Splendid upgrade.
Defacing coins is illegal.

I just hope they upgrade the vending machines before these coins are distributed. There's always been a time lag before the machines start to accept them causing me endless headaches.

I’m surprised they don’t redo the ¥10,000 note to force the population to show what they are holding onto. Maybe too many of their own in the mattress.

Refreshing, while at it please reduce the size if possible, also how about the 10,000 yen note! it is HUGE, LOL
my wallet Zippers constantly bites a chunk out of it, then I have to go to thank and exchange it.

Wouldn't be effective. They don't demonetize old notes. You can still spend old 100 and 500 yen notes if you choose to.

interestingly all Japanese notes are the same length but differ in width unlike many countries.

The new coins, which do not differ substantially from the current design
What a surprise. It's new, but pretty much indistinguishable from something 20 years old. Wonder how much this little tweak cost us?
Change something, or don't change it. Don't bill us for work done and then make no noticeable difference.

I notice that it says "JAPAN" and "500YEN" in tiny letters on the obverse; is this the first time they've put the name of the country in English on a coin? I'd rather see NIPPON as they put on the bills.
Still, it's a nice-looking coin and plenty of other countries have gone to bimetallic designs for their highest-value coins. It looks much better than the hideous banknotes they're planning to introduce in a few years. Those are a gigantic aesthetic downgrade from what we have now.

People don't use coins very much nowadays. They use their Suica, Pasmo, and other types of cards. Why forge new 500 coins? It's a waste and outdated. So of course this government will do it.

Does it still cost 500 yen?

typical Japan, do something new but make it look exactly like the old one

I do not see any connection.

delayed updates to ticket and automated teller machines amid the pandemic.
It takes longer to update machines if all your workers are being asked to stay home?
And for those not teleworking, probably other stuff took precedence.

The last thing Japan needs is more coins.

Looks like they copied the UK £2 coin!

Either get rid of 1 yen coins or make them acceptable in machines.

Is this really the time for the government to be doing this? I mean, probably it is been planned for years, but it seems as if there are other priorities right now.
tooheysnew
let’s just get rid of them - totally useless

"Shibusawa Eiichi formulated a plan along with cousins and friends to capture Takasaki Castle and set fires in the foreign settlement in Yokohama" Hhaha what the F!
What a lovely person to have on our money bills, literally a Meiji-era mobster/terrorist

Funny, zichi! They have trouble dealing with any priorities (lame 'lockdowns', lame Olympics, lame vaccination programme....)

Why didn’t they now also correct that little ‘error’ with those coins , but still not having the center hole while other with cipher 5 beginning coins, 5-¥ and 50-¥ have it.
MilesTeg
In Canada, they've finally started rounding-off to make pennies redundant. Pennies and ¥1 coins make no sense.

Something I have said before but anyway: If you add up the total of all Japan's coins it comes to 666. Which shows the Devil is in the detail :).
Wondering, will these new 500 yen coins defeat the evil Korean worthless coin of the same weight that can be used to not only buy a coffee from a vending machine, but also give you a healthy return on your investment.
dan
Why is this even news?
The coins are almost identical to the current ones...lol

Make the different note denominations different sizes.
