People will just find another spot for these kinds of photos. Hopefully it'll stop being national news soon.

When will Japanese realise foreigners won't be following all their endless "rules"?
And in a few years, when the boom is over, they will be begging them to come back.

The only 'anti-tourism' there should be should be by the labor force forced by the LDP/BOJ financial policies to deal with this influx powered by the weak yen for minimum wages.
While only the propertied classes see any gains from the tourism boom.
It is really no way to run the former Number Two economy in the world, former industrial manufacturing powerhouse, and a nation which once had enviable broad-based prosperity.
But it benefits a few at the top, and may continue for those reasons.
Along with petty demonization of unruly foreign tourists to distract the masses.

But more money, Central Govt love it but local Govt doesn't like Tourist attitude.

And people will find a way to get around that. Give it time.

Anyone remember "Christo ", a European post modernist artist whose claim to fame was engulfing various buildings {eg. Eifel Tower } , coastal sea scapes {part of Sydney Harbour } and even the German Parliament '
with the type of material being used to block Fuji.
I can see his greatest work, one that will stand the test of time and be a monument to all that post modernism means.........COVER ALL OF MOUNT FUJI !!!
Bring on Christo....the greatest artist the modern world has to offer.

Japanese can be such cry babies. Find a better solution for locals and tourists.

They are sending the wrong message to the foreign tourists.

Anti—tourist fence!
Love it guys. Very dramatic. ;p #chuckles. That’ll rally the troupes!
Finally someone with the right attitude. Cash in smart people! It’s an opportunity. Sell sushi tacos or something. You’ll make an absolute fortune.
Meiyouwenti
Buy some picture postcards of Mt Fuji to appreciate the beauty of the iconic mountain rather than coming all the way to end up annoying the local people.
koiwaicoffee
I know that locals may be right, but there should be betters ways to handle the issue.
This sounds just wrong, but very Japan at the same time.
stormcrow
People will find other ways.
They’re going to have to throw a blanket over the whole damn mountain to stop it.
kohakuebisu
Nice photo. I forgot about Fuji having an eye like the Death Star.
They should get Darth Stagram to focus a laser out of it and zap the tourists in the middle of the road.

Tourists pay for these packages (includes both fenced places) and want to make the most of the money spent.
I have seen dozens of busses pull up, Regulate tour operators ? then the public transport will be overwhelmed.
GBR48
Is this Japan's version of 'stopping the small boats'? Remember always reading the line 'from here, on a clear day, you can see Mt. Fuji' (applied to almost anywhere within 200km of it)? They will be replacing it with: 'you absolutely must not attempt to see Mt. Fuji from here'.
Just-honest
""Japan to build Anti-Tourist Wall around Japan"

Why not just Barricade the whole of Mt Fuji? Good Solution to these unruly foreigners bringing in trillions and trillions of dollars.
Shadows of the Rising Sun
I don't get it about both of these places: if many people are jaywalking, they clearly need access to the other side of the road at that point, so do the obvious thing and build a crosswalk to facilitate that need safely. Why are they trying to prevent what people want and need to do in an area?
Lindsay
What’s next? They put a levy on anyone who looks at Mt. Fuji?
Daninthepan
Just put a sign on the bridge that says "It's inconsiderate to take pictures if you are annoying local people" big enough to be visible in the desired photo. (Same for the convenience store place).
WoodyLee
Let me just guess where this is all coming from, it is going to take another 50 to 75 years for some to adjust to the new reality, in the past Japanese tourists flocked Disneyland, N Y City, Paris, Italy, Spain, and most of all Hawaii were locals lost land, jobs and business due to migration and NO ONE put up Fences and Walls.
Peter Neil
if i owned the conbini, i'd build an observation deck on the roof with drinks and snacks to buy. 200 yen for a perfect photo.
WoodyLee
Got an idea, how about building a Mount Fuji Like mountain in the middle of No Where !? no one will notice then watch tour businesses scream and yell .
WoodyLee
"Maybe we can build a sightseeing course" instead to encourage more considerate exploration, he added.
Good Idea.
garypen
Why not put anti-tourist fences at the airports, at this rate.
WasabiWit
I suspect that the locals are simply indirectly trying to discourage the influx of foreign tourists. They complain about jaywalking and installing measures to make the areas less appealing, hoping this will reduce the number of visitors.

Basically those who directly benefit from tourism (government , hotels, restaurants ) love it, person who do not benefit directly and are bothered by it don’t. This is common sense. Won’t you complain if there was a tourist spot in front of your house with a lot of noisy and poorly behaved people?
Makoto Shimizu
It is insane to not turn into a profitable business a good point of view for picture taking by tourists!

What ever you're on make mine a double. Tourists anywhere ate brainless rude self absorbed muppets who have zero respect for anyone but themselves. The behaviour is the same world over.

The management dealing with "tourism" needs smart planning PR, carefully thought through.
"Anti-tourist fence", can quickly, I suggest morph into "Anti-foreigner fence", with all the toxic negative overtone
itsonlyrocknroll
Tourism industry represents a huge boost to J economy. "don't look a gift horse in the mouth"
The hospitably industry/sector is essential to many communities reliant on tourism.
Erecting fences instead of investing in smart "crowd control" sends out a message that visitors are an unwelcome nuisance.

Japan - do they want tourists or not?
Accomodate the tourists. Build a parking lot (which I think they did), make a little crosswalk to the center divider and put a up a few coffee and snack stands nearby.
Make money and make the tourists feel welcomed.
Everyone's happy. Or has Japan forgotten how to be happy?
owzer
Can we just cover Mt. Fuji with a giant blue sheet already?
WasabiWit
It seems like a strange reaction and other tourist nations would not usually try to control tourists' movement unless it caused some real damage (e.g., Machu Pichu).
Japan is still relatively new to having itself as a massive tourist draw - it's a learning curve.
Open-minded
The J- government has been arguing that the weak yen is a benefit after the pandemic. It is always bragging about bringing a very insignificant amount of revenue through tourism and the increase in exports.
All it has done is make the residence not like tourist and foreigners in general, fewer foreigners coming to work in Japan, an increase in wealthy foreigners purchasing real estate, a decrease in the Japanese birthrate, pensions being cut or reduced, increase in taxes, and overall standard of living falling.
Another example of be careful about what you wish for. Thanks J-government for running the country into the ground.
daito_hak
Instead of coming up with a civilized and rational solutions, they just use primitive thinking and come up with primitive solutions. Just blaming the tourists is just primitive. Tourists do what they’re supposed to do. Taking photos everywhere. We had the same problem with the Japanese in my country when they used to be the mass tourists.
Is that hard to think about building viewing spots with secured surroundings? I guarantee you that people will go then to those spots. Japanese wanted tourists but they don’t do anything to accommodate them but complain and turn xenophobic. This is similar to the transportation problems in Kyoto. Their behavior is silly really.
Shadows of the Rising Sun
No, you are talking about a small minority that makes headlines or the large package tour groups.
Tourists in large groups are the worst, as they tend to be in a bubble and feel less personally responsible for the group's behaviour.
I recall that the Japanese tourists in New Zealand were considered the worst decades ago.
They always travelled in groups, were loud, spat on the ground, and took photos of people in their private homes and lives. They were considered rude and obnoxious - hard to believe today I know.
They are generally not like that anymore, but now the Chinese tourists tend to be like that.
DanteKH
Not sure why any one expected something less. This is Japan, where tourists money are most welcome, but not the tourists, which are the nr 1 nuisance of this country.
lordoflys
Japanese officials only react when voters complain. Most of the locals in the area do not benefit from tourism so they just complain about tourists taking photos in the road. There is a simpler solution than just erecting a giant wall to block out Fuji-san. How about making a tourist platform where they can safely take their photos?
dan
Just get Godzilla to destroy the whole mountain ...problem solved.
UChosePoorly
I will be going to Japan this summer to sell step-ladders at these spots.
Mr Goodman
Geeze japan what's all the fuss.
Can't manage the tourist without putting barriers up all over the place ?
Ridiculous !
Mike_Oxlong
I've read no evidence that it's foreign tourists. Domestic tourism is huge in Japan. It's always mainland Japan tourists causing problems in Okinawa. It's certainly the case around Mount Fuji as well. Look inwards Japan.
Roten
The 1.8 meter high fence is a far cry from the viewblocking black barrier. Why not make local revenue by fining illegal parking and jaywali/king? That would pay for at least part of an extended walkway so pedestrians are lnot running across the road.
WA4TKG
Pass, never been closer than 100 miles away, that’s close enough
opheliajadefeldt
I have never understood why people flock to these places to look at high mountains. My awe has never been inspired by such places, I prefer rolling hills and pastures to see, but woud not travel travel thousands of miles to do so. In the little county where I live with my girlfriend in the UK, there are many places like this, along with narrow winding roads.
masterblaster
How about just building a giant wall around Mt. Fuji?
diagonalslip
exactly what came to mind Mick.... Christo's departed this realm however.
'they' could always follow their mantra of "if in doubt lay concrete" and surround the entire mountain with concrete barriers as per Fukushima..... stymie those pesky tourists whilst supplying plenty of pork for the usual suspects! (^_-)
James Hendershot
It seems like they are wasting an economic opportunity. People with money want to come to your neighborhood to look at something? I can think of a dozen ideas to make money for the locals off this boom. Tea stand, Rooftop views with a charge, Food truck, Minpaku, professional photographer, etc etc. But they'd rather scorn their good fortune. Must be living so comfortably.
Entuojo
Interesting. Thanks for sharing.
kohakuebisu
What kind of profitable business can be built on a five meter wide strip in the middle of a flyover bridge?
Like the Lawsons, presumably part of the appeal will be that you don't have to pay.
Negative Nancy
The headline suggests the whole country is responsible for this, which is untrue. Actually, it is a small but vocal minority who are put out, who manage to make the headlines with their complaints every day. This year's hot topic is the so-called burden of inbound tourism. It's a nice stance that people can get behind.
WA4TKG
“Yes, we want your money, now “Go Home”
Mirchy
As someone mentioned, it would be better to turn this tourist obsession into an economic benefit. Photography points should be precisely defined with all the necessary infrastructure, and in places where the crowd of tourists is disturbing, gathering and staying should be prohibited. If you break the rules, you pay a fine. Double inflow of financial resources.
SwissToni
I remember in the 1980s when there were many complaints about Japanese tour groups descending upon tourist spots, causing a bit of havoc and then off back to the hotel to trash the bathroom. It was just ignorance rather than animus. Tourist areas have to develop better facilities to cope rather than destroying the environment that attracts residents and tourists alike.
Jonathan Prin
LDP next solution ; Just wrap it all and make pay through peepholes 1000¥ for each tourist (free for Japanese and residents)..
Blacklabel
Tourists shouted to one another! How dare they.
japan doesn’t deserve tourism money.
purple_depressed_bacon
Why not construct the world's biggest tarp and use it to cover Mt. Fuji instead? Better yet, ban all tourists from entering Japan! Let's see how long the economy lasts when the well of tourist revenue dries up.
Hear! Hear!

Before the tourism boom, negative stereotypes about foreigners and foreign tourists were prevalent. I remember people in the 90s saying that foreigners left rubbish, were loud, and didn't follow the rules.
Many news reports and local reactions reflect these longstanding stereotypes.
In other words, people expect 'bad' behaviour from foreigners and unconsciously look for it, focusing on isolated incidents. The truth is, that most tourists are respectful of local rules and culture.
wallace
If the French artist Christo Vladimirov Javacheff (1935–2020) was still alive he could wrap Fuji in buddle wraps.
smithinjapan
What?? Jaywalking? Obstructing people to take the "perfect photo"? Being loud while on vacation overseas? Parking illegally?
Japanese NEVER do these things, ever. So, it's gotta be all these foreigners.
Zaphod
Well, they wanted tourism, now they have to live with the undesirable side-effects.
Mie Fox
Send the tourists to the San-in region instead! Local people are grateful for the extra income from tourists and Mount Daisen is a pretty good substitute for the Fuji photo op.
Khuniri
I once lived in Hawai'i and still have family and property there. My wife worked in the tourist industry and, though quite loyal to Japan, as am I, noted with chagrin when Japanese tourists, usually in groups, yielded to the temptation of 旅の恥はかき捨て. Since then, overall behavior has vastly improved, at least to judge from my visits...I am very much hoping that the yen will again appreciate and that the tourist industry will shrink. Stories about misbehaving visitors, taking advantage of Japanese patience (or passivity), seem to bring out those non-Japanese living here with their own axes to grind.
Wesley
It's not really "anti-tourist" but anti-Uncultured-foreigner-who-cannot-follow-simple-etiquette.

Just tell foreign tourist that Japan doesn’t want you to visit Mt. Fuji site or even areas around there which give a good view of it! Just tell them directly that they are not welcomed!!!
Strangerland
You can see Fuji for dozens of kilometers in every direction around it.
But yes, the sky is falling chicken little.
Strangerland
Very acquiescent of you. I think the Japanese would rather manage the tourism than just let it go rampant, which is what they are doing now.
Strangerland
It's interesting how many people think that either they have to let the tourists do absolutely anything, or ban tourism altogether. Some people really have a hard time with the concept of nuance.
gcFd1
I'm boycotting Mt. Fuji.
kurisupisu
Perhaps the most iconic image of Japan and one that the Japanese just can’t bear to share.
What next for the money spending,GDP increasing unwanted tourist?
It might also be possible to prevent tourists from gawping at the sacred dormant volcano from the Shinkansen too?
Let’s hope a way is found.
Mike_Oxlong
They probably prevented a local from hearing their favorite sound truck. Interrupting politicians has consequences.
shogun36
they should just build a fence around all of Japan already. make sure nobody sees anything.
just like the endless World heritage sites, Japan sure can't get enough.
kurisupisu
The only solution is to prevent tourists from entering Japan.
Let’s build a wall around the whole country and close the airports!
JRO
I have a feeling it's the same old grumpy politician making all these complains.
William Mirrielees
In the previous discussions, I hear the word "foreigner" and tourist as if the only tourist are foreigners. I have been around enough to know there are many Japanese tourist who are touring their own country. They have not always behaved either. The problem here is the old axiom " Monkey see, Monkey do. Also; I don't understand how you jaywalk walking when using an overpass.
In it universal, tourist, foreign or local often don' follow the rules.

Lesson Number One, taught in the 2nd grade.
Everytime there's something fun and enjoyable there has to be one, just one cretin who always is doing something to spoil it all for everyone. Then we all get penalized for it and measures are taken.
Thanks for nothing, clods.
