ROFL japan love to over exaggerate. For al the citiznes in Japan living dont stop your heaters. Stay warm and F the LDP for lame statements. Japan is not suffering Like Ukraine with electricity......

That 2000-3000 yen a month will come in handy to buy a few family packs of kairo to have around the house.

Tbe train stations I have just been through have put their escalators 'Out of Service due to Winter Energy Saving Mode'.

The elderly I saw going to use them, didn't look too impressed when they realised tvey had to walk up the stairs.

The trains have also seemingly have turned off their heaters or not yet turned on.

Perhaps these will be switched on at certain times or temperatures?

Oh there isn’t much sunlight in winter. And the wind isn’t blowing. Look at the dead birds at the wind farms. What about all these mountain of metal panels? Where will we throw them? Thanks but no thanks to you Midori energy!

unleash Japan’s mix and nuclear energy!

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Why should I save when the government has done nothing but sit on their hands knowing problems were coming for the last 10 years. Stopped cheaper nuclear power, then kept letting the plants fail their safety inspections, then are surprised when they would be a good solution to the crunch. Knowing there will be a supply crunch allowing the companies to charge 20-45% more while also being in an economic downturn…

if things are going to be this bad at least let my butt not be cold

The major problem is the two different power grids. How can anyone of thought that would have worked out? Two grids and two power frequencies.

If there was one smart grid it would have coped better than now. Daily consumption is hitting 97% capacity. That is the absolute limit.

But it is only Tokyo which is hitting 97%. Other parts of the not. West Japan is the region with operating reactors. None in East Japan.

Probably the TEPCO Niigata NPP should be restarted to deal with the demand.

More renewable energy to 30%.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

A completely engineered crisis. Dollars to donuts that the people who tell the plebs to cut back on power use won't be doing the same, whether its in Japan or elsewhere.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Over decade from Fukushima nuclear disaster, Japan had enough years to increase other new energy.

But LDP government who want to cling to superannuated nuclear plants intentionally delayed to popularize renewable energy.

Largest cause of power supply crunch is government themselves.

They try to compensate their misstep with nuclear plants.

no savings here, will use as usual.

Went through Bunkyo-Ku last night on my way home from the Hospital.

The hospital has cut all unnecessary lighting etc..

But Bunkyo-Ku streets all had "Christmas" lights on in full display.

Now I am not talking about private businesses, I am talking about on the city lamppost, shotengais, etc...

Seems someone didn't get the memo.

We always conserve energy, not for heating and cooling though, at least not while the government continues to waste energy.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Building homes made from plywood with massive single glazed floor to ceiling windows is part of the problem. Properly insulated homes, double glazing etc is the foundation on which energy conservation is built.

Why do people have a problem with plywood? It's an extremely strong material. The houses that collapse in earthquakes are the ones without plywood. The strength of a 2x6 or 2x8 house (in Canada etc) is mostly from the plywood sheathing.

Central heating is better. I love being able to wake up, pull the covers off, and walk to the toilet without freezing my niblets off any step of the way. Nice and cozy 24C (75F).

As people in the UK are now discovering, central heating is extremely expensive to run unless you have an unlimited supply of cheap gas. If you insulate a house properly, you do not need expensive heating equipment like central heating, underfloor heating, a woodstove, or whatever is trendy. Only bad houses need a radiator or other heater in every room. Two air cons should be enough to heat 100 sq m.

Japan is becoming a developing country.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

Hypocritical aye? First get rid of all that xmas lamination lights and xmas trees in every train station and department store and all panchiko palaors before you think about begging us to cut down on electricity to keep warm. We are not living in Ukraine!! This is Japan. Stop trying to simulate what Ukraine is going through Japan. Fire up your nuclear plants and your act together.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

We have been buying energy from dictators for decades and will continue to do so, as the Middle East is hardly democratic. If they didn't like the invasion of Ukraine, they should have paid someone to bump off Putin. Cheap, fast and effective.

If our politicians wanted to be self-sufficient in energy, they should have spent the last 20 years building green energy infrastructure. They failed to do that.

Governments should stop making us suffer for their failures. If your lights go out, vote your government out.

@Nihon Tora

"sign just went up proudly declaring that the seat heater had been switched off for the SDGs.”

Seriously? How much electricity does a heated toilet seat use? It can't be much. Once I got a heated toilet seat, I can't live without it during winter now. Now, the cold toilet seat is a shock to my system that my body can't take. Lol.

American need money for their heating , American need should be the priority

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

How much is the average electric bill in American dollar,I hear 50 dollars

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Building homes made from plywood with massive single glazed floor to ceiling windows is part of the problem. Properly insulated homes, double glazing etc is the foundation on which energy conservation is built.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Tora, Japanese do not have a highly developed energy system, most Americans new built houses are all electric

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

Yep, society continues its slow but steady decline. And this is in a so called "highly" developed country. Gear up people and put on another sweater. Winter is coming.

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

When the politicos start wearing coats in the Gikai then I might consider buying into this eco-charade!

1 ( +4 / -3 )

OK people, we can say or complain about what we won't do about cutting down on energy use, but those who control the switch, can FLIP it off at anytime. Now what what?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Literally zillions lights at illumination locations now in full swing across Japan. Just returned from one in local Osaka. Xmas trees and lights blazing until 10pm and barely a soul there.

Yrral-san, kerosene is no more toxic than burning wood in a fireplace, especially if the kerosene burner is one with a vent like mine. It gives some smell when it is first ignited, which I drive out by opening windows for a minute -- but otherwise is quite clean. I leave the heater on all winter and so the bad small is experienced only once a winter. Most homes in smaller Japanese towns are warmed by kerosene heaters.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Kerosene is toxic to be burn indoors

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Suggestions: if you use the laptop or PC at night a lot, try use an LED light -- 110 yen at Daiso with variable brightness -- that inserts into the USB socket to light up the keyboard, and then turn off all room lights. I have been doing this for several years and it really saves money and soothes the eyes. I don't use electricity to do room heating but, rather, kerosene. I set the thermostat to 10 degrees and work in my loft, where the temperature reaches 15-16 degrees at night. When i sleep, I use an electric bed warmer under me so I don't have to turn the kerosene heater higher and that avoids making the air getting too dry for my skin and nose. Have been doing this for four years. Cheers!

By mid January the headline I’ll be hundreds of elderly frozen too death. Honestly hope no one dies as a result of this Governments actions.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

How many houses could the massive advertisement screens in Shibuya power?

How many lives could be saved by turning those off?

Oh, money, I see, ok, let people die then. Companies can waste as much power as they want because money, but the people have to turn off their heating. Really lets you know how important people are to the government.

10 ( +12 / -2 )

Wait till Russian cut Japanese off in a few weeks,we burn more fuel as watse than some countries consume

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

as long as they dont increase the price of electricity, nobody cooperate.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

At our office I’ve noticed that now it’s winter, the toilet seat is freezing cold - a sign just went up proudly declaring that the seat heater had been switched off for the SDGs. Meanwhile the automatic flush system remains in operation - it needlessly flushes when you walk into the cubicle before you’ve done anything, flushes again when you sit down, flushes again at random intervals when you are doing your stuff and then flushes once or twice more when you reach to wipe your backside. Then when you are done and want to flush, you put your hand over the sensor to make it flush and it refuses to flush.

9 ( +12 / -3 )

They can shove it. I’ll start power saving when pachinko parlors and scrolling neon billboards stop wasting electricity.

9 ( +16 / -7 )

Our streets lights are very few. Every couple of hundred meters.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Great! We can all pretend we are living in Ukraine for a couple of hours a day.

Maybe you could go and try living in Ukraine for a couple days, see if you're still so strongly behind what the russians are doing there.

-8 ( +7 / -15 )

And to think that this is only one nursery school which got busted.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

are we we going to copy DPRK style?

I will start to save energy as soon as pachinko will close down at evening, all ads will be turned off so they will set a good example.

as this will never happen as client who pays electricity bills every month in time I will use electricity as usual.will enjoy warm bright room and no extra savings as we enjoy life in 3rd worlds biggest eceonomy/JT narrative from yesterdays article/...

boycott your savings dear LDP crooks...

2 ( +9 / -7 )

Worth a go I guess.

The government plans to award points, equivalent to around 2,000 yen, to all households that register for the conservation program. Those which cut monthly electricity consumption by 3 percent or more compared with the previous year in three billing cycles from New Year's Day will be given additional points worth around 1,000 yen each month.

Hard to do japanese culture where they never ingrained the economically and ecologically friendly habit of last-one-out-turns-the-lights-off concept like they did back in the 70s in America.

-5 ( +6 / -11 )

Yeah and next year the utility down here has already announced it is raising rates by a bit over 39% per household.

We just changed power companies for a massive discount. Now is the time to start looking for a new supplier.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Don't worry everyone!

There lots of solar panels all over Japan.

We're gonna be just fine!

-3 ( +12 / -15 )

Luis David Yanez

are you going to go door-to-door asking if people were against nuclear energy. The problems of the nuclear industry have all been created entirely by themselves.

-1 ( +11 / -12 )

What is happening about the 20% government subsidies for power and gas from Jan-Sept?

9 ( +12 / -3 )

The energy shortages is really becoming real especially with the impending winter. It is going to be a tough winter for many countries. Not liking the aggressive worldwide green policies. It would be better to just slowly ween off of fossil fuels as new renewable energy technologies are created.

3 ( +11 / -8 )

They should turn off the lights of people who are against nuclear power since they have been partially responsible not only for the constantly rising costs of electricity since 2011, but also for the Hokkaido Blackout, and the current energy crisis in Japan.

-4 ( +16 / -20 )

you can try to turn down the thermostat all you want, but if there is a middle aged OL at the office, you will never win.

12 ( +19 / -7 )

The uninsulated houses of the rich of Japan.

hahaha.
