Initially this sounds like a gimmick but if the organisers are genuine and it helps raise awareness and understanding of this deeply sad condition, then fair play to them.

If this is so, how come there are so many Japanese suffering from dementia with almost zero help from the government, and who have to rely almost totally on their family "carers", who are often also elderly, but who can't even take days off?

I'm with Tosted Heretic. Thought it was a gimmick, but it sounds quite fun, and I like the stories of interaction. It sounds fun, and good for everyone.

There are care homes for people with dementia, public ones as well. I have visited people at them and they don't really compare negatively to similar institutions abroad.
