Quite ballsy considering my JAL flights from Okinawa are cancelled due to typhoon tomorrow.

Not really, military aircraft don't have to care about turbulence levels for passenger comfort.

Tu-142 range varies between 7000 and 12000 km depending on mission and payload

Russia out to cause even more trouble. Have they not already cause enough?

The planes did not enter Japanese airspace but flew over an area subject to a territorial dispute between Japan and Russia, the official said.

*Since the start of the Ukraine conflict, relations have deteriorated sharply between Japan and Russia, which both claim the Kuril Islands -- known in Japan as the Northern Territories.*

No, it didn't. It flew over UN-recognized territory of the Russian Federation.

The United Nations does not take positions on sovereignty in territorial disputes.

The fascist Russians out to cause more trouble.

Little wonder the entire developed, peace-loving world despises them. Nation of trouble-makers.

Wow!

That's some range.

Did they fly out of Vladivostok?

Putin learn the strategy from his good friend = kimmy. both of them like to show muscle to the neighboring countries, but the whole world know in fact they got nothing in hand at all. just merely paper tiger

Ballsy? Russian?

Two words never used in the same sentence.

Russians are cowards. Always have been. They target and kill innocent people - including many children and women.

elephant200: Russia is practicing her rights of freedom of navigation. With China as a partner working for a peaceful north east Asia

Exactly. I see nothing wrong with this exercise. Russia has been flying bombers a few times every week towards Canada and the US for decades. NATO flies bombers towards Russia all the time too.

Both sides turn around at the recognized national borders, usually being met by interceptor aircraft, but not always.

This is just part of the game. We know you are there. Russian pilots are professionals and they recognize the professionals on the other side. Be certain to wave every time, to keep up foreign relations, if you know what I mean.

I don't think Japan really has to worry about Russia anymore.

They are exhausting themselves militarily in the West. Currently approaching year three of a war that has been very costly for them financially and also in terms of their own national stability. Given another five-ten years of military modernization, Japan will probably be in quite a favorable position for defending it's northern territories. China is a different story, but I honestly think with the direction Russia is heading in, if they try to start something with Japan it may honestly result in a repeat of what happened in the early 20th century.

Did they fly out of Vladivostok?

B-52s fly 36 hour ocean surveillance missions armed with anti-ship missiles, or at least did during the Cold War. It was pretty common for the Soviets to fly those Bears out to the mid Pacific to have a look at our carrier strike groups. Same for the IL-38 May. A lap around Japan is no big deal range wise for one of those.

Not much of a provocation, is it?

If Japan wasn’t a close ally to America then the entire world would have condemned Japan regularly but just because of The US, Japan seems to get a free pass on many issues!

Over such issues as...

If Tokyo needs a nuclear deterrent than Tehran does too.

Iran's opponent is Saudi Arabia. If Iran gets a nuclear deterrent for no gd reason than so does Saudi.

Yawn. Not a provocation, just an exercise. Much ado about nothing.

Awwwww, Puddy Tat is piiiiiiiissssed. Things ain't going so great for him with those UN sanctions kicking him where it counts. And how's that Ukraine war going, huh? He thought it would take a week or two like Tajikistan was. He got a big surprise in this one.

Oh, look, it is your favorite bookmark. Too bad all of the other images on that site, highlight Russia's disgraces around the world.

They are pretending WWII didn't happen and that post 1952 constitutional Japan has rights to territories administered by the Empire of Japan, outside the Home Islands as deemed by the Allies; this is wrong.

Only the Russian believes in land theft for peace and that coups like Russia had in 1993 end treaties.

Should highlight to those that are awake that Japan needs a nuclear deterrent.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Russian aircraft circle country

and a little lower in the article

"The planes did not enter Japanese airspace. The aircraft flew from the sea between Japan and South Korea towards the southern Okinawa region". „They then went northwards over the Pacific Ocean to finish their journey off northern Hokkaido island.“ „The planes did not enter Japanese airspace “

So where is the "circling the country"? Talk about a hysterical headline.

"Japan scrambles jets as Russian aircraft circle country."

War is not a sports game, especially when nukes are involved in the equation. Strive for peace people, stop cheering for pride based wars.

Your JAL flights is not the same as an army plane.

This aggression will not stand.

If Tokyo needs a nuclear deterrent than Tehran does too.

Fairs fair.

@JJE…

Absolutely correct! Japan has a tendency to play the victim card when they themselves are the provocateurs on most occasions! Japan only follows the United Nations and international laws when it suits them otherwise they don’t. If Japan wasn’t a close ally to America then the entire world would have condemned Japan regularly but just because of The US, Japan seems to get a free pass on many issues!

The territorial dispute is only occurring inside Tokyo's head, rent-free.
