at a time when tensions are heightened over potential contingencies involving Taiwan.

it has been decades this sentence is included in articles, along with the threat from North Korea.

So technically, no changes regarding the threats in Eastern Asia

I wonder if he's related to Admiral Chuichi Nagumo?

What surprises me about this article is that this hadn't already been done decades ago.

Yes, especially considering how Army-Navy rivalry greatly damaged Japan's efforts during WW2.

Gen. Nagumo's bio-data in Wiki cites an article in the Mainichi Shimbun stating that he is not related to the Admiral.

Ref:『毎日新聞』の報道によると、真珠湾攻撃指揮官の南雲忠一海軍大将は縁戚ではない[8]

This has been a Long Long time in the making..!! Finally!! Now they need to do the same with Intelligence sharing between Services and the Joint Intelligence HQ (JDIH).

Ridiculously overdue, but a significant step to the JSDF turning purple and becoming a functioning counterpart when U.S. Forces Japan upgrades to a joint force headquarters.

Probably, fact that JSDF's busy upgrading and $spending made this org. chart change possible.

It's clear DJT pushing all countries to upgrade their defenses, meaning manpower and $spending.

"It's clear DJT pushing all countries..."

This has nothing to do with DJT. Japan Joint Operations Command has been in planning and development for years.

Japan is not far from becoming a major military power despite its war-renouncing pacifist constitution. Article 9 of the constitution is a gem that every country of the world should emulate and practice.

Why doesn't the Japanese government make efforts to attain that goal rather than trying to become a mediocre country with large armed forces?

A puppet military serving for a foreign occupying forces!

Typical pro-CCP nonsense.

Japan is not under occupation, by the US or anyone else, and its military is not a "puppet."

The US military is here at the request of the Japanese government, and if the government asks the US to leave, it will. Just like it left the Philippines in 1991.

Yes, maybe nice to have, but there are also disadvantages like an additional bureaucratic administrative overhead, more costs, more potential for communication and military orders confusion etc and of course regarding any potential conflict it doesn't increase real physical defense capabilities as it is only a pure office based paper, stamp and fax tiger.

This policy seemingly has risk to weaken civilian control.

"It's clear DJT pushing all countries...

The reality is it is Xi Jinping that is pushing Asian nations to increase their military power.
