Japan to back international efforts to regulate AI-equipped 'killer robots'

Goodness. Certainly not the lead image I was expecting when I opened Japan Today this afternoon.

I love the image. Works perfectly if you are trying to scare someone into understanding what would happen without regulations in this particular area.

I don't think you can stop the eventual use of AI weapons. That is why regulation is important.

How is the United Nations going to ban Artificial Intelligence weaponry when it can't ban low intelligence leadership.

It is kind of scary that we even need to consider something like this.

We have been using robots in one form or another for decades. They formed a key part of Japan's manufacturing success. Throwing this out because of fears about science fiction killer robots is ridiculous.

Strange to be reading this kind of news. If governments are this concerned that might mean the technology has advanced further than us average Taros think.

Japan is living in a dream if it thinks it has advanced robots. Honda's Asimo was terminated because it looked stupid compared to the Boston robotics robots (quote!)

Generally, we see little movement in the list of the "Worlds 10 Worst Problems" as counted down from least to most crucial. Growing concerns over the angst between several countries with nuclear bombs has a great deal to do with moving "Weapons of war and mass destruction" into first place.

"Weapons of war and mass destruction" not only includes nuclear bombs and chemical weapons but drones and the killer robots now being developed. One big mistake or going down the wrong path in developing new weapons could change life as we know it and a major problem with these weapons is who controls them.

Today many governments are become more totalitarian and Orwellian which means they may eventually be used to control populations. Killer robots are now just another part of the new arms race. The article below delves into the current list of the worlds 10 worst problems.

The point is.....don't dehumanize killing!!!! Anymore than it already is! I mean, some pilots being interviewed said it seemed like no more than a video game. But still they had a sense of what they had done.....killing with drones and robots.....removes the human part of it even further! That, in my opinion makes it worse!!!

I prefer 100 peaceful robots than 1 Trump terminator.

Darn... thought we were going to hear more about the upcoming Terminator movie. Oh well, maybe this was intended to be about the real life Terminator experience. In any case, how is Japan going to stand behind this when they have no idea what "AI" actually is? They think Siri is AI and misuse the term all the time to just talk about smart programming and robots in general. I mean, maybe it's not surprising, but still.

"Killer Robots" makes the topic sound silly. But smart weapons that are lethal and difficult to disable are surely within the realm of possibility right now. I think regulation is a necessary first step to acknowledge the risk of such weapons and, hopefully, think about some contingencies.

Japan. Unless the US, China, EU and Russia signs the agreement as well it's only another way you will be left behind when it comes to defense.

Hypocrisy is at its best. As long as Japan doesn't change its pro-nuclear war weapon policy, the rest is simply a joke.
