The buyer of a 16.88 million yen tuna at Tokyo's traditional New Year auction said Wednesday he hoped the purchase would "brighten" a COVID-hit 2022.

YEEAAAHH....

I don't think buying a fish is going to "brighten" a COVID-hit 2022.

Same old show as every year. But the pandemic has hit demand hard. Both domestic and foreign visitors, the latter which are presently nonexistent. Carrying on the same show isn't going to fix that. But have fun anyway.

Best catch up with the times. The Covid pandemic has created a drop in demand for many resources including Tuna. Unfortunately the flip side of that is a slow down in the Tuna aqua culture business.

When you have to pay Yen 20.000 minimum for a dinner.

I am not sure about the restaurant that won this year but I went to Sushi Zanmai a few times which won the auction several times. I paid like 1800yen for lunch which was filling and better tasting than the 100yen sushi shops. I went there with my wife but of course with the kids it's 100yen sushi all the way.

I am amazed at the waste of money for a tuna. That money should be a rise in wages for all the Companies workers instead they choose to spend the profit earn by all the workers on a over price tuna. Now if I work at this company I be straight up the office demanding a rise in my wages. But the Japanese minimum wage earners are willing to wear this stupidity spending on a tuna instead of insisting on a decent wage. The Japanese workers will never get a rise when they allow this sort of stupid spending or lies about not affordable by their bosses.

No, that’s not a good decision. You’d better had gone to their office long before that auction in this case, before they even thought about or considered to take part in early January. How could they ever afford now a bigger wage rise or give it to you easily, after they just had to put such a big sum of money on the table for that auction win of one moon priced fish?

I can't see them getting even half of the money back on that tuna from guesstimations. Interesting phenomena buying at such high prices.

Man buys fish. Can see why such an amazing event is headline news.

What a monopoly, the same 211-kilogram Tuna will sell for about $2,000 USD any where else in the world, but then Japanese will say it's fake or contaminated, or it's not caught by Japanese, I just love how people make something out of NOTHING.
