This is kinda silly. Even if the guest cancels, the government will pay 50% to the hotel.

So... when the guest asks, what will the new price be now the campaign is cancelled. The hotel will reply, cancel now, re-book with this 50% discount code. No?

Go To campaign just a big scheme to transfer loads of taxpayer money to the Nikai faction families. I guess this was necessary to ensure that the Nikai faction receive their promised amounts. I guess many billionaires were made in the political families this year.

All I can determine so far is that COVID is more of a mental condition than a physical one, and those most susceptible to it are reporters and politicians.

Monty, I'm pretty sure JR alone was not covered by the GoTo program. So if they are just going home for the New Years holiday, then they are probably paying the same as usual. I think the point is, the government don't want them traveling home.

90% of my coworkers go back to their hometowns. They dont need any hotel, because they stay in their parents house.

And our company holiday starts from Dec. 26th, but the Campaign stops at 28th. So they are all fine for cheaper Shinkansen tickets, because almost all of my coworkers go back to their hometown on 26th or 27th.

And if they go after 28th, they are OK to pay the full price.

Most people will not cancel what they already booked and will go anyway.

Theyd have to pay the discounted 35 percent upon arrival at the hotel etc. though... So I think a lot of them will cancel it. Also not receiving vouchers sometimes worth in ten of thousands of yen at the destination hotel will bring the number of cancellations even more up.

Actually the reality is that most resorts and nice facilities, onsens, hotels in scenic spots, and even rental homes are all already sold out.

Most people will not cancel what they already booked and will go anyway.

So the notion that stopping it now is ending the travel is at best, optimistic.

The key terms here are "compensating travel businesses". The big agencies and institutions will get paid off, still lay off a lot of staff to shore up their bottom line for the next fiscal quarter as it will still be quite a while, even with a vaccine, before travel picks up. And the mugging "talent"'s agency will not lose a yen either.

Excluding the public who are paying for the subsidies and laid off workers it is a win-win for government and business.
