Shocked they don't already have this capability. Guess better late than never though.

They need to get with the program fast, why wasn't this done earlier?

Nice announcement in the anniversary of the end of the Pacific War

In coordination with the GSDF's Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade, a Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture-based unit tasked with recapturing islands

Just call them what they are; Japan’s Marine Corps. These guys go to Miramar and MCRD San Diego to train every year.

Electronic warfare and cyberwar are fast becoming a new way to 'wage' war. Japan needs cybertechnology for its defense. Better late than never.

Long overdue as always. It's 2020.

Japan is always playing catch up with neighboring countries. Always taken by surprised by new capabilities from Russia, China and North Korea.

In an actual conflict Japan will be in serious trouble with the current capabilities. More should be done in cyberspace, submarine warfare, drone technology, missile defense shield, protecting space assets like satellites, projecting power at least in East Asia to protect our Islands and territory.

Japan lives in one of the most tense and dangerous places on earth. We always prepare for natural disasters, yet we are half naked when it comes to protecting from agrresive neighbors with historical hate issues to go with it.

To achieve such objectives, the GSDF has adopted the cutting-edge network electronic warfare system dubbed NEWS.

...which won't be news to China or Russia

If minister in charge of cyber security does'nt know how to use a computer, what do you expect.

I don't think it is a good point believing Japan can retaliate to China alone for instance.

No invasion will ever happen to a country with ties close to the USA. Ukraine lacked some for example.

Japan and Germany are doing so well because they had so much financial gains from military heavy investments.

Proning more military improvements is necessary but don't make it a goal or first investment of your country.

Peaceful Japan is so nice the way it is now.

Basically we will pay US and Israeli military companies for them to use their tech on our new systems for their own agenda.

All part of multifaceted modern war fighting. Agree with others above I am surprised they don’t have some capability in this field.

Article 9 severely constrains the country's defensive capabilities. They are always obliged to be one step behind the neighbouring countries. Following the excuse of not altering regional stability. Of not increasing tension and faithfully fulfilling the constitutional mandate of having no offensive capacity.

Japan has to justify itself with hard evidence. That she urgently needs that defensive capability. Consequences of Article 9.

Here's hoping it's not as inept as the other government agencies who can't seem to build out any secure digital infrastructure without passwords being hacked, hard drives being sold, etc.

Another warfare capability ? Where is Japan heading ?

Akie, in the direction of defending its self against the threat and reality of CCP aggression.

..SDF to set up electronic warfare capability unit next spring...

...With the envisaged unit at the Ground Self-Defense Force's Camp Kengun in Kumamoto Prefecture, southwestern Japan....

..The unit will also nullify radio waves transmitted by enemies by sending out other radio waves that have the same frequencies....

...To achieve such objectives, the GSDF has adopted the cutting-edge network electronic warfare system dubbed NEWS....

...The GSDF personnel assigned to the mission will undergo training at its Signal School in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, near Tokyo.....

Gee, thanks a lot mainstream media for announcing to the whole world about when, where and exactly what the JSDF will be doing. I'm sure the enemy will never to try to snoop on these personnel or their equipment.

It is hideously expensive to do it correctly. To jam somebodies radar you have to know basically everything about how it operates. The Chinese and Russians aren't going to hand you their manuals (though sometimes these can be stolen) and especially for naval radars you aren't normally going to find one laying around somewhere where you can examine and test it out (the Israelis captured a couple of brand new Russian air defense batteries during the 1973 war for the US to analyze but you can't count on bonanzas like that to happen every day). That means you have to have very special equipment on aircraft, ships, satellites and on the ground to capture the wave forms of the antenna as it is used in various modes and have people trained to analyze these. That means you fly your EP-3 Aires around Chines warships during and exercise and suck up all the different wave forms out there so your analysts on the ground can sort through then and determine what each radar can do. Or you have ELINT equipment on ships following Chinese or Russian ships during exercises. This often means going places they don't want you to be (international waters but they don't care) and as a result they will harass you , maybe even ram you to get you to go away. Or you have to sneak up on them as they use something knowing if they detect you they will shut down and deny you the ability to analyze their equipment. After all that drama and you have their wave forms you have to develop equipment that can do stuff to those wave forms and I won't get specific about what "stuff" is. Very few nations do serious EW for this reason. It's hard work and every time a perceived adversary introduces a new piece of equipment or makes a change to something already out there you need to smart enough to notice something changed, meaning you have nerdy analysts looking at their stuff in detail every single day and you have reconnaissance teams feeding them with images and wave forms all the time so they can see if something changed.

Next spring? They should've been doing it years ago!

It's frightening how the people who are supposed to be protecting us lag so much behind our enemies...

I know the JMSDF ships have a lot of EW capability but it depends on US made equipment and knowledge. The Japanese ships can do just about everything a US Navy ship can do in terms of defensive EW. In fact one of the things I loved about having the Japanese ships around is you could slot one in to a US Navy strike force and it operated just like another US Navy ship. It was seamless, their crews are superb. But they depended on US equipment and their knowledge of threat systems. That makes sense too as Japan is probably never going to fight solo. They expect to fight alongside US forces with US support, a reasonable assumption. Japan doesn't have an offensive EW capability like the US has but to survive against Chinese forces including their navy they will need develop this. It's not good enough just to be able to spoof the enemy's missiles or aircraft based radars when they are shooting at you. You have to be able to shoot back. The Japanese need to be able to get their own weapons on target, and that means doing things to their ground and ship based systems.
