Expect this to become commonplace. It's the China-US rivalry, with Japan getting stuck in between. Beijing has been holding aircraft carrier patrols as a show of force in the past years, and at a time like this, let's just guess that the PLA is more than willing to spend their fuel to flex their muscle. The best Japan can do is to prevent any Chinese asset from venturing any closer to Japan as China is known to do this by the way - to continually hold patrols closer and closer to a country to prod its weaknesses. Do not fall for it, let them burn out their fuel.

Japan getting stuck in between.

USA never fights its many wars on its own land. Already US officials have admitted USA is at war with China. It’s obvious the physical war will be in Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines. China is watching Ukraine, as well as USA bases in Japan.

Be prepared.

After Bongbong Marcos was elected the new president of the Philippines its unlikely the country will take place in any US led war. South Korea can serve as a substitute.

Let’s see it also a little bit positive, considering that this was a splendid possibility to test , adjust and increase the capabilities of the new big radar installation on Yonaguni. When else would one have the chance to fully test it if not a very real enemy flotilla comes into detection radius?

Once china has increased its carrier strength, and the US economy is so linked to china, and the CCP feels the economy is getting worse and they feel threatened, they may try to take Taiwan. The USA will not get into a direct shooting war. but will probably just send some arms to Taiwan. Infact the US even had a hard time sending weapons to the UK during the Falklands war and had to be pushed to do it.

These aren't all in the pacific, and we have seen how vulnerable ship are to missile, or drone attacks. You dont need to sink them. You just need to hit them. No nuclear super power has gone directly to war, and since the US doesn't have any bases on Taiwan, I don't expect the US navy to go toe to toe directly in a shooting war. Not unless china directly hits the USA first. A good example would be pearl harbor 1941, and the sinking of the lusitania in WW1. On the other hand it will only get involved if another group of countries will go to war along side the USA or a country it can kick ass with. EG, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanstan.

So is Japan happy to act as cannon fodder for USA? This is how USA does all the aggressive bullying. By getting others to do the dangerous work. See Ukraine. For once, I'd like to see countries like Japan put themselves first instead of putting USA first.

It’s obvious the physical war will be in Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines.

Only if China starts it. BTW, you left off a country - China.

The US has had wars in North America, so "never" is incorrect. Plus, about 70 yrs ago, Hawaii was part of a war ... at least that's what I recall from school.

There are different sorts of wars. Not all are shooting. Some are political, some are trade, some are over ideologies and some are "cold."

I think Biden made a mistake in saying the US wouldn't fight directly against Russia.

I think Biden also made a mistake when he didn't say that Russia stepped to far in saying nukes would be used. The following day, a few cruise missiles should have hit Russian forces just inside Ukraine.

Military leaders in all countries are fearful of nuclear war. Only idiots aren't. Call the Russian bluff. Give the Russian military good cause to remove Putin for causing a nuclear war. Russians aren't crazy, even if the top dictator is. It is too late now. They've all backed down.

I don't have any issue with China performing exercises in international waters. Watch them. Study them. Learn how to screw them up, if a shooting war happens. If they enter Japanese waters (not just the EEZ), then some warning shots across the bow of the the Chinese boat should be sent after demands to turn around are ignored. And if there is 1 fishing pole in the water off the side of the carrier, send the Japanese coast guard to board and fine them. Use a 50cal to get their attention. ;) Fishing in another country's EEZ is illegal.

Japan has always put itself first. That's why it wants US bases here, and is working closer with other countries.

One thing is for sure, Japan won't do anything to help any other country. Heck! it couldn't even decide to help another country in Iraq if it was confirmed they were under attack and the Japanese were the closest army. They also had a big argument about wether or not to take machine guns. Japan will only accept others military help, but isn't the quickest to offer military help to others. Ukraine? Falklands? Iraq 1? Iraqi 2? Afghanistan? Especially if it comes to something like a shooting war. But they'll pay for others to fight, die, by opening the cheque book for

Imagine this, all the East Asian countries, perhaps Asean too, put aside everything, and negotiate over everything, IE sovereignty, territories, trades, foreign bases etc, without outsiders, USA, Western countries, just their own interests, shared interest.

How much benefits their citizens will get/enjoy??

Of course, be prepared so lots and lots of resistance/objection/threats of war, from the Western countries/USA.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

The Liaoning is basically a floating coffin. It is 30 year old plus Soviet hardware and carries about 1/3 of the aircraft of a mainline American carrier. Even one of the smaller Japanese Izumo class would make short work of it, once they are equipped with F-35s.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Japan is only country in Asia that has actual experience with aircraft carrier and submarine operations, and modern naval warfare. And that country is now allied with the country that beat them at the same game. Money can buy lots of toys but it can't buy historical experience studied in naval colleges over decades and decades.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

China will not go to war with the States.

This is just for bullying, actually they play the long game, they're buying a lot of real estate in Japan, this is the real CCP's strategy.

Look at the Uighur and Tibet... and read the Silent Invasion Book..

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Expect this to become commonplace.

Yes, it will happen more often in the foreseeable future.

It's the China-US rivalry, with Japan getting stuck in between.

No, this is China wanting regional dominance and territorial expansion at Japans and others expense. The US presence slows down China's ambitions and supports Japanese territorial integrity.

So is Japan happy to act as cannon fodder for USA? This is how USA does all the aggressive bullying. By getting others to do the dangerous work.

How is Japan monitoring Chinese naval operations in and around its territory in any way Japan being cannon fodder for anyone? The US is not involved in Chinese actions and Japans response to those actions. Once again a pro china hack making untrue claims to attack the US, which it has a deep hatred for.

China is an opponent for all democracies and most nations in it's region and outside of it. The go to move is to blame the US for everyone else's actions and attempt to fool people, that China is the better alternative to the US as a leader. It is not.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Instead of making diplomatic protests stop doing business with these thugs. Make a law that prevents unfriendly countries to buying real estate in japan, make the issuance of visas stricter.

If war broke out between China and Japan, would the US enter the war too to save Japan? If war broke out between China and the US, the major casualty would definitely be Japan because of the Sino-Japanese wars. What would be a reason for South Korea and Philippine to fight China? India would definitely stay neutral. Russia would supply China with missiles and nuclear weapons. It would be a tough decision for the US to make.

For power, influence, image and because their leader is an idiot that covets immortality through time by becoming such a hated figure he will stand beside Hitler, Mao, Stalin, Putin, Genghis Khan, Maximilien Robespierre and Nero. All amongst the cruelest people in history (except Putin who is still trying to get on that team).

@Toshihiro total non-sense this is not a China-US rivalry!! This is a China vs Japan problem you mentioned it yourself, "China is moving its ships closer" to Japan NOT the US!!! Also did you not read the article, which seems to be the on going spat over islands!! "Japan on Monday lodged a protest with China over the intrusion earlier in the day of two China Coast Guard ships into Japanese territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea. The uninhabited islets are controlled by Japan but claimed by China, which calls them the Diaoyu.

Expect this to become commonplace. It's the China-US rivalry, with Japan getting stuck in between. @Kaimycahl

Correction China is in Japan city limits because the senkaku are ishigaki city limits.

And don't blathering about "loose lips sink ships" or "need to know" because that only applies to military commanders and not you.

In actual fact the Japanese navy has much experience and could quite possibly be lethal if it wants to be .

Especially the submarines.

I do have some postcards dated 1905 of two Japanese battleships of that time. Yashima and Mikasa. They are extremely advanced ships for that time. What is also interesting is that the postcards were printed in The UK (then Great Britain). The date 1905 certainly seems to have a historical significance.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

The Chinese were happy to have the islands run by a private Japanese company until the late governor Ishihara used the Tokyo government to buy the islands. So now you have a mess when you already owned it.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

If war broke out between China and Japan, would the US enter the war too to save Japan?

If China initiated hostilities? Yes, without a doubt.

If war broke out between China and the US, the major casualty would definitely be Japan because of the Sino-Japanese wars.

US cities would also likely be partially destroyed in such a war. Much damage to Guam, Hawaii and the Aleutians too.

What would be a reason for South Korea and Philippine to fight China?

North Korean attack on South Korea leading to Chinese involvement. That one seems obvious. China shooting at Philippine Navy or Coast Guard ship trying to defend a Philippine island and/or fishing boats.

India would definitely stay neutral.

Maybe, maybe not.

Russia would supply China with missiles and nuclear weapons.

Laughable. Russia doesn't have the production capacity to make a difference and by and large their equipment is technically much inferior to what China builds. China has plenty of nuclear weapons and appears to be on the cusp of adding many hundreds of new ICBMs to silos at three sites in the deserts of western China. Also, would Russia want to sacrifice her nuclear deterrent when her conventional arms are so inferior? Probably not. It's about the only credible threat the Russians have left.

It would be a tough decision for the US to make.

Not with a treaty binding the US to defend Japan. You have no idea what US capabilities are and how the US would fight such a war. All I can say is that a war with China won't look like any war you have seen before.

WWII has been over for 77 years and I'm pretty sure you mean something very different, but reading your comment about the JSDF having "historical experience studied in naval colleges" sounds pretty much like a recently graduating Todai student trying to appeal his "(textbook) experience" at his ever first interview with a company...In a school, you study "cases", "history", "patterns", "theory", "(historical / theoretical) strategy", etc, etc but "experience" you only gain on the actual field in a real life situation...

I have been on the warships of many nations including the USN, RN, Germany, Sweden, Mexico ( ! ), Canada, Japan and have seen the PLAN up close and personal too. You can very much see the lessons of WWII on and especially inside Japanese warships. They feature heavy water tight compartmentation, absolutely no flammable materials inside unlike European warships that have lavish paneling, false overheads with flush lighting, carpets in wardrooms, etc. All of those fancy features one finds on European warships make them a fire hazard. Carpets can clog dewatering pumps, false overheads have to chopped away with fire axes to get at fires and broken pipes. You never see this on a Japanese ship. Instead you see passageways lined with firefighting gear, breathing apparatus, low light cameras, heavy timbers for shoring bulkheads, wooden plugs for plugging leaks, de-watering pumps, saws, axes, battery powered battle lanterns, etc. You see much less of this on European warships and almost none on a Chinese warship. This very much reflects the hard lessons of WWII. Only US Navy ships in my experience have similar levels of damage control and fire fighting equipment on board. The Chinese aircraft carriers, based on TV news footage of Liaoning's visit to Hong Kong, have smart card activated security locks on doors leading to many spaces insideher. That sounds great until the power goes out and you have shipmates behind one of those security doors and the space is burning or flooding. Now you have to spend time chopping down the door to get it open so you can fight the fire, control flooding or save your shipmates. Russian ships are not much better in this regard. A couple of Moskva's sisters visited San Diego and Norfolk in 1989 and something all us Navy types notices was the lack of any damage control equipment one finds in the US and Japanese fleets. USS Stark was hit by two Exocet missiles, fought the fires and returned to the US under her own power. Two missiles sent a Russian cruiser to the bottom with raging out of control fires. Stark's skipper ordered their missile magazine flooded with seawater as temperatures rose to prevent a fire or explosion. The Russians abandoned their ship as fires raged out of control. Having seen one of these in 1989 it was predictable. Russia didn't have big fleet engagements in WWII like Japan had and their ships reflect this fact.

Japan vigilant against Chinese navy activity involving aircraft carrier"

EVERYBODY PANIC!!! There are a couple of 'ancient' Chinese ships (see: Attilathehungry above) somewhere in the Pacific Ocean doing things...OH NO!!!

Abe234: You might be interested in learning a bit about the Nihon Constitution, specifically Article 9. This is the part that "Abe" despises and his American handlers now rue their insisting on its inclusion...But keeps Nihon young people 'safe', so far, from being used as bullet sponge stand-ins for Americans...

In reference to many of the comments here relating to "experience": Winston S. Churchill quote: "Generals are always prepared to fight the last war." So, too, today. The only part aircraft carriers will play in the next war are their own almost immediate decimation.

Reading the details regarding the "Lusitania" will reveal to one the lengths that Britain was willing to go to suck an unwilling U.S. into their war with Germany. And, as for "Pearl Harbor", the highly corrupt Roosevelt 'declared war' on 26July1941 when he unilaterally embargoed oil imports into Japan and then lied about a 'surprise attack' on Pearl Harbor. The 'attack' began at ~0755 Hawaii tine (!1355 U.S. east coast time). The U.S. had already fired the first shot having fired upon and sunk a Japanese miniature submarine in international waters at 0530 Hawaii time (see: USS Ward). The Japanese Ambassador had arrived at the White House at 0900 EST to deliver a declaration of war and the WH, knowing already what would happen, was kept waiting until 1500 and the PH attack had been confirmed. Again, MUCH is hidden in the details but 'surprise' is the biggest LIE of all. The "Infamy" of that Day was completely Roosevelt's so that he could claim 'deceit' on the part of the Japanese when, in fact, most of the unwarned American casualties of that day were of HIS doing. There is, in fact, no end of evidence confirming the LIE that, somehow, still lives today in the heads of the naïve.

Seems China has begun naval exercises actively and assertively. Last week, a Chinese research ship passed through the strait between Yakushima and the northernmost island of Kuchinoshima of the Tokara group probably surveying the seabed for their submarines.

And this time. A flotilla of war ships headed by the aircraft carrier Liaoning sailed through the strait between Yaeyma and Miyako islands.

Can this be the reason for why U.S. bases in Okinawa must be fortified? In particular, the Henoko new base, a so-called replacement for MC Air Station Futenma, must be built by all means? To me, this new base seems a white elephant for a Marine expeditionary force to deal with the volatile situation involving China's naval activities.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The question is if the Peoples' Republic of China can beat the Republic of China in an amphibious attack? There is a question if they can manage a 160km to travel to Taiwan. The landing craft will be under constant attack from missiles. Their air force as well will be subject to attack. Can the PRC pull off sigh an attack? It would be better to look north for their fuel. Siberia with it's vast amount of fuels.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The landing craft will be under constant attack from missiles.

Assuming the thousands of naval mines aircraft will lay down the straits don't sink them first. The latest naval mines have JDAM style guidance kits, fold out wing kits and can be launched from aircraft a long distance away from where the mine will hit the water surface.

Can China’s assertiveness in the East China Sea be the reason why U.S. bases in Okinawa must be fortified and strengthened? In particular, is it a must for the Henoko new base, a so-called replacement for USMC Air Station Futenma, to be built by all means?

Is the Henoko relocation the only solution for the Futenma issue? To me, this new base seems a white elephant or a junk for a Marine expeditionary force to deal with the volatile situation in the East China Sea involving China's naval activities.

The reasons why I think so are three-fold:

One: the most active elements of the Okinawa-deployed Marines are to relocate to Guam, that is being made the hub of the U.S. military in the western Pacific.

Two: Tokyo and Washington have recently agreed that primary responsibility to defend outlying islands rests with JSDF, not USFJ, so that Japan, in compliance with this bilateral agreement, has built missile bases on major islands in the archipelago west of Kyushu. At the same time, JSDF has installed their own Marines that often engage in joint amphibious military exercises with U.S. Marines. Maybe, the U.S. Marines are imparting their knowhow of amphibious warfare to JSDF.

Three: military technology seems to be advancing so fast that there is no room for the Marines to be engaged in conventional warfare.   The reason why the Russian forces in Ukraine have trouble advancing to hinterland may be because of this.

When the Imperial Japanese Navy was created in the 1800s they chose to learn from the most powerful navy at the time, the British Royal Navy. The J/S Mikasa was built in the Vickers yard in Barrow-in-Furness and launched in 1900. The vessel played a major role in the Battle of Tsushima where the Japanese Navy decimated the Russian Baltic Fleet. I visited the Mikasa ship museum at Yokusuka 7 years ago, just a short throw from US Navy Fleet Operations and JMSDF. 1905 is very signficant as that;s when Japan emerged victorious in the Russo-Japanese War, during which time the UK refused to let the Russian fleet refuel (coal) at any of the ports it controlled on their way from the Baltic Sea to Japan, and had British Army officers advising and observing the Japanese Army actions against the Russians in China.

Always remember, Chinese did not start ww2.

Always remember, Americans fought to defend China in China, and died doing so.

Americans fought and died to defend the Republic of China (now Taiwan) from Imperial Japan. Mao Tse Tung's CCP hordes fought the ROC and chased them off the mainland to Taiwan. Just 3 years later, the PRC under Mao sent 200,000 troops to help North Korea, killing US troops and those of 20 other UN nations. 40,000 Americans died and 100,000 were wounded in the Korean War.

The 2006 Road Map for U.S. Forces Realignment in Japan said, besides the Futenma relocation and other issues, that about 8,000 III MEF personnel and about 9,000 dependents would relocate to Guam. The cost for the relocation was to be borne partly by Japanese taxpayers in the amount of 1.5 trillion yen. I think Japan has already paid the money.

Since 16 years have passed since 2006, I also think the construction of the infrastructure in Guam for the relocated military personnel and their dependents has been completed. But I wonder if the relocation has started or actually been carried out.

Thank you OssanAmerica for the info. I would like to visit the Mikasa Museum myself someday.
