Japan unveils guidelines on refugee status recognition for 1st time

Very long overdue. Should have happened decades ago. Will it mean anything?

In 2021, Japan gave refugee status to 74 people, a record high since it started granting such status in 1982. But the number is far fewer than in European countries and the United States, where over 10,000 refugees are taken in annually.

74, Japan still stuck in two digits.

Is Japan ready for an influx of non speaking refugees who are desperate? I’ve seen two Indian restaurant workers shoplifting, and I told them to put the things back, in English, they said “what you gonna do, you want to get fed up?” They worked a restaurant near my then house, which closed because of the pandemic. Japan is like a cookie jar with no lid for some of these people.

To not let the refugee seekers die on immigration centers would be a huge improvement.

Mark the part where it says it does not mean more people will be granted asylum. What percent is 74 of the 10,000 other nations let in? I guess if it were 100 that other nations let in, Japan's new record would be 74% of what others do. If it were 1000 that other nations EACH let in, it would be a mere 7.4% accomplishment of what other nations have achieved. Since it is an average of 10,000 each, Japan's success rate is an absolutely shameful 0.74%. And yet, they want to look good by giving other nations money to allow in refugees while they refuse to even call people here who fled from Ukraine by that term, making up some new word that will allow Japan to deport them at any given time.

The agency compiled the guidelines after an expert panel within the Justice Ministry in December 2014 proposed enhancing the transparency and credibility of its refugee recognition process.

Only took 9 years. Was the fax machine broken?

74 is a disgraceful number for any first world country. So much for noblesse oblige.

Please don't follow the path of the UK and Europe. Few "real" refugees will come to Japan.

Just UNBELIEVABLE.

It will be much more Humane and respectful if Japan just adopt a ZERO REFUGEE policy so everyone knows where it stands and keep their dignity.

Where on earth did this figure of 10, 000 refugees come from?

There are 60, 000, 000 refugees in the world at present and growing everyday.

And why are "European countries and the United States" used as examples?

The world is a much wider place.

Look at the numbers taken in in Turkey , Jordan and the Lebanon.

This is so pathetic, the Japanese government should be ashamed of themselves. So much for being an intentional team player.

Please Japan, don't fall in that trap..

Some of the nicest and most welcoming people I have met in Japan have been foreigners.

For those thinking that there will be a huge flow of refugees or migrants to Japan are just plainly overreacting and fearful.

Japan will never be overrun by foreigners for the simple reason that it is geographically distant from other countries, the language isnot international enough,there are fewer opportunities in an ailing and over regulated economy etc

All of the above and more do not point to Japan being a place that is ever going to be popular in the foreseeable future.
