area overlapping between Japan's EEZ and China's EEZ. Needless to say that they would both like to develop the natural gas fields. Japan is fiercely opposed to Beijing developing the natural gas fields in the area which Japan considers its own and China of course disagrees.

Under the UN's Convention on the Law of the Sea, an EEZ can extend up to 200 nautical miles from a country's shoreline. But the East China Sea between China and Japan is only about 360 nautical miles at its very widest. Japan says the boundary should be the median line between the two countries. China says its EEZ should extend to the edge of its continental shelf, which would put the line almost up against Japan's shores. The UN convention does not give specifics of how overlapping EEZ and continental shelf claims should be resolved. There is no easy solution.

globalwatcher, the northern territories is the Soviet zone. The rest of Japan was the American zone with 1/3 of Okinawa still being the American zone. Looks more and more that China will try and take Japan's territory by force. Their aircraft carrier is just one more sign.

About topic.

NK have a-bomb, but they not game on China side in territorial conflict between Japan and China. That is means what NK is strong geopolitical buffer between Japan and China. I suppose that Japan can understand own interest of strategic security that NK with a-bomb that is strategic necessity for Japan.

@OlrikAug. 27, 2011 - 11:19AM JST

USA also sent help to NK as China. China demand to NK for lose of nuclear program as USA. I suppose that Japan, SK and NK would be economic victims of USA and China. I sure that if NK lose a-bomb then USA and China will more aggressive to Japan and SK. But politics of Japan and SK very emotional and don't worry about own strategic and economics security. Because we can see more conflict situation as on topic.
