China can do 1 of 2 things when they enter the international maritime community. They either behave themselves and act mature. Or they act like a spoilt brat who gets smacked back into place.

No worries, China will never invade Okinawa after U.S. forces leave.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda stepped in to buy part of the chain from their private owner.

China may ask Japan to delegalize this purchase (?)

3 ( +4 / -1 )

What Japan asks is oxymoron in the first place.

Seapower=military and there is virtually no way you use the military in a peaceful way.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

China is behaving today the way Japan did from 1922 onwards.

-5 ( +9 / -14 )

Japan can talk all that they want, but when it comes down to the bottom line, Japan can never compete with China.

The first reason why this is so is because Japan is still stuck in their own world without making much progression in moving forward. All of the young people in Japan today have no idea on what to do with their lives. Especially the guy's. They all don't have much inspiration in life which is causing Japan to fall into a deep dark hole.

The second reason why Japan can never compete with China is because they do not have the man power like China. If you count the population of Japan, the number of people in Japan doesn't come close to the number of people that are in China.

If you ask me, I truly think Japan should swallow their idiotic pride and work on a solution to make things better for both China and Japan.

Japan needs to get their lazy idiotic kids out of the house and put them all into a real world. As of it is now, it is like most of the young kids in Japan are stuck behind animation world behind a computer and or game counsel.

This is a fact that is hard to swallow. Many people here will disagree with what I wrote, but this is a truth that can never be proven wrong, no matter how many excuses you make.

-4 ( +9 / -13 )

There is nothing remarkable about the recent escalation Senkaku/Daioyu islands dispute. One gets the impression that the Japanese and Chinese diplomats on both sides are merely going through the motions. One side reiterates its decades-old position, and the other is obligated to respond, then it's back to business as usual. Diplomats are known for their limitless patience. Everybody knows that Japan will never relinquish the islands, which China claims as its territory.

Time will tell who was right. For now, the U.S. is probably regretting that it let itself get dragged into this conflict in the first place. U.S. does not deny that its goal was to provoke a never-ending Chinese-Japanese dispute while protecting Japan with its military bases. These "principled and consistent" positions dating many decades back look out of place in a today's world. The U.S. probably would have preferred to forget about consistency this time, as its support for Japan only serves to bring China and Russia closer together, but U.S. just could not abandon a position it has held for many decades.

In the 1970's when China was still stuck in the past, Japan helped China with over $6 billion dollars in ODA to build infastructure there. At the time, the Chinese goverment censored the goodwill the Japanese did so the average people on the streets never knew the goodwill assistance they did. It becomes quite clear that China does not value long term friendship. It has switched or abandoned its friends when it is convenient or useful to do so. The old pre-historic ways still stay strong in China.

Would be nice if Japan practiced what it preached, be it around the disputed isles, in the Souther Ocean, or wherever else they decide they have a right to go.

KariHaruka: "Take away all the business that the world have given them and what do they end up with? A country with a high unemployment rate and a economy which would quickly tumble."

Actually, given the fact that Japanese companies are suffering severely from what's going on whereas there doesn't seem to be quite so much going wrong over in China, it's become quite clear that Japan is the one doing most of the suffering. Granted, it's more to do with the economy and business in general, with major companies in BIG trouble, than mere unemployment rising, but this is definitely not going well for Japan. Ishihara should never have started all this, as we all suffer for his actions.

-2 ( +7 / -9 )

Sfjp30 >>> You are totally correct in what you said. That is why the Chinese are on an upward swing, and that is why the Chinese people can never be trusted at all. All that Chinese people care about is themselves and no one else.

Japanese people seem do not get it! Rather than getting serious with China, they are playing a game with China in which will end in a loss for Japan.

Unless Japan start to get their kids out of their fantasy world and into the real world, Japan will always be stuck between a rock and a hard unbearable wall, which will lead them into a deep pit that they will never get out of.

Just look around when you are on the streets in Shibuya, Harajuku, Shiinjuku and many other places in Japan. You will see that the kids of Japan today are all a bunch of spoiled brats with parents that don't know how to be parents at all.

With that kinds of things happening in Japan on a daily basis at an alarming rate, mark my word, Japan will soon fall into disrepair.

The bad thing about the Japanese society of Today is that their are many many people in Japan today that are living in denial and who which refuse to face this fact head on.

Can't wait for China's economic bubble to burst. Had enough of them already. They would be absolutely nothing without the foreign investment over the past 30 years. Now they are going to tell the west what to do?

Japan is moving out of dirty hazardous hardship production. Living on capital & intellectual property. China has a long way to catch up. Along the way, China risks pollution & riots getting out of control. She needs a new mindset.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

The problem with China is it thinks it can manhandle everyone that it can economically destroy a country as small as the Philippines or Vietnam but grow weary against economically more diverse country like Japan. The Chinaman should think carefully that not everyone wants to be party on what Beijing is doing in East Asia and South East Asia. Countries like the Philippines and Vietnam may be militarily weak but world opinion sway towards these two.

China has been crying and crying since it started. Do some more homework smith! Haha Your always so anti-Japan my friend, maybe you should go home.

Good on you Japan for once again being the bigger man in this silly little debate.

alladin: " All that Chinese people care about is themselves and no one else. Japanese people seem do not get it!"

Funny, the same thing can be said about Japanese -- ESPECIALLY the uber-nationalists who complain that everyone else except them only care about themselves (that's called hypocrisy).

Anyway, thumb me down all you want, peeps. The fact remains that the J-economy is tanking worse than ever, and exports of finished products at their lowest in a long time, with the articles themselves stating the reason is due to current tensions with China. If you can't swallow it, don't make it so. The two nations have to work together or both will suffer, with Japan suffering more in the short and long run (China will always have demand from other nations if not Japan).

Meanwhile in Japan we are looking at the possibility of a new PM -- 7th since 2006 -- in the very near future. How can people seriously talk about Japan as 'superior' in terms of actions and politics when they are constantly quitting after the quick game of musical chairs?

Tsk Tsk Tsk. Again with the negative crap talk about Japan. It seems no matter what the subject you have negativity against Japan. Get back on subject this is not about voting and new pm's in Japan mate. This is about the island dispute. Japan has a massive future ahead of it, know why? Because it is on the right side of the fence. It is doing the right thing in this dispute and it will come out on top clean.

Keep up the mature attitude Japan!

China = Irresponsible Japan = Responsible

I can't see it any other way, i.e., I haven't bought into the Communist Party's propaganda.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

SmithinJapan, you made some very huge generalizations about Japan.

Who cares if someone only cares about themselves? That is the foundation of capitalism. I am happy my kids don't have to suffer and can enjoy life, even if it means living a pampered life.

The problem is, in doing so, you should not put others in jeopardy. Case in point, making a fast buck by putting poison in milk to allow you to pass tests when you water the milk down. This type of incident happens all the time in China: poisonous fertilizer used in fish ponds, growth hormones in chickens, poisonous ingredients in dog food and toothpaste, all to make a buck in China.

In fact, during the Olympics, the U.S. Olympic team brought every bit of food they ate from outside of China, why? Because Chinese could be trusted to provide unadulterated food.

Here is my generalization for China: I will not willingly consume Chinese food or allow my family or even a dog to eat Chinese food. Unfortunately, I associate that generalization with most things Chinese, except Apple products, etc. and things that don't go in or on my body. Japan shouldn't trust China either. There is no reason to trust them.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Cortes Elijah: "Tsk Tsk Tsk. Again with the negative crap talk about Japan.

So it's perfectly okay to 'crap talk' about China, but point out the similarities in attitude and people can't hack it?

"It seems no matter what the subject you have negativity against Japan."

To the narrow-minded and subjective, yes. What I seek to do is merely add a bit of balance where the blind see the issue as completely one-sided. Many of the things Japan complains about (the government and the people in many cases) they do, and need to clean up, in their own back yard. This is no exception, and I pointed that out in my last post and said BOTH need to make efforts, NOT only China.

"Get back on subject this is not about voting and new pm's in Japan mate. This is about the island dispute."

And who is involved in the dispute but the governments of the two nations? Are the PM of Japan and the President of China not part of that? You guys criticize the Chinese government and the nation as a whole, but point out the flaws of the government in Japan and suddenly you call it 'off-topic'. Pointing out the revolving PMs here points out a lack of solid leadership, which in turn points out an inability to make proper and binding decisions, on ALL issues (including the island issue).

The people who are TRULY negative towards Japan are those who think Japan is perfect, has no problems, and this whole thing is all China's fault and Japan the victim, for they tend to favour politics and politicians who are unwilling to see that fact and push instead for further tensions and even aggression. Nationalists do the nation no favor.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

viking68: "SmithinJapan, you made some very huge generalizations about Japan."

At least you admit later in your comment that you make gross generalizations towards things Chinese. And anyway I didn't generalize about all of Japan, I pointed out clearly that I was refering to 'uber-nationalists' in regards to the hypocrisy.

Cortes: "Keep up the mature attitude Japan!"

There's a laugh, especially given their reasons for Senkaku being theirs only apply for the Senkakus, where they claim the same reasons do not apply to other nations (ie. SK and Russia) a few of the other disputes, and you have old codgers like Ishihara WISHING for war! Very mature indeed.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Readers, please stop bickering. Focus your comments on the story and not at each other.

Cortes: Sorry, I meant to add that if you're going to say addressing the PM on this thread is 'off-topic', then so is the island issue, really, for this is about China being 'responsible' with it sea power, not about the Senkaku islands. See what I mean? :)

0 ( +2 / -2 )

@Alladin and Smithinjapan-I agree with you. Who is suffering the most now? Japan. With all the disasters recently and economic downturn, why make more trouble with your best economic partner? And yes the young generation will suffer even more. There is no future in Japan economically, it is a constant uphill battle because of the volatile thinking of the Gov. Playing musical chairs with Prime Ministers is also a good example of how the so-called top guys cant even rule there own problems and keep passing them on. When do the people in Japan actually get to VOTE freely for a Prime Minister of their choice? Never. One way or another China will win this conflict I am sure and as for the excuse of the Chinese wanting Military advantage on these islands, the same can be said about Japan.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

@flipper

When do the people in Japan actually get to VOTE freely for a Prime Minister of their choice?

Nobody anywhere votes for a Prime Minister. S/he is by definition the leader of the party in power, that's how the politics work. It's not a presidential system. (And all the better for that, I reckon).

0 ( +2 / -2 )

@lucabrasi Then they need a President at any case my point was something is obviously not right somewhere if the people suffer economically simply because of some Islands that most have never even heard of before. The conflict doesn't take into consideration the public otherwise Japan's intention with the Islands would have been clearly spoken out and public opinions taken into account. But no, this is never done, the Gov simply goes ahead and act before they speak until the music stops and someone else gets the responsibility. There is obviously a bigger hidden agenda behind these Islands probably from both parties.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

@flipper

You're right. There's an arrogance you see in certain politicians here that wouldn't be tolerated by the electorate in some other countries.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I feel for the next decade it's impossible for Japan to accept China in whatever manner even democracy as I do not think it's about China only but rather its own precious status in both soft and hard power.

China's hard power is going smoothly while its soft power has yet to shine but once it does, the days of China bashing and whining would significantly decrease similar how people embrace Japan after World War II but as impatience as we can be, how long it takes would depend on the next young leaders in China.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

China cannot be trusted. Now that they have progressed with the help of other countries investing to their cheap labor force, the Chinese took that advantage in imitating their products and know how and gaining momentum to become asia's top economy by selling them cheaper than the original products to the world. If only China can behave as other international nations, problems won't exist with China's neighboring countries. China now became GREEDY and powerful. Beware If the whole chinese population will jump all together at the same time in china sea, the world will experience the most devastating Tsunami ever. That's how hugh China's population. For the Senkaku Islands, since Okinawans are really eager to evict US Military base for too much troubles, they can tell USA to build and transfer their bases at the Senkaku Islands.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

With proper education to its immense population and high employment, the Chinese can achieve a so called American dream for their country. A military showdown with the US or Japan would only throw a wrench into that machinery. Maybe not in our lifetime, but predictably the next twenty to thirty years will be Asia's turnaround in economics that may be where the world will go peacefully I hope.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@ Kolbe Max I believe you are referring to the Paracel Islands issue right? I find it ironic that China claim on those islands has similar logic to Japanese claim on Senkaku islands.

The Paracels -- or Hoang Sa Islands in Vietnamese -- have been controlled by China since 1974 but are claimed by Vietnam.

http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5hbZ_WSV2cInDVhca4SQNQ4Qpl2bw?docId=CNG.7c99eaf6c5fb2d48dcae3b14ad0b0cff.171

It should be pointed out that the government of the then Democratic Republic of Vietnam (i.e. North Vietnam) took the official position that both the Paracels and the Spratlys belonged to Chinese based on historical records. That position did not change until after North Vietnam succeeded in "liberating" and unifying the whole Vietnam in 1975.

The news is reporting that Japan backed out of a joint exercise that simulated recapturing a little rock of an island. Japan was worried how it would look to China. America got mad and said something along the lines that you need to show you are serious or China will continue to run over you.

Now, Japan has sent representatives asking for changes in the joint defense agreement to specifically address China's aggression.

Smith, here is a quote of what you wrote: "the same thing can be said about Japanese." You then emphasize right wingers. So, a generalization of all of Japan and with special emphasis on a group is still a generalization about all of Japan. My use of the word "generalizations" about China was a euphemism for "real fears of endemic problems within China". That is why families are sending their children overseas to get citizenship in countries like Canada, Australia, etc. Families see it as insurance in case the Chinese government goes completely loco.

Same as the way the Japanese censored from its people how much gold, treasures and other valuable spoils of war it robbed from China from 1890s to 1940s. For sure it is way, way, way more than $6 billion.

China NEEDS to look after its own backyard, and that includes the stretch of its immediate Sea Coast and access to the Pacific. Japan's intention to blockade China and seize China's maritime territory all the way to China's Continental Shelf, by annexing Diaoyu Islands, mirror exactly the events leading to the 1894-95 First Sino-Japanese War, where Japan aggressively annexed China's territory and took 330 million taels (over 400 million ounces) of gold under Shimonoseki. This is China securing its own backyard to ensure that Japan and its ally, the US will hesitate to embark on an aggressive campaign and seize China's territories AGAIN, as both repeatedly did in history.

Japan will never repent from their hostile intentions towards China and its aggression against its neighbors who were viciously invaded and killed. To this day, Japan still covets its neighbor's territories, eg. Diaoyu Islands, and the surrounding huge sea territory right off China. Don't deceive yourselves into thinking you are such a GREAT people and the reason your neighbors dislike your aggressive nature is due to them being "brainwashed". The opposite is true, Japan is brainwashing itself about it's own "greatness" and "civility", etc., pretending it doesn't conduct massive military and naval exercises, concealing with the collusion of the MSM its own military build-up and nuclear ambitions, while refusing to return spoils of war to its former victims, gold or territories such as these islands, continuing to worship their Class A criminals, etc. I am not even a PRC citizen, never lived in the PRC, but this is how we Chinese see you, and how your neighbors, including Korea and Russia, see you.

What are you rambling about. Your comments doesn't seem to make sense. Let me put it this way to you.

After WWII Japan was forced to start all over again in its industry and manufacturing. Japan had learn, adopt and in times copy and improved on various products. China has also followed this path. There is nothing wrong with this. The US also had improved its technology by taken the German Scientist to US, housed them and gave them an opportunity to research in advance technology and in doing so provided US with the platform to be a super power of today. China through history had not colonized any country nor did it attack anyone. All this drummed up about China and Japan conflict descending into some sort of war is far from correct and probably someones imagination. When China and Japan have worked out their differences and India get involved. It would be the Asian Century.

There are some Chinese cultural relics in the Paracel islands dating from the Tang and Song dynasty eras,[18][note 1] and there is some evidence of Chinese habitation on the islands in these periods.[19] According to the Wujing Zongyao, a book published in the Northern Song dynasty in 1044, the Song government then included the Islands in the patrol areas of the Navy of the Court.

When top leaders who took part in the 1972 talks, including Chinese Premier Enlai and Japanese PM Tanaka, had the leadership to set aside minor differences for the sake of common objectives. The friendly ties was more of a political, and for the business leaders, as well as the mass media when the two countries normalized relations 40 years ago, but it was impossible for the average Chinese people and the media at that time to openly challenge the government's decision. Japan still has a distorted perception of China without looking at the realities of the country and is unable to come up with a long-term strategy on what to do with the relations. They both have no long-term vision for bilateral relations and have very narrow image and stereotype toward the other country. The Japanese media needs to do a lot more to report on the changing and diversifying China today from a variety of perspectives. And the very same problem exists with the Chinese media about reporting Japan.
