showing the drug's effectiveness in nearly 70 percent of 53 coronavirus patients with severe symptoms, while it caused serious side-effects, such as deterioration of kidney function, in a quarter of them.

"We are currently conducting clinical tests and are focused on confirming the drug's efficacy and safety."

Japan, late again! This has ALREADY been proven NOT to work! Also, it causes SEROUS life altering damage! And I bet the doctors wouldn’t even discuss the side effects with the patient as is the case 100% of the time in my experience.

what are you thinking japan!

Tell that to someone who can barely breathe and is dying of this disease. I am sure many would accept kidney damage or even losing a kidney in order to survive.

I would also trust the New England Journal of Medicine before I would trust a British daily newspaper, called the Guardian.

@thatperson

Have you ever contracted influenza Type A or B ? the doctors go through all allergies and dose based on age and body health condition for side effects. You can also opt out of medication, When I went after 3 days of fever they did not bother to give me influenza medication. Trust in the experts and see the positive side.

""Avigan, also known as favipiravir. As it is feared to cause birth defects, it cannot be administered to expecting mothers or those who may become pregnant.""

Here we go again, I knew this is all gonna come down really down to our Pants.

Zip Your Pants Boys & Girls, This is NOT a time to get pregnant, I say Keep 3 or 4 Packs of condoms handy before they sell out like toilet papers, now why do I have the feelings some freaks on Amazon, Yahoo, and other E commerce giants are going to try to make a $ out of this story.

"Hey, that person"

That has been my experience 100% of the times too, my doctor just NODS every time I open my mouth.

It is always a one line of communication starting and ending with the doctor.

Remember, someone has to keep the economy going when this is all over, the more failed kidneys the better i guess.

My doctors talk a lot. Too bad I cannot grab all the vocabulary.

Good luck with this dangerous drug.

A draft, withdrawn by WHO, is quoted by The Guardian. The New England Journal of Medicine published a study showing improvement among patients with severe symptoms of SARSCoV-2, especially individuals on ventilators. A study in JAMA concluded that almost 90% of patients on ventilators with the virus expired. Any means that offsets that figure is certainly more than a matter of statistics. Slightly unhinged individuals quoting a withdrawn study, quoted by a rag that misrepresents fact is not exactly insightful or in any manner associated with the science of medicine. And certainly experiences with your personal physician offers insight into medical science. A run on condoms, that's keen. The more failed kidneys the better. Those observations are simply meaningless and indeed daft.

@deepk

Since I don’t get the flu much, you’re post was great and eye opening...., until you said:

Trust in the experts and see the positive side.

And after having a baby in japan, my response is NO WAY!!!!!

When I asked my doctor about the success rate of a certain procedure in terms of pain management, good reply was : “I have no idea because Japanese people don’t complain”.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Richard Gallagher...you are absolutely correct...it appears that they are trying to treat ARDS when the symptoms have not presented as such (yet....or ever), so the ventillators may be causing more damage.

Found the above article also in Japanese, so the local medical community definitely knows that this could be a problem.

all drugs have side effects

it is good to have it around, why not ? . when avigan makes more sense avigan, when it is too late for use remdesivir.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

one other thing I would like to suggest japanese doctors should do during the pandemic. is to use antibiotics too. And like with all covid19 patients ! bacteria related illness could also be an underlying condition for complications

The Japanese government makes its decision based on watching World New Reports like trump watching FOXNEWS in the morning until 2-3PM then have a press conference in the evening.

This is another example of the failing Japanese education system because if their English was better that could have learned that it doesn't work, and it has some serious side effects.

This is the first time in 10 yeas that I'm posting a message on this page, but I can't let people die due to ignorance and pharmaceutical lobbyists. Remdesivir is a DISASTER. Did you read : it creates deterioration of kidney function, in a quarter of people treated. We're not talking about 1% but about 25% of people. The study of The New England Journal of Medicine recently published was made on ONLY 53 PEOPLE. How can you even call it a "study". Before any drug could be put on the market, it should be tested on thousands of people, not on 53 people. It's a gigantic joke (but unfortunately it's not funny as it will lead to people's death and permanent health damages). This study in the New England Journal of Medicine is just the result of the U.S. biopharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences Inc. lobbying. And to add that this drug (with completely unproven results except on ONLY 53 people selected by Gilead is pretty expensive compare to other treatments currently tested. The currently only way to cure efficiently the Covid 19 is to treat it from the first symptoms showing up. With just hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin IF PUT TOGETHER AND AT THE BEGINNING OF THE INFECTION, we reach only 0,5% death on studies of a thousand people. This treatment is very cheap and effective. Don't let "big pharma" brainwash people and share this widely.

"...while it caused serious side-effects, such as deterioration of kidney function, in a quarter of them."

Once again rushing through a drug that has not had adequate testing, and even then has proven to have very serious and IMMEDIATE side effects in a quarter of patients -- side effects that they probably will not recover from. And by "rushing through" I mean at a Japan pace; if I'm not mistaken this drug was already declared useless in treating Corona. Does Abe owe someone some favors? Pressure from the drug-pusher Trump, perhaps?

Company hopeful, perhaps because they bribed the right officials...

If the only problem with Avigan is that it can result in birth defeats, I don't see that as a problem since women of that age are very unlikely to suffer from severe Covid-19 symptoms.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Doesn’t work, and the side effects are horrendous.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

A study in JAMA concluded that almost 90% of patients on ventilators with the virus expired.

However, 80% of people who go on ventilators for other conditionals die. By the tie you get to that stage, your odds are pretty short.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

No need - Clorox Chewables are far more effective.

Please, nobody tell Trump.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

OK. Let's look at the facts here.

Gilead Sciences, a US Company, is behind this drug.

They previously tried pushing it as a cure for Ebola, but didn't make progress.

Now they're pushing the same drug as a potential cure for Covid-19 ...

OK. Now the troubling thing here, is that the tests are/were being carried out in China.

China is a very untrustworthy state - particularly when it comes to Statistics.

China has also patented recently their own drug cure for Covid-19.

Make up your own minds...

The Good news is, that there's many other locations seeking to develop their own vaccines.

For example:

http://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2020-04-23-oxford-covid-19-vaccine-begins-human-trial-stage

But the annoying thing with this, is that India gets the right to make it!

https://www.businessinsider.com/india-serum-institute-millions-oxford-university-vaccine-before-approval-2020-4

At what cost to future pricing ? (Political interference?)

I recommend to watch and understand something about covid19 :

https://vimeo.com/412481785

Fight against death (cytokine storm).

If you don't reach that stage, you'll survive with little or none health consequences.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Approval or disapproval will be based on the results of the ongoing clinical trial. If it's effective it may be approved. If not, it shouldn't be.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

The reporting that "90% of patients on ventilators expired" is flawed. The denominator is incorrect and didn't count the people still on ventilators and their outcome is unknown.

It's also incorrect that survivors of severe symptoms have little health consequences. Damage to the kidneys, brain and heart are significant and life expectancy will drop as if the patient is suffering from coronary heart disease.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

OK, let’s all settle down here. We do know is that this drug definitely has some positive effects with patients with COVID-19. And yes, the 25% that had kidney problems is definitely concerning. But you know what I didn’t see in that article? Anything on those patients being forced to take the drug in question. So long as that’s the case, and so long as the patients are fully informed as to the possible side effects, I say go for it with this drug.

I mean even severe kidney problems, it’s sure as hell better than dying from the coronavirus, I can tell you that much.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

@Jcosplay

that’s all fine and dandy if you’re lucky enough to get that rare doctor in Japan that will properly inform you. Most of them go by the motto,

”I’m the Doctor, so you do as I say and don’t ask questions because I know best”
