Wifi "along the routes"? Not sure what this means. is this hotspots at waystations between famous areas? I dont think that will do much good, since people will be quickly passing thru such locations rather than sticking around long enough to start web browsing or checking emails.

Putting wifi on trains and buses or actually at the tourist locations is a much better idea. And the services shouldnt require registration like submitting passwords, either.

Dear Kyodo News, it’s not free if you have to input your email address and sign in.

If JR East could just put ANY signal connection on the Yokosuka line, from around Bakurocho to shinagawa, that would be great. It's so shocking that a mainstream line, in a mainstream area of Tokyo, has ZERO signal.

Paul, from Bakurocho to Shinagawa SoftBank works perfectly, you'll get 3G and 4G.

Huh? How is that going to cost you money? Use a throw away e mail address if privacy is your concern.

A few days ago Japan was complaining about tourists. and now today they want to boost tourism. Can they not make a decision?

Free Wi-Fi has limitations of places and time. Also, English is no more the language we can communicate with tourists to Japan. It is Chinese and other Asian languages.

Can we actually get wi-fi that works? I don't think I've been to any shopping area, combini or train station where there's "free" wi-fi, and I can actually use it at a normal speed.

Yes, they are expanding languages. I heard what I think was an English announcement by the driver of the train the other day. It kind of resembled English. I'm still not sure what he was attempting to say though. My guess is, he was just ordered to make the announcement with no prior training and it was also most likely written in katakana for him to announce. It's just another example of minimalist Japan.

Japan already has free Wifi throughout most of its cities and train stations. You are lucky to get 2G speeds out of it though. Don't expect to be watching YouTube or uploading photos. Another example of minimalist Japan.

Exactly! Hit the nail on the head

Other Asians actually learned English. not Engrish or whatever Japanese think they learned.

Free wifi also depends upon the phone u using. Only Japanese branded mobiles get very fast connection. Therefore, sometimes u are forced to buy their handsets.

@ Aly Rustom

so how wil they know if the user is a Japanese or not?

It only works with phones with a foreign sim.
