More power to Japan! And thanks to the security agreement with the US that the Japanese troops will get valuable training. The US has some of if not the best amphibious assault units in the world.

Hey! It is about time! I just hope not to read about stupid drunk Japanese Marines getting into trouble in San Diego and or Tijuana! (Kind of like the mess down in Okinawa)
gaijinfo
LOL. Japanese marines would get eaten alive in Tijuana...
Elbuda Mexicano
Even US Marines know better than to look for trouble south of the border so I just hope these guys do get proper training without any major incidents, lost in Tijuana?? Etc... I can just imagine guys asking for Taro Tanaka, well Sarge, last we saw of Tanaka was in downtown TJ taking a bunch of tequila shots??

Lucky Japanese troops! I wish I could converge on California's southern coast for 2 weeks.
And, seriously, this is a good thing for the U.S.-Japan military alliance.

Like Invasion USA. where is Chuck Norris when we need him?

Royal Marines are better ^_^

But young Americans are willing to die if there was oil, just like in the middle east. Let them build up their own army (Japanese), but restrict them from building a superior army than the Americans, because we all know the Americans wants to control the world cough China too cough.
But they can't win against the Viet Minh/Viet Cong back in war (and the Korean war where China simply overpowered the Americans, to push them back till '53). As long as there's no guerilla tactics involved in a war, America is the winner due to its superior firepower which taxpayers pay ~$600b.

Uh, actually not. They're good though, don't get me wrong.

The Canadians actually outdo the Yanks in friendly war exercises that they hold. With outdated equipment even.

Good, the better trained the allies are, the better they will be ready to respond to aggressions by the PRC.

Fun in the sun in So. Cali!

Getting a bit ahead of yourself. There are no Japanese Marines. The SDF forces that will train with the amphib units will come from the ground self defense forces.

It is ironic the the skill used by the USA in WWII is the the one being taught . It is also China's major weakness, exposed coastline. They can move troop quick enough to responsed to multiple water Bourne attacks. They lack that air and navy to prevent a strong attack at any one point. Their Amry is big but slow.

“It’s another dot that the Chinese will connect to show this significant expanding military cooperation,”
Well yes, I hope so. This "military cooperation" has been going on since 1950. And that is now including training to take back islands is merely a response to China's current behavior towards it's Asian neighbors.

Although nobody actually does amphibious attacks anymore thanks to the helicopter and STOL aircraft like the Osprey. Former Defense Secretary Gates went so far as to openly question the need for the Marine Corps given that they were essentially performing Army infantry missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

San Diego is quite a bit hit now. Hope they can visit Disneyland and other fun places in Orange County before they go home.

uh, it's a 'self defense' force. Why do they need "amphibious attack abilities."? Is Abe trying to test the limits of Article 9?
CheeseHeadNL
The USMC is a well-equiped an trained expeditionary army, while the Royal Marines are a small commando unit. Two totally incomparable branches. The only things they share is their names. Given the fact that Royal Marines are commando units, I would say that they are better trained than the USMC.

Wow Jamie Tran- still fighting the fight of the 60's good for the Party I see!
old wars are just that old wars - good to digest and view from the - what would happen if we had done this= perspective.
but little to no relevance now.
Amphibious training for Japan a Nation of Islands with Islands in dispute is good= in the Asian/Pacific theater that will come in handy for relief and for defense purposes.
if you are really looking for aggression- you build out your special forces, your airborne, your stealth capability, your carriers (oh wait- japan only has one Airborne, no Stealth or aircraft Carriers,, China does hmmmm) just sayin.....
bass4funk
Had no idea, Canada had a military. What for?
Molenir
If one of their islands is taken, or is being taken...
Maitake
like, say, see it as a drill to improve amphibious attack abilities, for instance?
gelendestrasse
Let's see if they extend the beach head all the way to Las Vegas....

my wife has been given a temporary contract to teach survival mandarin to the troops while in LA

Hope the Japan will forget to get back Russian Islands.

This is wonderful news and a great sign of Japan's willingness to upgrade and improve its Navy and Army in necessary abilities. It is also a watershed change from the years of WWII and a wonderful sign of healing between two of the leading Pacific Powers into a detente that should have continued from the earliest years of the 1900s. Now things are in a good balance and I am very very happy to see this. Full Speed Ahead !

Just waiting for the right wing alarmist headline, "Japanese Troops Invade California!" [Grin]

Stay away from the Donkey shows in Tijuana.

War in jungles are mostly won by the most numerous team. Just like 1000marines vs 1000chinese soldiers in a jungle Americans will win. But 1000VS9000 not.
tokyodoumo
This Joint Exercise plan is a cunning strategy by Japan but I think it will cause China to have even stronger determination to fight for their heritage and pride. Ultimately Japan must realize in compromise to settle this issue otherwise it will never be resolved.
LFRAgain
Dots needed connecting here? Japan and the U.S. have had a virtually unbreakable military alliance since the 70s. China wasn't sure about this before, but have connected enough dots to think it's the case now?
{chuckle}
numbies
If by friendly war exercises you mean be super polite to your enemy and beg them to not kick the crap out of you.
We need to keep helping out our great Japanese friends as much as we can. Hopefully our military can train other branches with the Japanese also.Good to see France and Japan working on military equipment also! The only thing I would complain about is Japan not having any nuclear bombs, we have so many I think we should hook them up.
BigdaddyJ
I agree with you numbies, give Japan some of our nukes. Imagine a future where cyborg ninja stalk their enemies with pocket nukes.
