The measures, under which restaurants and bars are required to close early and stop or limit the serving of alcohol, will likely remain in place until March 21, the officials said. The government will formally decide on the extension after consulting with a panel of health experts on Friday.

The gravy train of government subsidies, to people who already possess property and assets, paid for largely by workers who possess little of either, shall continue.

Japan has been facing a slower-than-expected fall in infection numbers due to the highly contagious Omicron variant, officials said Wednesday.

Nothing change significantly during emergency everything just same, people commute, restaurant open why expect that number falls?

wouldn't it be easier for the gov't to just cook the books and say that infections are falling? why go through all the hassle of endlessly extending the quasi state of emergency when that would be the simplest thing to do.

So jgov will keep giving my tax money to failing bars and izakayas whilst underfunding children's pre schools as the birth rates continue to tumble.

Anyway I'm over this now, all the bars I go to ignore this and are business as usual.

exactly!

You know, all they really have to do is close the schools and have students study from home while asking companies to have their workers WFH if possible. Limiting the traffic and the morning train crowdedness would go a long way to curb the spread. As for bars and restaurants, they would be allowed to operate their private rooms 個室 so as to keep them afloat. Not really that difficult

Every evening when workers are trying to get a bite to eat at a restaurant, it gets packed full of customers trying to beat the 8:30 dine-in curfew.

Then the few restaurant/bars that aren't going along with this nonsense, get packed to the walls just after 8:30. It defeats the whole purpose.

Just let these establishments stay open as usual but enforce strict crowding guidelines. That'd be much more effective.

After two years most people know these policies are a failed experiment. Problem is policticians and unelected "experts" have invested their reputations in this failure.

"Infection levels are still high in urban areas and we haven't seen much improvement trend in the countryside,"

Gee I wonder why? Could it be the overly packed trains every morning and evening? Or the overly crowded classrooms of schools? Or the overwhelming number of office workers still being told to work at the office? Hmm...such a mystery indeed!

"Not really that difficult"

@Aly Rustom what are millions of Japanese parents supposed to do under your genius plan to just close down the schools? Under this amazing plan, they would then be stuck at home unable to work.

Also, u might want to look up the mountain of evidence that lockdowns everywhere only made the spread of the virus worse,

Also, what evidence do you have that bars and restaurants operating a "private room" would somehow keep them afloat?

"Not really that difficult".....

Good god...

Its as if the past two years haven't happened and some people were asleep the entire time.
