You do understand that pollution can travel thousands of miles away from its source.

Both Korea and China are streets ahead of Japan in making electric vehicles right?

There are so many ways that Japan can cut down on emissions and easily adopt greener energy.

It doesn’t because giving control to the citizen over power is anathema to the self serving politicians.

Japan's emissions are 3.2% of the total. To reduce emissions further in Japan, an industrialized country, would require a transformation of the industrial structure. It would cost a lot of money that would be far beyond what it would be worth.

Before that, China, the United States, India, and Russia account for more than 50% of the total, so these countries, which have not taken any measures so far, should reduce their emissions to less than half of what they are now.

In Japan, where hybrid cars are the majority, there is no way that going over 20-30km/h will make a big difference. The consumption of crude oil in Japan's car society is decreasing every year.

You can burn garbage at night or whatever you want.

It is the government's job to monitor whether the companies are taking environmental measures.

How about looking at the skies of China and Korea and then criticizing Japan?

The photochemical smog warnings have almost disappeared recently.

It is good to see positive steps taken.

Is the writer suggesting that Japan can regulate the world climate?

No, but everyone can do their bit. Japan doesn't.

The roads are full of vehicles regularly going 20-30 kph above the posted speed limits.

Not only are drivers continually breaking the law but also spewing out more pollution as a result of excess speed.

Sleeping in cars and trucks whilst engines are running is the norm here.

Absolutely right. Compare Tokyo with just about any city in western Europe and the contrast couldn't be greater. Where are the bicycle lanes in Tokyo? Where, much of the time, are the pavements even? Where are the parks and trees? Where is there any environmental awareness? Tokyo is so far behind it is frankly third-world.

its greenhouse gas emissions by between 60 and 66 percent by fiscal 2035, government sources said Sunday, as the country braces for another sweltering summer amid global warming.

Is the writer suggesting that Japan can regulate the world climate? This is so insane on so many levels. Even if Japan was removed from the map, that would not have an effect on the world climate. Total hubris.

I'm always looking for articles about ocean turbine development, off shore wind turbine farms, home solar/wind generating advice/information for regular citizens.

I'm aways dissapointed because the Japanese government has no interest in any of these industries or practices.

They desperately want the Japanese population to keep relying on TEPCO and other monopolized faux public corporations.

Too late. Japan is far far FAAAAR behind many other industrialized countries.

Too late... Too slow... Too bad.

Got a very simple start,

How about having local municipalities sending letters asking factories, small businesses and farmers to STOP BURNING their trash at night when no one can see the smoke. Outlaw incinerators of all kind as they are being used to burn their trash or restrict their sale.

Help these violators dispose their trash in an AFFORDABLE way so they don't have to burn it to save money.

Just take a walk at night and the smell from the burning plastics and trash will choke you.

Japan is a joke!

The roads are full of vehicles regularly going 20-30 kph above the posted speed limits.

Not only are drivers continually breaking the law but also spewing out more pollution as a result of excess speed.

Sleeping in cars and trucks whilst engines are running is the norm here.

Stricter enforcement and better environmental education is needed…
